ISO Best Oaks & Hickories for Southeast

I need advice about the best oaks and hickories for the southeast. I live in southeastern Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay.

I'm reforesting a 3.5-4 acre area that was clearcut and burned in 1996, then hit by Hurricane Isabel in 2003. After the hurricane, the area was logged, burned, and is now an empty field. I'm planting longleaf pines, loblolly pines, and bald cypresses with smaller groves of other conifers.

I'm looking for oaks and hickories with good color too.

The VA Seedling program offers several varieties of oak (black, cherrybark, chestnut, northern red, pin, sawtooth, southern red, water, willow, and white oak), but no hickories.

In addition to recommended oaks and hickories, do you have suggestions for seedling companies? I'm looking at Musser, Carino and Lawyer but they are a long way from southeast VA. I'd like to find a seedling source closer to home.

Many thanks,

Pam
