I hosted one of the last ones we did here on Davis Islands. With me working on campus (HCC) Saturdays it's going to be hard for me to attend. :(

I am interested, but I need a few months to get plants started, to have something to swap

I'm excited, between those of us here at GW and our gardening friends and neighbors that aren't on GW, we should be able to get a decent group. I know of two people already, not on GW, that will come. If we each invite our non-GW friends, we can pull this off.

Laura and Olyagrove--I'd need some time for things to root as well. So how about we aim for June?

Tampaart-I see no reason it has to be on a Saturday. Why not have it on a Sunday?

So, does some Sunday in June sound ok?

Cathy & I would come too. I have not started any plants but still have lots of seeds to share, and supplies...tons of unused 1 gallon and 3 gallon nursery containers, a few 10 gallon containers if there's any interest, and several 3' and 5' T-posts. One problem for us though, we'll be in the Bahamas the last two weeks of June....

Tom & Cathy, excellent! I was scouring for containers lately, never enough.

We're narrowing it down...how's Sunday, June 7th or 14 th sounding to everyone?

BTW--do we know each other? Are you Tom and Cathy owners of SS Tomcat and a house on Cat cay?

I guess it's majority rules on date? I have no life, can't leave dad alone so have no plans for any date in near future, lol. I can do any day at any time, now, May or June. If we do it now, I can swap unrooted cuttings and such and you can do your own rooting. If we do it later, I'll start rooting things now. I'm open to just about anything.

I would love to be there. I have nothing to swap...heck I have nothing but sand in my yard at the moment...but perhaps you would allow me bring some eats or drinks?

I've never been to a swap, so I wasn't aware we did eats and drinks, eeks! What else don't I know? Teach me, obi wan.

Eats and drinks sounds fine to me, not sure if the rest would feel ok with that. Majority rules again?

Olyagrove-Sunday, May 31st, is fine with me. Is that enough time for everyone else?

If we have this in my backyard, would you all like me to just dig and take cuttings then? or have me dig, cut and pot in advance? It would save the plants a double shock/replant to do it at the time of the swap, which might help them. I can do either, let me know.

I think starting cuttings and plants before the swap is a good idea, to guarantee a plant that will grow. Reporting from a pot into the ground is not a huge shock for a plant, as the roots are not disturbed a lot...

Who is interested in what? Lets post wants and haves, and update it as go :)

Sorry for the late post, I'm having a lot of computer problems...just added more memory and now having to bypass my VOIP router just to keep things going.

May 31st sounds good. While I don't have any plants I do also have a 50lb bag of Florikan Nutricote Total 13-13-13. This is the All-purpose Dynamite but at $85/bag it comes out to $1.70/lb vs. $11/2lbs of Dynamite = $5.50/lb, if anyone is interested.

This is shaping up to be a nice get-together!

My backyard in NW Hillsborough.
No young kids or pets please (I have an inground pool with NO kid fence and sharp rocks around edges. I also have lots of pets, some not friendly to other pets.)
Bring your trades and stuff.
I have a solar heated pool, so if you're ok with strangers seeing you in a swim suit, and you want to swim, bring a suit and towel. (Not sure I'm ok with you seeing me in a suit, so I'll probably stay dry, lol.)
If you want to make it picnic like with food/drinks, bring your own. I can get ice/cups and such.

As to time, again, I'm open. The earliest would probably be 10ish as I do need time to deal with my father. And the latest would be 5 pm, same reason.

I'll get a list of what I have/want going and add it to here as well.

Sounds good. I also have several 4CF bags of perlite. Amazing that they are getting $5 for 2 gallons at the Big Box stores when I can get 4CF (30 gallons) for $9.75....

The idea of the swap sounds good although I work many weekends and don't really know my schedule until a week or two (if I'm lucky) ahead of time so I could not yet commit to any day.

I'm assuming that a "swap" is not necessarily a one-for-one swap and therefore those without items for swap wouldn't necessarily be turned away. Although they may need to start at the back of the line, so to speak. If I bring plants for swap, I don't really want to bring them back home so I'd be happy to leave them with someone whether they gave me one or not.

Like others have said, I'm not sure what others would like but when I have visitors to my yard I tend to pull a number of different plants up on the spot and either throw them in a little dirt or wrap roots in a wet paper towel so I'm sure I could come up with something.

I'm typically pulling up small plants or finding seeds of
Chinese Hat (red)
Belize Sage (salvia miniata)
Firecracker flower (russelia equisitiformis) red or pale yellow
Coral bush also called firecracker flower or bush (russelia sarmentosa)
Salvia coccinea plants or seeds (red or pink)
Beautyberry
Coral Bean plants or seeds (Erythrina herbacea)
various shrimp plants
Orange justicia
Dwarf powderpuff (seeds or plants)
Black and blue salvia (S guarantica)
Red Cannas (Canna indica) seeds or plants
Heliconia (red with yellow flower)
Indian curry trees
a couple of different impatins
A few different bromeiads - nothing rare - matchstick, a couple of long thin dangling varieties

Probably a few more that I'm not thinking of. I did see a key lime coming up from seed. I believe they are true to seed. If so, it's from a very prolific tree.

I don't have a big wish list other than hummingbird or butterfly plants. I've picked up a few new ones in the past couple of weeks going to the USF sale and then visiting a nursery in Wimauma yesterday that we met at USF. I did see a yellow and an orange cestrum that I once had that I'd like to have again. Although I have plenty of varieties of salvia and cupheas, there are many that are not typically sold in Florida that I'm looking for. I only have the one variety of heliconia - a plant that is only pollinated by hummingbirds. We are considering a composite flower garden for the butterflies. Since most of our flowers are tubular for the hummingbirds, we will be looking for composite flowers.

I'll be bringing tropicals if there is interest. Broms, heliconia, bananas, orchids,hoyas, chenille plants, palm seedlings, crotons, gingers etc. I'll compile a full list soon. I also have some garden art I no longer use. With some spray paint, they could be good as new. I would be interested in other tropicals, rocks, balinese/polynesian garden art, gardening books & possibly other plants that don't spread or get too huge.

Looks like we'll have a nice crowd..cool! Perhaps we should start a thread on the exchange page?

I'll start one on the Florida exchange right now. Keep in mind, I've never been to swap, so please, let me know what needs to be done and such. I didn't even know about food/drinks, so what else am I unaware of???

With the swap tomorrow morning, I thought I'd bring back this original post since it has my long post (see 4 posts up). I wasn't even sure if I'd be able to make it up until earlier this week. I haven't heard much regarding specific requests for my plants so I thought I'd give everyone one last chance to read my list.

I'm going to post a list on the exchange what I'm currently planning to bring. There's still time for me to make changes.

I'm always looking for orchids, broms, epies, and shade plants.

Nothing makes you want to clean and weed like a group of total strangers coming to see your house/yard, lol. I've been cleaning and weeding for days now. See you all tomorrow!

I'm interested in some bromeliads and salvia but I guess I'll have to see them before I know if I already have them...I'm not so good on some of the names. Although almost all of mine are tagged with names.

I'm getting my plants all grouped together so I don't forget any thing.
