Pruning advice for a 3yr old hickory?

Last question to all you who are wiser than me.

This is a sentimental tree. My father transplanted it and it's done very well. Probably ~12 ft tall at this point.

Thoughts on any pruning that needs to be done to get it off to a proper start?

Are these earlier pictures? The tree doesn't look like it is 12' in the pictures. Have you removed the stake yet? If this is not a recent picture, do you have recent pictures?

hey.. welcome ...

get rid of the stake.. run out right now .... and do it .. so the rest of them.. wont bug the heck out of you .. lol ...

a stake is simply to hold it up.. for the first year.. while the roots grab hold..

unless you really screwed up the planting.. that should only need be for the first year ...

next ... whats your goal with the tree??

walk under it.. without poking out your eyes??? .. then take off one or two of the bottom branches ...

and that would be about all for this year ...

think of leaves as food making machines.. NEVER cut off too many at one time..

think in terms of the hundred years this tree might live ... there is never really any hurry with trees.. my only deadline.. is doing it before i have to pay for it ... which looking at your tree.... is anytime in the next decade .. lol ...

the only other thing i would suggest.. is that i would increase the size of the mulch ring to 3 to 4 feet ... and perhaps a little deeper AWAY from the tree ... in my yard.. that is mostly to keep the idiot in control of the riding lawnmower and weedwhip ... namely me.. away from it ...

BTW.. what is the tree??? .. find some leaves on the ground.. if you can.. for an ID ...

Pam, I'm not sure what you meant by that but i think you're missing the point. It's about developing better root system regardless of where you plant, what the climate is and what tree species are. Better root system means better/faster establishment. It is a pain in the butt dealing with one long tap root that get circled around in the container. You have to mess with it to get it straightened out and not to mention more digging to get it deep enough. You don't have to worry about it with rootmaker's way. You just simply dig a hole and drop the tree in and move on. Here is the info from rootmaker website about seedlings plant out.. Question: Do you have any information on the use/success on the out planting of container seedlings grown in RootMaker II containers directly in the field for conservation/reforestation type projects? Answer: Tree seedlings in RootMakerÂ® II propagation containers are routinely taken to the field when they are 12 to 16 inches tall and 3 to 4 months old. This has been done by hundreds of nurseries across the country. Most do fall planting Â September or October and some have drip irrigation and others do not. (Drip irrigation assures nearly 100% survival. But even without drip irrigation, the success rate is quite high, except for the occasional severe drought immediately following planting). The primary reason for planting tree seedlings at a larger size is that in the small growth stage, telling seedlings that will make winner trees from culls is tough and the cull rate may be as high as 25 to 30% or more for the oaks. In one gallons, the cull rate drops to 7 to 10% and with 3 gallons to 2 to 3%.

Cold, moist stratification is helpful for the hickories. May not be absolutely necessary - I sold a couple of gallons of shagbark nuts to John Brittain at NRNTN this spring - they have some clients who prefer their hickories grafted on hickory understock, rather than pecan. So long as they'd not been in the freezer(these hadn't - just held in an unheated room over winter), he said they'd germinate - and he's been growing 'em longer than me. Time to germination... I'm not sure; certainly not as quick as pecans. I just don't keep track of that minutia. Rootpruning containers will do fine - a good way to handle them.. I often start large numbers in a cattle lick tub (probably 15-20 gallon container) grow 'em for a year or two, then dump it, shake 'em free and either rootprune and transplant directly or pot 'em up to grow for an additional year or two(and often attempt grafting while they're growing in the pots. Shagbarks may not be 6 inches tall by 3 years. Shellbarks may do that the first year, then jump by leaps and bounds in subsequent years. Well, comparatively...have some 2-3 yr old shellbark seedlings in pots that are probably 2 ft tall - and I don't do much in the way of pushing with fertilizers.

TO: gunsiloveguns ..... be patient .... some nuts (acorns) germinate in 10 to 30 days .... most true nuts take much longer. A rule of thumb ... the harder and thicker the shell is ... the longer it will take to suck up moisture and for the "sprout" to emerge. It could take 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on the conditions ... and every nut is different (unique) I have had red oak acorns lie in the ground for up to 4 years before they finally began to grow. (Don't know why the squirrels didn't find them) A word of advice that my DAD taught me .... "If you want to play Mother Nature, you have to be patient and do things in a big way! She puts billions of nuts and seeds out there, in hopes of growing just a few trees or plants. The more you plant, the more success stories you will have ... and the disappointments you will have, too. We all have a lot of time on our hands, and once you do your job, let Mother Nature take the reins!!" My Dad spent thousands of hours in the woods and planted tens of thousands of nuts ...EVERYWHERE ... he always had a pocket-ful of nuts with him .. whenever he went afield .... and his pockets were empty ... when he came home!!! I meet senior residents of our Town, every once in a while, that tell me about the tree, in their yard, that came about, because MY DAD planted a nut there 20, 30, or 40 years ago!!! ...And ... I am doing the same thing!!!!

Need pruning advice for my peach tree

Note: I am the originator of this post and a self-taught gardener! From my understanding, it's a great thing to have an established v-shape already, so YAY on your pickens! I would start by pruning for the three D's - dead, damaged or diseased. Also, the smaller branches I would completely cut back 10-20'' from the ground. Also, be very cautious about when you prune in the spring. This past year, I pruned around my usual April 1st timeframe, and then we got hit with an untimely and detrimental frost that messed the entire growing season for so many plants. I'm in New Haven, Connecticut for reference. My peach tree got inflicted with a serious case of leaf curl and I thought it would die! I saved it by making a homemade anti-fungal solution of water and oregano oil. I also gave it one dowse of a water and beach solution as a Hail Mary since the harvest for the year was shot. All these leaves had turned brown and fell off. Then, the tree came back with a fury, more than I could've imagined, and made a full recovery sprouting new leaves everywhere. :) Next year when I prune, I will be dowsing the tree in my homemade oregano oil solution to hold back the spores that come with the spring season and could possibly reestablish a fresh case of leaf curl. It's good to do this as a preventive since they are so susceptible to the disease. I've read to remove and burn old leaves, but I haven't done this and am going to see how the solution helps alone. If it's helpful, I'm also going to try this method on my peonies that caught leaf blotch this year, too.

Hmmmm...Looks more like Fraxinas that Carya. Anyhow, it looks fine to me.

Yep. Doesn't look like a hickory to me, either - that opposite branching habit doesn't fit - and, there is no way in creation that a 3-yr old hickory would be 12 ft tall, no matter how much Miracle-Gro you poured to it.
12 inches, maybe, at 3 years; some less than that - but the taproot might be 4+ ft long.

did i tell you to get rid of that stake.. before he got here... lol ...

find a selection of those dead leaves... and see if you can find the right one ...

hickory have compound leaves .. like at the link

Sorry--my wording was misleading. I planted it 3 years ago (maybe 4Ã¢ÂÂ¦ the memory fadesÃ¢ÂÂ¦ no more than 4 as we've only been in the house 4 years). It was ~12 inches when I planted it. So I'm uncertain as to its full age.

I'm also guessing at height--it may only be 10ft. But definitely more than 6 or 8. The stake (which, yesÃ¢ÂÂ¦ I'll removeÃ¢ÂÂ¦) is at ~armpit level.

For posterity, Leafsnap's other suggestions (not shown in the pic) include Carya cordiformis (Bitternut Hickory), Carya tomentosa (Mocknut Hickory), Fraxinus americana (White Ash), and Fraxinus pennsylvanica (Green Ash)

It looks more like a white ash to me, although it's hard to tell from the image. I wouldn't do any pruning and I would make sure it can move freely in the wind so the trunk can stiffen up. It looks a little spindly. You are aware of the EAB...

Well, Leafsnap isn't a very good program... its obviously one of the Fraxinus species.

My guess is that he ISN'T aware of Emerald Ash Borer...
