Doesn't the fruit of moon and stars get up to as large as 50 lbs? I can't imagine how you could support it grown vertically.

I grew Moon and Starts for the first time last summer. It does crawl all over the place and makes mowing difficult. My vine got stunted and made one smaller size watermelon. I was worried it was ruined, but when I cut it open it was perfectly ripe and sweet. Yum. This year I am trellising my melons, but some are still growing on the ground. You can trellis some of the vine and let some on the ground if you want. I have my doubts that my melons can ever get really large in my yard.

since i have no experience im just looking for ideas, advice and suggestions.

thanks amberroses, i will keep that in mind when i transplant so that its an area that sunny but not gonna pose an issue for lawn mowing.

did you have problems with pests?

Oh yeah I had problems with pests last year. Cucumber worms ate a hole in the rind, but only caused cosmetic damage. They destroyed the squash and cucumbers though. There was also a lot of aphids. I started the seeds in July last year. This year I started my seeds in February and I've only had a minimal problem with stink bug larva and no other pest problems.
