Rain barrels and freezing temps

Iris GW

In Walter Reeves's gardening column in the AJC today there was a question of how to handle full rain barrels when freezing temps arrive. The writer was afraid that the contents would freeze and harm the barrel (due to expansion).

Walter said that while draining the barrel would be the best solution, he personally wasn't going to worry about his own rain barrel (and 275 gallon water tank!) unless we have a week of temperatures consistently below 25 degrees.

Something to consider.
