Suggestion for Drought Tolerant Flowering Ground Cover
Comments (7)Helianthemums - yellow, white, orange, pink and red available. Several low growing hardy geranium species. Aubretia, Iberis sempervirens, Aurinium saxatile, Saponaria ocymoides, Anthemis punctata subsp. cupaniana, Anthemis tinctoria, Dianthus, Festuca glauca (a grass), dwarf bearded iris - all classic tough full sun low growers. Tough hardy herbs like the various thymes, Oregano and different coloured Salvia officinalis. Lavender. BTW - Lysimachia nummularis needs moisture. It's a bog plant in its natural habitat. To start you off this season you could scatter Nasturtium, Limnanthes, Eschscholzia and other sun loving annual seed until your perennials fill out....See MoreGround Cover(s) for Heat and Shade
Comments (9)The advice you received was correct, despite the claims made by grass seed companies and their "shade mix" products: Grasses are definitely not going to do well with that little sun exposure. Mazus, Ajuga, and Green-and-Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum) come to mind as alternatives, but there are more options. Moisture will be the biggest concern as many shade groundcovers really cannot thrive if they are dry. There are some though, like barrenwort, that will do fine dry. Also, you need to specify how high you want the groundcover to be -- plants up to 1 ft. high are often considered groundcovers, but some people really prefer something that is only a few inches high. Personally, I really like U.S. native viola walteri var. 'Silver Gem' as a shade groundcover. Uploaded with ImageShack.us Click the link below, fill in your information about exposure, etc. and you will get some more choices. The conditions you list seem to leave you with many good possibilities. Good luck! Comments (6)From another site "Q: I have creeping Jenny in my azala, rose and hydranga beds. It seems to suffocate the roses. Do I need to worry about it suffocating any other plants? A: Creeping Jenny has one of the most extensive root systems on Earth and will smother everything near it. IÂd do something to get it out of your landscape beds if they are of value to you, even if it means hiring a landscape maintenance company to come in and do the work." The vinca and the sweet woodruff both are easily controlled where I live. My vinca grows in a 1 1/2 foot swatch along both sides of my front walk way, I trim a little out every year in the spring, and snip occasional trailer off over the summer. The Sweet Woodruff has such shallow roots that it can easily be pulled by hand....See MoreShrubs/ground cover for shade/partial shade slope
Comments (2)I've been really happy with Sarcococcas humilus on a site similar to description. A bit slow to spread to total coverage, but a nice low evergreen that has good weed blocking coverage. Another for such a site though not evergreen is Epimedium XFrohenleiten. Lovely dense leaf coverage about 8-10 inch and golden flowers in spring. Seems to like 4-5 hours morning sun but an also stand medium shade all day, and forms a dense root mass that holds back vitrually ever weed around here except garlic grass(Allium Sp,?)....See MoreCarol love_the_yard (Zone 9A Jacksonville, FL)
