Rain and Humidity--They Love!

Rain with oppressive humidity has improved the quality of blooms!

IN THE HEART OF IT ALL Can't say enough good things about this one this year--vibrant, clean, well budded.

GRACE LIKE RAIN Looked better as the day went by. Plant is not that well budded, but is young.

Your In the Heart of It All clump looks great. The flowers look large, voluptuous and colorful. Grace Like Rain is another pretty one. The hospital bed has a variety of shapes and colors. I like the look of the cone flowers with the white lilies and daisies.

I forgot to include Gilded by Grace--small, a bit short, but perfect bloom.

Oh, Kippy! You are SO generous! Thank you (NOT)! LOL! You're very welcome to collect the ones which have grown since the last rain several months ago from just down from the house here. They should make marvelous holiday decorations with sufficient gold spray paint! I'm glad you're more relaxed, Ingrid. I know the feeling, except for watching for the little green shoots starting to creep from under the soil... If you have that nasty invader in the shadier areas of your garden, that means there is water there. It grows where there is water, from Mexico to Canada. It CAN be eradicated,but it does demand herbicides. If you dig the tubers and leave them in the direct sun, they shrivel and die (vampires!), and I have done that with literally several hundred over the years. I've unearthed quite a few the size of a V-8 American automobile engine and they shriveled and dried up once exposed to the elements. Others have been "dispatched" with buckets of "the devil's brew" herbicide we won't mention, with the tendrils wrapped around inside them so they sucked it up like wicks. Linda, As always you have a terrific selection of beauties! You and I seem to have the same taste in daylilies because every one of them you have shown so far is one I would grow myself. My absolute favorite of all these lovelies is Indy Heartstopper! Talk about a perfect name for it...it does indeed make your heart stop for a second it's so beautiful. We had lots & lots of rain last week with some of the rivers overflowing so I know what you mean about all the weeds. But we can't complain too much when other are in a drought, can we? Do the cats still go outside when it rains? Lily doesn't mind getting wet, but Fat Cat Nemo is a big sissy and stays inside...LOL. Celeste

Hi Scott, Well, if the squirrels are an indication (grrrr! They're just large rodents with cute fluffy tails!), the nuts must be worth having? The squirrels are in the tree daily collecting nuts. Then they chew through some of them, green husk and all.....are they nuts? (pun intended) Why don't the squirrels wait for the nuts to mature? Judging from the half-chewed ones the squirrels are dropping to the ground, I think they look pretty filled out. The first 6 or 7 years we lived here, we hardly EVER had any squirrels bother anything. The last couple of years, though, we've had gazillions of them. The only difference I can think of is that Sheila, our Australian Shepherd who HATES squirrels and used to chase them endlessly, is now deaf and half-blind so the squirrels don't have her harassing them anymore. I bet the rain misses us almost completely, and I've been feeling like that for a couple of days now. As the professional weather talking heads yammer on and on about heavy rains and flooding here because of Ike, I shake my head and say "Oh, no it isn't! Not here!" I tend to think you and I are right and they are wrong. The more the storm trends eastward near the coast, the more I see our chances of rain dwindling quickly. Having said that, I still think the Texas Gulf Coast is in for a really awful time.....and I woldn't want the rainfall or surge they're about to get. I was thinking about all the gardeners in the path of Ike. Just imagine how devastated their gardens, landscapes & agricultural/horticultural enterprises will be! Dawn

We wear those little white respiratory masks when chopping up and shredding leaves. The mask look silly (the dogs and cats look at us like we've lost our minds), but generally no one sees us since our house sits back so far from the road, and the nearest house is about 100 yards away with a woodland between them and us. I've also occasionally worn those when multiple days of wildfires have left the skies filed with smoke that just won't disperse and go away. We haven't had rain in only about 3 weeks, but the ground is so dry you'd think it had been months and months. It looks like we'll end the year about 11-12" below our average annual rainfall, but that will be for the second straight year, so we are building up a huge rainfall deficit long-term that we'll never recover from completely. I remember that in the drought of 2008, some Carter County ranchers said their ponds, creeks and soil never really recovered between the drought of 05-06 and the drought of 08-09. It seems like that is happening more and more in this part of the state---you never get full recovery in between prolonged droughts. The tree foliage stayed green really late this year, and then when it finally changed colors, the leaves fell fast. We've been collecting them using the riding mower and its grasscatcher which makes it a fairly easy process. Raking them out of the woods by hand and collecting them by hand takes a lot more time, and I usually don't start that until we've had a prolonged spell of really cold weather because I don't want to rake up any snakes along with those leaves. I have seen snakes in the woods as late as the end of November and as early as February, so my window of opportunity to gather leaves there is fairly brief. I hardly use the leaf vac at all because the bag does fill up quickly. I rake and bag the leaves in the woods, packing the leaves into leaf bags as tightly as I can and then I drag the big heavy bags up out of the woods. Lately Tim mows and just dumps the grass clipping and chopped leaves into molasses feed tubs for me. When I get a chance, I take them into the garden. One day I was doing something else, and by the time he finished mowing he had filled up over a dozen molasses feed tubs and three big trash cans. I mulched my entire winter garden with the clippings and leaves from that one mowing. Now I am dumping them on top of empty beds so winter weeds won't sprout and grow in them all winter long. The winter rye grass decomposes and helps the leaves break down faster. By April, the leaf/grass clipping mulch from November and December is almost compost already. Then I have all those bags of leaves from the woods to put on the beds as a new layer of mulch after the plants are up and growing. Tar and Feather is very eye catching. The flower does look nice and big. Does it get to the registered height?

Hope your heat/humidity goes away soon. Seems cooler here this morning but we've had an overabundance of rain last night.

They all look wonderful to me. I'm glad to see your photo of Betty Jo, I to received one as a bonus and it hasn't bloomed yet, now I know what to look forward to I hope mine looks as pretty.

Julia, Tar and Feather does indeed get to its registered height of 26 inches. It sometimes reblooms too, but I fear that north of here it would be tender, as much of Kaskel's stuff is. It has moderate increase here, but not that slow, as I see it is scattered about the garden.

Gentleman's Lady is my pick of the group. Pumpkin Prince may be blooming in the foliage, but it sure looks generous with its blooms.

The unnamed daylily with the bluish eye is Art Gallery Nouveau.

Yes, Pumpkin Prince is well budded. But it can be slower to open in the morning.

They all look great. My favorites are Gentleman's Lady, Pumpkin Prince, Beautiful Edgings and very pretty Gilded by Grace. Mine won't flower this year, last year it was short. But I saw it in local garden about 3 or 4 years ago and it looked just fine.
So there is a good thing about humidity after all ;)
Oh, I was wondering why you prefer MBL to Free Wheelin?

I missed this one. Hmmm. Gilded by Grace is a lovely one, and the clump of Pumpkin Prince is a beauty. My favorite of your blooms is either In The Heart Of It All, or the one whose name you need to look up. the hospital garden is lovely, Mantis.

Kay, the unknown is Art Gallery Nouveau.

I prefer Marked by Lydia because I think it has grace and airiness, whereas Free Wheelin is just sort of a cast-iron whopper. Free Wheelin also has been slow to increase.

I really like Gilded by Grace, but it reminds me of my Gilded Butterfly - short and low to the ground. It is the same this year as last. Too bad, as it is such a pretty flower.

Your Gilded By Grace looks very pretty and similar the short scapes mine had. I have a rebloom scape coming on mine. I like the perfectly round flower and the double edge. I also like Art Gallery Nouveau, especially the pattern on the sepals. I'll be interested to see how the Lambertsons do for you. Some of them seem very hardy and vigorous here, and others not so much.
