How to remove 3 yr old Mimosa

I have fenced in my yard and now an area I have not yet tackled needs to be tamed since it is now obviously part of my yard. this includes several young mimosa trees including one 3 yr old tree (amazing how much they grow) that is about 3"-4" inches in diameter. There are some of the same age that we cut down last year but never killed so obviouly they are resprouting. If I cut them down and try and dig them up will bits of roots resprout all over? Do I need to "poison" them first, which means I will have to wait till they sprout? I would really like to palnt some things ther and want to get rif of them in order to do so this spring. Plus there are more in an untamed area on the other side of the fence that is technically my neighbors property although it is very close to an easement area. Any hints on how to keep from having them sprout all over my yard? I know kill the trees, but I don't know if they will go for it. She thinks they are pretty.
