thanks, susan aka nova, for hosting a very successful plant trade. i came there with fifty plants, fully intending to come back empty handed. instead, as you know, the cooper had plants stuck in every conceivable corner, stacked high! you have a lovely garden in a wonderful area... and i am going to give dave a ring sometime and go bass fishing with him -- sounds like a perfect day: fishing, garden chatting, and a stop at the blueberry farm up the road. (gardencpa and i picked 5 lbs of blueberries 'tween the two of us!)

first-rate hospitality... beautiful roses. delish food.

Ditto. It was wonderful. You're yard is amazing after living there only two years. And the bottle path was even better in person than in its pictures. It was great to see everybody and get some new plants and give some away too. Thanks so much!

Echoing ill-man, thank you so very much, Susan/Nova!!! What a delight to see what you and your husband have done in a few short years, and what a gracious hostess/host you are. My very first swap, but by no means my last. Absolutely wonderful to meet so many gardening/animal enthusiasts, and to come home with so many new "babies."

Ill-man, are you perchance a salesman in "real life"? LOL! I can't wait to begin harvesting some of that ... what the heck is it again? The vegetable that you gave me cuttings of and I tasted? NEXT TIME I'll bring a notebook and take notes. I went into overload on information!

Marcia, knowledge goddess, you're everything I knew you would be, and then some. By now you are home with not only new "baby" plants, but your new "baby" doggie! Congratulations again!

Solstice, wow! Sylvia, Felix, everyone, wow! I can't begin to remember everyone's names, please forgive... but you are all indelibly etched into a very memorable experience.

More, more, more! I can see I'm going to have to construct some sort of greenhouse at my new abode, as I've been bitten by the gardening bug, big time.

Glad the biscotti was enjoyed by many! Here's the recipe if anybody else is interested-it's pretty fast to whip up: Trail Mix Biscotti (base recipe) preheat oven to 350 1 cube soft unsalted butter 3/4 C. granulated sugar 2 med eggs beaten 2 tsp. real vanilla extract 1 rounded teaspoon grated lemon zest ( 1 lemon's worth or more) 2 1/2 C. all-purpose unbleached flour ( unsifted) 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 to 3/4 C. dried fruit and nut trail mix **chopped raw pistachios and dried cranberries can be substituted -any other chopped dried fruit and nuts can be used as well In mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until real fluffy . Add prebeaten eggs , vanilla, and lemon zest. Beat until very creamy looking again . In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt ( using a mesh strainer, sift all together a few times to evenly distribute baking powder). Add creamed mix to flour mixture and blend gently until flour is absorbed. Mix in fruit and nut mixture gently. Dough should be firm. Divide dough in half. Place on a greased and floured baking sheet and form into 2 logs about 1/2 inch high, 4 inches wide and 9 inches long, spacing them at least 2 inches apart. Bake 20- 25 minutes, or till golden brown. (check sooner they bake fast) Transfer from baking sheet to a rack. Let cool 5 minutes. Place logs on cutting board and, with a serrated knife, slice diagonally at a 45-degree angle into 1/2-inch thick slices. Lay slices flat(cut sides up) on the baking sheet and return to the oven for 10 minutes, turning over halfway through cooking, to dry slightly. Let cool on a rack. Store in a tightly covered container or freeze for longer storage. Makes about 1 1/2 dozen. depending on how you cut them) Enjoy! Some notes: The base recipe is open to alot of experiment. Different flavored extracts can be used as well as the fruit and nut combo Larger eggs result in a softer biscotti Parchement paper can be used instead of a greased and floured surface. Those airbake cookie sheets help prevent over browning on bottom

French Lace Cookies The cookies are easy to make but a bit attention demanding, read the instructions before you get started so you are familiar with the process. Heat over to 350 degrees and move rack to top of oven. Line 2 large cookie sheets with aluminum foil and have a flat tray covered with wax paper prepared to cool the cookies (a cooling rack will not work as well for these, I use another large cookie sheet) One batch makes approximately 3 dozen cookies. Mix - 1 stick (1/4 pound) unsalted butter at room temp 1 slightly generous cup of finely ground nuts (walnuts, blanched almonds, hazlenuts, or pecans - each gives a slightly different taste to the cookies - for the plant swap I used my home grown walnuts with a small amount of pecans) 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons milk 1 level tablespoon flour Chocolate chips (though you can use any flavor such as white chocolate, butterscotch or anything that appeals to you, though you can also leave the cookies plain) In a heavy pan, preferably a cast iron one, combine all the ingredients (I usually add the flour to the nuts in my food processor as I grind them up) except the chocolate chips over a medium low heat. Stir constantly until the mix becomes a thick paste, like cooked farina or oatmeal. Don't let the mix boil, just get thick. Turn the heat off. Using two teaspoons make rounded little balls of the mix and drop them onto the aluminum foil and flatten each ball slightly. Only bake one pan at a time, and only make 6 to 8 cookies at a time, spacing the cookies far apart, as they will spread. The first time you do this you might want to make a test batch with just 2 cookies to see how far they spread and how fast they cook. The cookies take about 6 or 7 minutes to cook. The biggest problem with these cookies is they burn very easily, so you can't have your attention distracted or do anything else whilst you make these. Once the first batch is in the oven get the second batch ready. After a couple of minutes baking, turn the cookie sheet in the oven so they cook evenly. If they are cooking too quickly (browning too much at the edges before the centers cook) turn the oven down to 325. Check the cookies every couple of minutes. Reverse the cookie sheet as you feel necessary. You want them to be lightly browned with bubbles over the entire surface of the cookie, don't let them get too brown. Remove the cookies from the oven and drop 3 chocolate chips on each cookie. Let the cookies sit in the pan and the chips melt. Start the next batch cooking. After a couple of minutes spread the chocolate gently over the top of the cookie using the back of a spoon. (don't forget to rotate the batch in the oven.) Move the cooked batch of cookies on their sheet of the foil onto a flat surface to cool completely and when they are cooled (this only takes a few minutes they cool quickly) carefully peel them off the aluminum foil and place them on the wax paper lined cookie sheet or tray. The cookies are very fragile so be careful. Place the tray with the cookies in the refrigerator to harden the chocolate. When you have a single layer of cookies finished and the chocolate has hardened, cover them with a layer of wax paper. Start the second layer on top of the first and continue to bake, spread chocolate and cool. Use a paper towel to smooth out the used aluminum foil and put it back on the cookie sheet to reuse. I usually have a third piece of aluminum foil in use so I have one batch in the over, one batch with chips melting/cooling and one batch being made into balls ready to go in the oven. I know these instructions sound complicated and too detailed, but hopefully they will save you the burnt cookie learning curve :o) -Rosalinda

Thank You, Micheal, as I blush furiously. I cannot believe you all had room for the blueberries on top of all the plants you took home. Give Dave a call anytime and he will be more than happy to take you fishing on the "pond" as he likes to fish and likes to fish with his friends even more.

Now, rather than start a new post, I will continue here with my thanks to everyone who attended. I had the best of times and loved seeing all my GW friends. And the plants! Everyone told me "I don't have anything to bring" but that was far from the truth. Car after car pulled up and soon all the tables I had put up were full. And everyone was so knowledgeable about the plants that they brought.

I was having such a good time I forgot to take alot of pictures but here is what I did take -

Everyone was sooooooo generous with plants and food but special thanks go out to Marcia for her personally painted water can, Langley for her birdbath, Kara [spelled your name right this time, I hope] for her sweet gift basket, Kate for the hanging basket, and Laura for the beautiful pot for my front porch. I like sharing plants and meeting new peeps!! WWW dropped me off and into the greenhouse I went. (I'm only inside cause my ipod battery died.) It was so cool to put faces to names. Thanks so much Susan and Dave!

wheh... just spent the last 45 minutes planting all the plants that i got... thanks, felix, for the very generous gift of cassava and sugar cane. i'm really excited! nicky -- thanks for the beans. they went into the garden, among my crowders. marcia -- the penstemon is in with the roses.

i wish i'd jotted down what i got from whom... i got some awfully cool stuff. thanks, everyone!

and, kara, you must get a blog and post all your cool plants and statuary.

Yeah, what everyone ELSE said, Susan!! Fantastic swap, and so much fun! Susan, you and Dave are terrific hosts, and I just love visiting your garden. Your black gamecock iris (I think that's right) make me want to order some right now. I was in the mood after seeing Olya's pictures, and now that I've seen them in person, wow!

It was really great to see old friends again and to meet new ones face to face for the first time. WWW, really nice to meet you, after all our emails back and forth! Your hypertufa bowl was just a fantastic surprise, and I'm thrilled to have it!! You are very talented, indeed!

Thank you to everyone who brought food, too. Everything was delicious, and Nicki, you outdid yourself with the nasturtium and cream cheese roll ups. SO good. Of course, I LOVE Kara for her yummy chocolate cake, in addition to loving her for just being her sweet self. Really, it was all great! (Melissa, the banana bread was the best ever!)

And Ill-Man...I simply cannot BELIEVE you have already planted everything!!! That's just crazy! I am barely in the house and you've done it all??? Aaaah, the energy of the YOUNG!! I'll be so happy to get half of mine done tomorrow. You are a Role Model, for sure. Thanks for the datura, and the other thingie that I forgot the name of...lies flat, has little flowers??? Oh, boy, getting OLD is a pain!

So many people to thank!

Thank you to Susan and Dave for another great swap! Can't say enough about how nice you both are, how beautiful your garden is and how comfortable you make everyone feel.

Thank you to everyone who shared plants with me! Although I won't remember the names of most of these plants, I am thrilled to have them and I will remember where I got them. It makes you all part of my garden.

Thank you to Felix and Sylvia for the garden tour at their home. The yard is pure delight with more trees, fruit and flowers than you can imagine! And delightful garden art too.

And Thank you to Marcia and Nicki for making the trip so much fun. This time we didn't get lost, didn't meet Cletus and his brothers and even managed to avoid getting sideswiped by a Villages resident in a large pink car. The day couldn't have been more perfect.

And finally, Thank you to Maks for the snuggles and kisses - and for letting me pet your velvet ears!

And the people - I even recognized a few. When I get to the farm, I'm going to throw a super plant swap, you just wait and see. And you're all invited! Not to worry, cora/corar and any other hypertufa/concrete artist wanna-be's... there are plans underway to conduct a basic "how to" class! I was amazed at the interest in learning about 'tufa, but shouldn't have been, because we gardeners are an adventurous lot, aren't we? I mean, if we've got a garden, don't we all want the garden ART to adorn it? (-:

And thank you all for the compliments on my work. It is the greatest joy to surprise people with gifts. Your reactions spur me on... I'll be out in the workroom making "mud pies" come daylight, that's for sure. And, when it gets too hot for that, I'll be inside making lists and plans for how to best conduct a class for ya'll to learn how much fun it is.

Some of my favorite pictures from yesterday! Thanks again to everyone who made it such a pleasant day. I can't tell you how nice it is to visit with a group of friends like this one, under the shady oaks in Susan's front yard. It's so peaceful there, and the cooling breeze kept us all comfortable. And the size of the group made it easy to visit with each person, too. BLISS!

Oh, Marcia, what a cutie-pie you have there! And I just know Potter will be a great big brother. And if you are the High Priestess of Procrastination then I must be one of the lower Priestesses. After putting up the leftovers from the swap [I don't think we will have to cook for a couple of days!] and went and got the signs, I collapsed for the evening. But I will be out today planting my goodies and reliving the swap one plant at a time!

Dear, dear Kate, I can NEVER forget that! And as one of the founding members of Marcia's Minions, YOU must never forget to walk ten paces behind me, and keep your head lower than mine at all times! (Easy enough, since I tower over you, but STILL. You get my drift!)

Maksim is having a wonderful day today, alternately playing with Potter (who seems to love him) and sleeping on Mark's lap. My plan to get a doggie who will love Mark as well as he loves me seems to be off to a good start. Later today, the collected weiners will go outside for another dance in the grass. Maks is getting brave enough to let me walk a few paces away before he races after to me to throw himself on my feet. And Potter is really doing well with him, though I have to watch that he doesn't roughhouse too much.

Susan, you can join me any day in making an art form of procrastination. Just keep in mind that I don't even have to have the excuse of a long hard day to exercise my god-given right to "put off until whenever that which I don't feel like messing with today!" Practice makes perfect. Try skipping the household chores for a week. You'll find it helps you achieve a level of procrastination ANYONE would be proud of!

I am itching to go to a swap but they all seem to conflict with something else.
Saturday was my daughters softball tournament (we won,yippe) and for my boys they all had their final soccer games and trophy ceremony.

It was a beautiful day...to get lost in the forest...twice! I made it home w/o getting lost.

OH! Marcia the puppy is sooo cute!

I made some great swaps but the only thing that I have "planted" are some tillandsias that I glued on a tree! I am going to use the excuse that most of what I got is too young to be planted in the ground or was newly transplanted so I have to wait until some roots are established.

I had a great time and I'm even remembering some names from last year.

The funny thing about a swap is that you need to be a good salesman or you'll go home with most of the things you brought. Sell me and I'll then want something that I never knew existed until 2 minutes ago! What a hoot.

I planted one, yes, only one plant in the ground today. Like Laura, I would say most are way too young to go in the ground. Great excuse! Plus I was gone all last weekend and the housework has to be done.

As ill-man said, we stopped and picked blueberries on the way back home. It was an interesting visit as I think the folks there had already been drinking for several hours. Very nice people though I ended up with two pounds of blueberries. Here is what we had for dessert tonight with vanilla ice cream. Between Kara's chocolate cake yesterday and blueberry cobbler and ice cream tonight, I am going to have to double my time at the YMCA for the next week.

gardencpa, we seem to have thought along the same lines... what AWESOME blueberries! as with most fruit, i eat them with a passion, but this passion is flavored by the knowledge that blueberries are really the ONLY north american fruit to have made it onto the world stage... so, i eat them patriotically.

i begged like a child for my wife to make this pie...

Now that is one pretty pie. I bet it was delish. We had a teenage boy at our house this evening (seems to happen more often these days) to help us out with eating up the cobbler but still have some leftovers. I'm sure it will make a breakfast of champions!

Hmmmm...that would have been fun, Kate. I can see us now, me walking along, stroking Maks and pointing out the ripest, juiciest berries for you, my loyal minion, to pick. And then, back home, and me giving you the spoons and bowls, then waiting while you bake us a yummy pie. Ummmmm!!! Er...you DO bake, don't you, Minion????

My leg is sore! From kicking myself for not coming up! oh if it had just been this weekend....Wwwwwaaaaaa!

Susan I did SO enjoy your swap last year and there are new peeps to meet.. I thought about y'all all day! And see you had a delightful swap (you are so organized!) I love all the pics thanks for sharing, I can just smell those warm blueberries! And Maks is toooo cute, looks like potter is being good with him.

I just checked out the Official Job Description Manual listing for "Minions, Assorted & Various," and the Picking Blueberries portion is optional, Kate. So...I guess if it is going to cause dissention in the ranks, Marcia's Minions no longer have to pick blueberries. Seeeeeee...I'm a kind and generous SpiritGuide/ProcrastinationPriestess/Queenie! I can be MOST benevolent when I need to be. Therefore, no need to turn in your Minion Membership just yet. I rather enjoying having minioning going on whilst on road trips with you and Nicki. Makes me feel Queenly an' all!

I had a fantastic time at the swap. Once I got home I was too tired to start planting right away and after I took a little nap I was too busy showing all my new plants and the yard art I got from WWW to my mom. I did get a few planted on sunday but most of the plants are still sitting in their pots under my oak tree.

OMG...every time I look at that picture, I nearly fall off my chair laughing!! Susan, if Kate doesn't reconsider, there may be a position opening up with Marcia's Minions...maybe you would like to join?

Now, I need to go see what other chores around here I can put off until another day. Must keep my reputation spotless, you know. (Unlike my house and garden, of course!)
