Fragrant Plants

any recommendation on night blooming fragrant plant?

Hi,

Can someone please recommend very fragrant plant that blooms at night? Preferably, something that blooms a lot during summer nights.

I have 4-5 yr. old night blooming Jasmine in ground (N. Cali.-Z9), but it for some reason blooms only once a year (August). I am not sure why it does not bloom more often. It does not get >3-4 hours sun. Anyway, that's probably a separate question I will post sometime on forum.

butterfly ginger- I know it is more of a day fragrance, but they are really fragrant at night too.

Brugmansias or Angel's Trumpet is a good plant for night time scent. And the good thing is that it can be easily propagated.

Jeanne, dunno how old the plant was last summer, but it had 6 mature leaves, the largest 8"x4," and 2 keikis. The original spike had branched twice. Checking back, the complete blooming - 5 flowers - lasted 3 months. It was probably cut short by taking the plant to the State Fair exhibit, where it was hot. Several other Phals bloomed for 5+ months - it's all relative. :) C, this is not a small plant. It's one of those "dinner plate" shapes, with the leaves growing in a fan. Right now, it's 12"x14." Sooner or later, this one will be replaced w/ a bellina hybrid or species that stays small, as long as it smells like plumeria. WC8

I can't barely smell phlox. I can't smell phlox at ALL. Period. And nobody tell me about zinc. I can smell everything except phlox. There isn't another of the flowers (or spices, or anything) I cannot smell if they have a smell. I also cannot taste BitrexTM. There are a few percent who cannot. I'm disappointed. It's supposed to be so murderously brutally bitter, and I can't find out. And yes, I can taste other bitter things. Dandelions, yuk, methylsulfonylmethane ugh; Tylenol, arggh, etc. Bitter soda water, nicely bitter. Swedish bitters, yup (but no thanks). Etc. I discovered about phlox some 20 years ago. My sister said, 'Ohhh... PHLOX!! I LOVE the smell of phlox". And she goes and bunches a bunch together and sticks her face in it. "Mmmmm!!" I try it and I'm like Dang! she's playing me. The stuff has no smell and she's pulling my leg...

Some peonies have great fragrance..usually the older doubles and semi-double types, especially pinks and whites..it really varies from variety to variety. I don't have tons of peonies, but 'Leto' and 'Noemie Demay' are probably the most fragrant that I have right now. My J.P. Connell rose seems to be quite fragrant and blooms all summer (still blooming well right now). I can always smell it when I am weeding! I have a double pink Scots rose that is very fragrant. There are loads of old roses, such as alba's and gallica's and others that are often quite fragrant, though they are more tender. I have a couple alba's that have done well. Bee balm is quite fragrant, in a herb-y kind of way, but that is the foliage I think, not the flowers. I have a LA hybrid lily that is quite fragrant, but it wasn't a named variety when I bought it from a bulb sale, so I don't know the name and don't know if it is available commercially. It is a salmon-orange colour. And of course various lilac's! I have a number of different ones in our yard. My double flowering plum seems to be quite fragrant. I used to have a very fragrant phlox, called 'Blue Paradise' that had a heavenly scent! (I thought so, anyway!) I would definitely buy it again. It was hardy, but it kind of got crowded out by some more monstrous plants and slowly died away.

For osmanthus, Fudingzhu is the main variety that blooms intermittently throughout the year. It is not perfect, as in you won't have flowers constantly. There are probably other varieties that have better blooming, but it's a matter of finding them for sale (probably exists in China but impossible to get). Michelia alba will bloom almost constantly in tropical conditions. I would get two or more if possible because one plant may be in bloom and another one next to it might be "re-energizing" for the next flush of blooms. Michelia champaca in my climate blooms for a few months out of the year (California). If you can get ahold of the other yellow/orange michelia hybrids from Thailand you may see better, extended blooming. You may also want to check out Tahitian gardenia (can bloom year-round).

Rondelettia splendens -- Panama Rose

Only fragrant after 10pm, intoxicating, haunting fragrance, blooms all summer, large plants are almost everblooming.

The catch? Not everyone can smell this one; try it if you can find it!

You can also try brunfelsia jamaica and lactea, hoya lacunosa and pubicalyx, brassavola nodosa (an easy to grow orchid)

Many books on fragrant plants have sections on night fragrance, hit the library or bookstore for more research.

datura inoxia had got to be one of the most fragrant night blooming plant I have ever had - it would just fill the whole yard with its scent, flowers are huge and the hummingbird moth just loves it. It is closely related to jimpson weed which discourages some people but my what a lovely plant.This is the one in our yard and one night it had 83 blooms on it - around 40-50 was the norm. It will self seed and is perennial for me so it should be for you also.

Datura is definitely the winner in my yard as well. I got my first blooms last weekend and it will bloom every night until first freeze. Completely fills my backyard with its awesome fragrance! If I could only grow one plant in my yard, this would be it.

On either side of my driveway where it enters the carport, I have beds of petunias and nicotiana. Petunias are sweetly scented, nicotiana is spicy. They're a treat, at night. They've been bloming now for a month and show no signs of letting up. Easy from seed, or you can buy little trays of plants.

Gardenias are blooming now. They're fragrant day and night.
