Best oldies/Best Newbies to Hybridize with

Whilst searching for an old post, I came upon an even older post on the best new flowers to hybridize with. Since many people have just started dabbling in the art (seems like mayne people have thier new babies blooming this year) I thought it's be nice to make a list of some great daylilies to breed with.

Since I've just started this year, I'll share what I've bought/will be getting to use specifically for crossing.

RIBBONETTE will cross with Fizziwg

JULIA'S CHOICE got this year

HEAVEN ALL DAY got this year

I know that people are starting to get into the sculpted look. I'm not sure if I like it yet! I did see Golden Hibiscus in person and I did like that one, though. I think many still want monster teeth and others want mega ruffles. I WANT stripes, Diamond Dusting, and Eyes! I also want something that will grow and bloom like crazy in crappy soil in Wisconson for my mom. She has the worst soil and loves daylilies. They take FOREVER to grow for her. Poor thing. :o(

Hi Dani,

I don't use any oldies to hybridize with. The oldest are from 1999-2000. They are Belle Cook, Victorian Lace, J.T. Davis and Fairest of Them. I may also use Taos this year but it depends on what is blooming at the same time. Of these five, all but J.T. Davis have scapes.

I have several newer northern introductions that I am looking forward to using. These are Gentelman's Lady, Belle of Ashwood, Elusive Happiness, No More Tears, and Perfect Pink Porcelain.

I also have some that would make great parents but I haven't figured out what to do with them yet. These are Tower of Babel, Enduring Freedom, Mary's Baby, Moonlight Sail, and Joan Derifield.

I usually buy crossed daylily seeds from the lily auction.
This is my second year dabbing.
I pollinated with the following pollen this year.
Ed Brown,Early snow,Spacecoast easy rider,spacecoast pink girl,pearl harbor,malaysian monarch,inherited wealth,
absolute treasure,pink super spider,fires of fuji,stellar double rose,destined to see.spacecoast bold scheme to name a few.
I like spiders,doubles,eyes,edges,ruffles.
I purchased a variety of daylilies to use for pollinating next year.A few tetraploid spiders also.
You never know what surprises you will get from crossing.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone! I will keep doing my research! Robert, you nailed it -- I think I'm partial to the antique roses, or at least those that mimic the lovely prolific blooms and fragrance. I'm lucky in that my hedge can grow pretty much as tall and wide as it needs to be... it will cut into my current garden space the deeper it goes (although nothing is planted in front at the moment), so started considering ramblers/climbers to go for more of a "spill" than a formal hedge; the wire fence could definitely act as a support, and it's in full sun. I'm hoping for a cottage look... I'm starting my teas garden elsewhere, as I do love them, too, but I'm yearning for the big, wild, mass o' roses look... Connie, I was debating that thought! Cecile Brunner was entrancing me the other night. I'm new to this particular forum set-up, so I'll have to read all the Antique Rose pages; a meetup sounds lovely. (I'm dying to investigate rose gardens around here!) Ann, thank you for the info... I definitely want to do my research before doing any major planting! There's some learning from experience in everything, I'm sure, but after home renovations, I'd like to avoid as much heartbreak and wasted effort as possible. ;) There's something to be said for feasible dreams... I have lilac and azaleas growing nearby; I could definitely inter-plant with more lilac or other shrubs; I definitely seem to like shrubs and bushes in general. I will read that ebook first thing tomorrow. Kad, your Sophie is gorgeous! I was worried because the Austin rep made it sound like they might all die miserably in the humidity... scared me, but I'm determined to find a few Austin roses to plant. Congratulations on having the house in order! I almost want to throw myself a party on finally fully unpacking the last boxes here. ;) I've been waiting for decades to be able to properly let myself fall under the spell; there's no escaping it! Oh and yes... no freezing to -25F here in Virginia. That's what I get for trying to post after staring, glossy-eyed, at rose websites until the wee hours. ;)

Hi alina, I grew celebrity in New Jersey years ago and was also disappointed in the taste. Bought some a couple of years ago on sale at the Cox farm stand in Vienna and they were wonderful--our best variety of that year. Could have been mislabeled, I guess. We bought a celebrity last year but my husband (he has taken over the vegetable garden) lost track of what was what. They were all good, as I remember. We usually buy a mixture on the theory that different varieties will do better in different weather conditions. This year Bryan has invested heavily in German Johnsons though. His whole family swears by this heirloom variety. We'll see how it does in Va. I always make sure we have at least one early girl. Great tomato! One year I had one that turned out to be indeterminate. The tomatoes were classic early girls but they ripened early and the plant kept on producing without let up all summer. One of the regrets of my life is that I did not try to propagate that tomato--I was just too busy! Oh well... If you buy large nursery grown tomatoes you are supposed to strip off some of the lower leaves and bury a portion of the stem to achieve better balance between roots and top growth. You can sort of lay them sideways if necessary.

I can say with great certitude that the "3Rs" ~ Round, Red and Reliable are in practically every SASE request I've handled. Popularity of any one variety is always influenced by online discussion, currently Marglobe, Heinz 1437, Homestead, and Phenomenal are big faves with Bonny Best, Fabulous, Super Sioux, Celebrity and Heatwave requested a little less frequently. I've got only five packs of Fabulous left so they'll likely be gone my Tuesday if not tomorrow. (God bless the good folks who donate their tomatoes because they keep the supply line going strong!) It's been a busy month with nearly three thousand packs already gone and there's still another week to go. This weekend exhausted at least ten types from the list but I put in another dozen--most of them are 3Rs which are the backbone of the list; they are the usual introduction to growing tomatoes in the home garden for any beginner and they are among the beloved favorites of the most experienced tomato aficionados. Everybody wants some and everybody loves some. Sometimes it's heritage or sometimes it's family history that influences selections, but oftentimes it's reliability. I'm doing a donation to a food bank in the deep south next month; their clients need reliability so disease resistance is a huge factor in selection--these people do not have the money to purchase "curatives". I'll review Tuskegee's documentation which will guide me in selections; I think it's gonna be mostly 3Rs. Bottom line is that the economy tanked, for most people reliability means less expense. Celebrity, Big Boy, Early Girl, Big Beef, etc are going to maintain if not increase their popularity.

I have used April LaQuinta and Gary Colby the most this year as pollen parent.

April LaQuinta is such a stunner, I have used it on almost all the daylilies in the yard. Then I noticed that a lot of Petit gardens' intros have Gary Colby as one of the parents. Thus, I started using Gary Colby, especially on big blooms and saturated colors. I love to obtain big sized nice flowers :)

Also, I am most interested to see what happens when an older daylily that I like is crossed with a newer daylily, for example, Always Afternoon x Wonder of It All. Part of the fun for me is letting the imagination 'what if' go for it.

Always Afternoon is an amazing pod parent, taking in pollen from the new ones that I find difficult.

Pod parents that have been very good include Tennessee Afterglow, Great White, Space Coast DLs, Larry Grace, JT Davis and Judy Farquhar.

Spiders have been difficult for me to pollinate. I am hoping that one remaining viable cross will reach maturity: Web Browser x April LaQuinta. Otherwise, it is to the LA I go for some Spider seed crosses.

Future dream plants include Priscilla's Smile, Priceless, Featuring the Gold, Elvis, Bridey Greason, Bluegrass Music and GSTQ.

I would also like to add teeth, but will need to wait awhile for some of my wish list plants like Bass Gibson, Venus Flytrap, Reap the Whirlwind, Outer Limits, Angelique Fringes come down a bit (come down a lot more).
