Nice Find at a Local Nursery!

Happened to be in the vicinity of one of the chain nursery outlets recently and decided to check their stock for any unusual plants.

Found that they were stocking some nice Helleborus cultivars, that I haven't seen in my area before:

Helleborus x ballardiae 'Pink Frost'

Helleborus x nigercors 'Green Heron'

Helleborus x hybridus - Mardi Gras Strain from Seattle breeder, Charles Price (4 color shades available)

Hopefully this is just a sample of what they will be offering in the future!

Heretofore, if you wanted any of the latest hybrids and cultivars, you had to order them on-line and pay a princely price for a 3Â½-4" pot and then mortgage the farm to pay shipping & handling. Some places even charge $5 for the shipping carton and an order processing fee of $10-$15, in addition to the shipping charges! At one west coast nursery I recently checked, 2 Helleborus, in 4" pots, cost $50 ($25 ea.) and minimum shipping charges to the East coast was $39. A deal Killer!

In addition to the Helleborus, I found Daphne odora (pink or white blooms) (1 and 3 gal.) and a rare find, flowering Edgeworthia chrysantha in 3 gal. containers.

They also had some nice Camellias, in bloom. But didn't find any that I don't have.

Fortunately, a number of the above mentioned plants followed me home! As soon as the temperatures warm a bit and wind calms down, maybe today, Sat & Sun, I will have them planted, in time for showers on Monday.

Yes, the one on LaVista, behind Toco Hill SC. Was kinda surprised to find one inside the Perimeter, but the Mgr said there were two others in the N. Atlanta area, one near Lindbergh & on Roswell Rd. If you live in the N Metro suburbs & exburbs, you probably have a number to choose from! The one's near Snellville & Conyers are closed.

If you find any additional Helleborus varieties at one near you, please let me know! I am an avid collector of those winter blooming beauties.
I'm considering an email to their CA HQ, suggesting that they may want to consider expanding their offering of Hs in their SE outlets. Especially, some of the Heuger Gold Collection (HGC) H. niger's, developed in Germany. H. niger isn't usually found here, because all of the "experts" agree that they won't survive in the South. I and some friends heartily disagree and have grown them for more than 20 years, without any problems!

Susan, Yes, I sure agree with you about the Swamp Milkweed having a growth spurge. I had the same experience when I took them out of the smaller pots that they were in and planted them in the big pots. I had done that a few weeks ago and mine are much taller too. I just measure my tallest one and it's about 32" high. The other ones in the bigger pots are catching up to it. I remember when I bought some Swamp Milkweed at the local nursery last year and the year before, they were just in the one-gallon pots and I remember thinking that a person would never be able to keep them in those permanently, that they'd be falling over all the time. The plants get 4 feet high and that's pretty tall to be in a pot that size, but I can imagine that the nursery would have to jack the price up another few dollars if they'd put them in bigger pots. I suppose I spent a few dollars on the potting soil to put in each of those two and three gallon pots. I got a bag of potting soil while I was there yesterday. It cost about $10 and if it wouldn't have been for mixing garden soil in with it, I'm sure I would have only gotten about 4 plants/pots done with that amount. So that would be about $2.50 a plant just in potting soil. I hate to even think what I've spent on plants, seeds, potting soil, and peat moss this year. Oh my! My husband said it's time to stop, that it's breaking the piggy back, and he means it, so any others will just have to get planted over in the weed patch, which is okay. I already have plenty already. Sherry, Yes, I think too that there are some really nice people out there, and that was nice of the nursery manager giving you the Buddleia and other plants. I don't think that too many would do that actually. Haha, yeah I'm sure you would know that feeling with the Monarchs! Hee hee. Wow, I bet too that you'd have had to gather a lot of leaves for all those cats for just being gone overnight. I've been saying that raising cats is about as much work as taking care of a couple of real babies. I know when I had the Monarchs here last year, I only got 4-5 hours of sleep a night because I'd wake up worrying if they had enough food and lots of times a few would be out of leaves even though I thought I had given them plenty before I hit the sack. I guess I should have stuffed the jars full. lol I'm going to forget the jars this year except for maybe a few. That just takes too much time keeping each caterpillar in a quart jar and dumping the frass out each time I feed it...taking the caterpillar and stick out, dumping, putting the cat and stick back in with fresh leaves. Geez, I thought there HAS to be an easier way of doing this! I sure hope I get that cage done or I might end up doing it the hard way again, and I was exhausted. I'm glad things aren't so hectic for you right now, but just think of all those butterflies you're putting out into the world! :-) Cathy

I found some the other day in the garden center at WalMart while I was strolling through there. It is about three weeks early for this area, but they don't care if a late frost comes in and kills all their plants, I swear they don't. They had pink Heather blooming too. I was surely tempted - $3 a gallon pot. But, it looks best planted in mass...and no mun$$$...no mass. I will not be buying any bedding plants until after April 15th, if at all this year. Too risky this early. But it sure was pretty to look at all their plants! (Poor plants.) ~Annie

I was tempted to go in my lunch hour last week but thought that would be pushing it from Decatur! So we managed to get there today. It was our first visit and its a wonderful place, so sad that they are closing. My kids played in their sandbox with my husband while I looked around, what a treat! I bought a Ceanothus, thanks to David and Esh mentioning it (there is still one left!), Physocarpus Summer Wine, Caryopteris Bluebeard, Amelanchier Autumn Brilliance, Edgeworthia (paper bush), Kolkwitzia Dream Catcher, Rhamnus (buckthorn) Fine Line, and two Amsonia Hubrechtii, which I had been looking for all over town and was delighted to find. I agree, a wonderful selection, and very knowledgeable and friendly owners, such a shame they have to close. They still have a lot left -- tons of perennials, which I didn't have time to look at all of, but there were rows and rows of them, and lots of shrubs, including one more ceanothus! Thanks to Fay, my plants are all sitting outside having a good shower.

Here's some farms/garden centers I know of, including links to their websites: Johnson's Roadside Farm in Swansea has a simple farmstand operation that I frequent. The prices here are unbeatable. The vast majority of produce they sell is grown on their farms, however some organic fruits, like California peaches, are imported (I'm guessing because they don't grow well in MA?). I choose not to buy fruits that they don't grow themselves, anyway... you can taste the difference. What else I like about Johnson's is that they sell products from a LARGE number of small, local businesses from the Providence/Fall River metro area (Landry's, Willow Tree and Star just to name a few). There is also a greenhouse that they share property with--I'm not sure if it's owned by the same people, but you can purchase annuals here (buyer beware). A 4-pack of tomatoes I bought from there all succumbed to bacterial spot on exactly the same day. Weird mojo from that greenhouse; I called them to ask if they were having bacterial spot issues with other customers or plants at their greenhouse, and the woman on the phone completely disregarded the issue and told me my plants were probably being under-fertilized. The tomatoes are dead as of tonight when I get home from work to pull them all up to throw them out. To sum up a long story: I'm not sure if the two shops are affiliated, but I'll keep patronizing the Johnson's Farmstand because aside from importing some of their fruits from California, they have some really economically focused business practices that I'd like to support. I will not shop again at the greenhouse next door though, for fear of the bacterial spot! http://www.farmfresh.org/food/farm.php?farm=930 4-Town farm near the Seekonk/Rehoboth/Swansea border has healthy--yet slightly pricey--plants every year (annual and perennial). This year I purchased two blueberry bushes, two hydrangea, and various other herbs and annuals, of which NONE show any sign of disease. Customer service here is great. They also operate a farmstand out of the same building as the flower shop. I consistently visit 4-Town farm because their produce selection is always fresh. You can tell this farm has been in the family for 5 generations... http://4townfarm.com J&L Landscape and Garden on 44 in Seekonk is a great supplier for bulk soil, stones, mulches, etc. They also offer a variety of plants. The staff was friendly and knew a lot about various species. I took issue with their recommendation that I apply insecticide (read: poison) to my cherry trees to kill the bugs one year**. I guess it's just me, but shouldn't farmers be advocating for the END of chemical fertilizers and xxxxx-icides? Seemed odd to me/the organic gardener. After a terrible failure with the product**, I have since stopped using that product and stopped returning to J&L. http://www.jandllandscapingcoinc.com/index.html LittleTree Nursery(ies?) in North Seekonk specializes in an immense selection of young trees, 'bonzai' style garden trees, and loads of those ugly evergreen trees (that are shaved like poodles). They do sell other garden related items and tools, but specialize more in landscape design. http://www.littletreenurserygroup.com/landscaping.html **PS: The chemical J&L recommended was a product from Bayer, I'm not too sure of the exact name, but it is supposed to enter the entire plant from the roots and protect for an entire year after just one application. My trees could have done with a second application this year, but after one I think I've polluted my yard enough. What a terrible, $40 product recommendation. The product works as long as there aren't immense rainfall totals washing it all away to the ocean, and even when the weather was dry, the results were minimal. My cherry trees were able to send out about 6 uneaten leaves per branch before the bugs continued their feast.

Gardenhood in Grant Park posted that they have some unusual Helleborus in right now, including yellow ones. They're only open on weekends for the next few weeks.

I went by the Home Depot in Roswell today (Hwy 92 near Woodstock Rd) and they had a group of Harry Lauder's walking stick (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'). Looks like a smallish 3 gallon container - $29.97. They are on consignment from a local nursery. Very nice forms, contorted branches for winter interest and all of them loaded with catkins.

Many years ago, I grew a large Harry Lauder's walking stick in the garden. The family hated it, calling it grotesque and ugly. I finally acceded to their suggestions and removed it. I can't pass one at a nursery, without having fond memories of my old contorted tree!

I checked with the Pikes store at Tucker and they have the Helleborus, so I feel a road trip coming up!

I love my walking sticks! They are so different from the cookie-cutter sameness of most small shrubs and trees. Never had much interest in hellebores though. I guess the price is kind of a turn off.

WHEN can you plant the Hellebores?

ALSO, last fall I planted some crocus & daffidols that have been slowly peaking out lately. They have flowered, but are VERY small, any idea what user error I could have committed? I put bulb in the ground w/ fertilizer, black dirt, etc.

Appreciate any help ya'll want to give me. Thanks Jan

You can plant Helleborus anytime the weather is confortable enough for outdoor activities. They must have good drainage, reasonably fertile soil and prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, but perform well in soil that is slightly acidic. Unless you amend your red clay with compost, leaf mold, gypsum. Natures Helper, etc., it would probably be wise to add a handful of Dolomitic Lime (powdered) around the plants when you install them, then water well. After they become established, during dry spells (include winter), water only when the top 3" of the soil becomes dry.

The energy for producing first blooms was stored in your bulbs when you planted them. Small flowers may indicate: Small and/or poorly developed bulbs, improper storage, bulbs exposed to ethylene gas (ripening fruit, such as apples), etc.
During early fall, feed them with a recommended application of a 1-2-2 NPK formulated fertilizer,such as 5-10-10, 6-12-12. DO NOT remove the foliage until it becomes yellow (or brown).

We've missed the event for this year, but this farm grows Hellebore here in GA, and if you are looking for unique varieties, I bet they can help you. You might give them a call. :)

On March 5 and 6th, 2010, from 10am to 4pm, take the opportunity to see thousands of lenten roses (Helleborus x hybridus) in full bloom at Piccadilly Farm which is located at 1971 Whippoorwill Rd, Bishop, Georgia near Watkinsville. Turn from GA 53 at the Oconee Civic Center on to Union Church Rd., then right on Whippoorwill. Phone 706-769-6516. The owners Sam and Carleen Jones will be there to greet you. Sadly they have no website, but the trip is worth it. Purchase plants to take home!

Thanks, but I have been to Picadilly Farms and they had nothing that was very exciting to me. If you are just starting to grow Helleborus, it probably would be worth the trip. They also offered an assortment of conifers, if that happens to be your "cup of tea". I grow a few dwarf Chamaecyparis cultivars, but that's about my limit. Instead, I prefer the JM cultivars and grow about 35 different ones of those.

A friend found some Helleborus x ericsmithii 'Pink Beauty' at a Lowes near her (NW Atlanta), but when I stopped at the Chamblee store, they had none and no one working in their garden center even knew what a Helleborus was.
The HD at Tucker had H. x ericsmithii, but all of the pots were unlabeled. I guess the grower either didn't know the name or left them unlabeled to avoid paying royalties on a patented plant. I have also seen unlabeled KO Roses (all are patented) at HD, probably for the same reason.
