Guest Picks: Fresh Design Finds For the Nursery
Blogger Laura From Lolalina Shares 20 Fun Modern Pieces Both Babies and Adults Will Like
Design for the little ones has come a long way in recent years! Gone are the matchy-matchy rooms with coordinating wallpaper border (unless that's your cuppa tea!); hip, modern parents today have tons of options when it comes to decorating the nursery in a fun and functional way. I've rounded up some of my current favorites, from the sleek and modern to the quirky and handmade. Enjoy! — Laura from Lolalina
French Animal A-Z Poster
I absolutely adore Swiss brand Océchou, the illustrations on the prints, cards, and other little goodies are sweet and fun with a Euro flair. This alphabet poster is killing me with cuteness, and I love that the animal names are in French!
Oeuf Flag Garland
Buntings, flags, pennants, garlands — whatever you choose to call them, I am a huge fan of this festive adornment. I like that these flags from Oeuf are hand-knit from super soft alpaca wool, adding wonderful texture and a warm, heartfelt touch to baby's room... or any room in the house!
EXPEDIT Shelving unit
The Expedit is such a versatile piece, and this size is just right for using in the nursery. I would lay it on its side and tuck baskets into the cubbies for storage. You could use the top surface to display a few favorite toys, or have a cushion made to fit, turning it into extra seating.
Modern Baby Clock - Hedgehog
This little hedgehog clock from Decoylab would add so much personality to a nursery, and I love that it's not too cutesy — it would work even after the little one has moved out of the crib. Be sure to check out the other animals in their shop as well!
Pom Pom Blanket, Pink
Who says you always have to shop from kids stores for nursery items? This hot pink pom-pom–trimmed throw from Calypso St. Barth caught my eye recently, and I think it would be gorgeous tossed over the arm of a rocker in a little girl's nursery.
Modern Kids Chairs
These pint-size Panton chairs are just begging to have kids clambering all over them. The fact that it's an icon of modern design, comes in five fun colors, and costs under $150 is icing on the cake.
Rolling Storage Crates
You can never have too much storage in a child's room! These rolling storage crates from Serena & Lily have a vintage vibe that would work equally well for a girl or a boy. I would use one for baby toys and board books now, and repurpose it to hold extra blankets or stacks of magazines once my little one was big. Casters make it easy to transport from room to room — always a plus!
Monte Vola Glider
This fresh take on the wingback chair is sleek and modern, plus it looks super comfy and supportive — just what you need during those late-night feedings. Bonus: It's crafted by hand, eco-friendly, and sustainable. If I could do over my home nursery with an unlimited budget, this glider would be at the top of my list!
Baby Boat Mobile
Adorable little boats with spinning sails hang from white painted branches on this mobile from Made by Mosey. I love the patchwork details and softly stuffed shapes, and baby will too! Each piece is handmade by Melbourne-based artist Madeleine Sargent.
Flower Burst Crib Bedding
I like that this crib bedding from Skip Hop is fresh and modern but with a vintage-feminine twist that gives it more versatility. I could see this being equally at home in an old-fashioned Jenny Lind crib as in the latest mod creation from Oeuf.
Rabbit Nightlight
I think my baby would be comforted by seeing this friendly little guy gently lighting the room at night. Bonus: It looks just as nice unlit, and the molded resin won't break easily should curious little hands pull it off a shelf!
Sheepskin Rug
I love having a sheepskin rug in the nursery — it feels super cushy underfoot, and makes a snuggly little play spot for baby. And if you get tired of having it on the floor, try tossing it over a chair in winter for that cozy Scandinavian look!
Silhouette Print
A custom silhouette print featuring your baby's sweet profile is such a lovely touch for the nursery. I especially like the offerings from Simply Silhouettes, and the oversized option is my favorite. Personalize it with your own photograph, colors and text.
Modern Baby Bedding
When I was putting together my baby's nursery, I didn't want to invest in a big crib bedding set, but most of the separates I found were either covered in cartoon characters or just plain boring. Enter Serena & Lily. I love their crib sheets — they are super soft and smooth and come in a range of chic patterns, like the classic green and white trellis above. And if you get jealous because the crib is looking more pulled together than your own bed, don't fret; these come in grownup bed sizes, too!
Bus Bookshelf - Orange
Beep beep! What could be cuter than a cheery orange bus holding a selection of baby's favorite picture books? This little bookshelf from DwellStudio would be perfect in a reading corner, and it looks cool even when empty.
Paper Dolls Storage Bin
I love this paper dolls bin from DwellStudio so much it makes me wish I had a daughter to shop for! It would make an adorable storage spot for a set of wood blocks or a well-loved collection of stuffed animals.
Upper & Lowercase ABC Blocks
I was so happy to find these bright, modern ABC blocks, I snapped up a set on the spot. I love that the blocks feature a simple sans serif font and no fussy extras, just upper and lowercase letters in a cheerful color palette.
Suzette the Fox Mini Blabla
Blabla makes the most adorable hand-knit toys, and Ms. Suzette the Fox here is one of my favorites. Like all Blabla dolls, she is super soft and squishy, perfect for baby to cuddle and chew!
Draper Stripe Rug in Persimmon Cream
Orange is an undeniably happy color. In a girl's room, I would pair this rug with fun pink accents, like a pink Moroccan pouf and pom-pom trimmed throw, plus eclectic art and simple light wood or white furniture for a global-modern look.
Jonathan Adler Ipanema Tote
I know this Jonathan Adler bag is meant for adults, but as soon as I laid eyes on that cheery little sailboat graphic I imagined using it in the nursery instead. Hung on a doorknob or decorative hook, it could corral anything from stray toys to sweaters — and double up as a very chic diaper bag too.
