Bring them in and make Pear Butter out of them, or Pear Minced Meat. It is w-a-y better than apple and oodles and gobs better than store-bought. Both recipes are easy-peasie to make and so delicious.

My pear trees didn't make this year. Too much damage from last year's installation of leach lines - they are still in major shock, poor things.

Is it too late to cook them if the pears are frozen? The fruit was smaller than I have ever seen this year. Normally they are huge pears. The trees also suffered major wind damage this spring/early summer.

I wish I had a little cottage to decorate for the holidays. Someday..........

I also do the rounds even in the snow. I'm always amazed at how many perennials actually keep their green leaves all through the winter. There's always something to see and something to plan when walking through the garden.

Oh, good! I'm not crazy. I talk to my plants, the birds, the deer, the frogs, the squirrels, the snake (hiding now), etc.

No snow here, but the garden is definitely done!

Most of my talking is done to the dog....stay out of the garden, quit digging that hole; what is that in your mouth; all accompanied by some rather choice expletives! Sure glad I don't have close neighbors.

We got our first big freeze of the year Sunday night (it was literally an Arctic blast!), and I was compelled to go out and give the kiddos a pep talk before the storm hit. I dragged the plants in pots into the garage and told them that they could go back outside on Wednesday, when it would be warmer. They looked so sad as I closed the garage door! Then I did the rounds in the beds, telling all the Zone 8 guys to hold on and be strong. Now they are all covered in snow, poor kids. Brrrrrr.

In Victoria we got hit hard too, xantippe.

It's sooooooooooooo cold. Wind chill minus 15!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm, I thought it was just ME! LOL. I say things like.."oh, well hello"(when I see a 1st bloom on a plant), or "go to sleep and I'll wake you when it's spring." How about "what are you still doing up?" (when I see a plant hanging on this time of year.) I'll be glad when we have our annual "reunion" in the spring.

Lets talk real weather. It has been -19 to -24 for the last ohhhhh I'd say a week or so. Wind chills down to -36. We have a good 3 feet of snow....and it is snowing again.

Since I first posted, the weather turned very mild so I didn't do much mulching after all. Finally, I do think the ground has frozen, esp. in some areas. My lilacs have big green buds on them! Woke up to an icey road out front and the back porch is a slippery mess. Plus, the temp continues to go down.

Sierra! I'm glad I'm not at your house right now. My goodness, that's cold.

Zone 2?! I don't think I could hack it! That sounds like a survival sport!
