Pumpkins, and Mums, and Gourds, Oh, MY!!

Anyone growing or tucking things into their gardens for the fall? Any pictures for those of us growing in space-deprived pumpkinless areas?

I have 4 colors of daisy mums, and 5 colors of buttom mums planted and perennial so far here for me. I will get a few fall pumpkins soon. Both our Boy Scout troop and the Neighbor In Need program are now selling pumpkins for fundraising. It's a wonderful sight to see the trailers loaded with pumpkins for fall! I will buy mine in a week or two when weather is cooler and they won't rot. They get pumpkins that are fine for cooking and so I make tons of pumpkin stuff with them (and collect my neighbors old pumpkins too, freeze lots of pies!!).
I do not put out any other decorations. I'm slimming down the seasonal decorating to get rid of stuff. I've kept Christmas decorations but no longer have any other seasonal stuff. However as I removed spent annuals from the garden I am cutting the surviving blooms and tucking them into large vases I bought at the thrift store for $1. These I put out on the stairs and outside on the porch with houseplants. They are cheery.

ggg, that sounds neat, putting the vases of annuals on your steps as decor! The great thing about flowers, pumpkins and gourds is that they're biodegradable, so if you decorate using those, it's not like they need to be stored, but I do find my heart gets immensely happy at the sight of a well-glazed ceramic pumpkin lol

It is my first year with vegetable gardening. I have been a huge gardening addict for years!!!! I would rather be outside working in the gardens than shopping in a mall! LOL I learned a lot this year. The PM and pickle worms destroyed a lot of my vegetables. I never did get large pumpkins doe to the excessive heat we had in the late summer. The fruit kept on aborting after pollination. The few pumpkins I grew were small. Well, there is always next year!

Revilo, I started germinating my seeds a couple days ago. I filed the seed edges(except the tip of course), and soaked them in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 6 hrs. Then I put them in moist paper towels covered by a baggie. I provided heat with a heating mat. Results so far: 945.5 Sherwood 03 -- it sprouted and I planted it in a pot. 901 Hebb 02 --ditto 953 Langevin X 1260 Weir(a Connolly cross that I grew my 615 lber. from last year)--ditto 940 Mombert 00-- one is in the process of sprouting, and one hasn't shown signs of sprouting yet. My tentative cross plans are(I stress tentative): 945.5 Sherwood X 940 Mombert 00(or 901 Hebb) 940 Mombert sibbed both ways. 901 Hebb X 940 Mombert 00 Connolly cross X 940 Mombert The 945.5 Sherwood will likely get the best growing spot. Hehe...SURPRISE! You can most definitly decorate them but eating them isnt reccomended i hear that not good unless really young and even then they probably not all that good. experiment try it out and if you dont want to see them again make sure you get rid of all the gourds and dont throw them back in the compost :o) post some pics!

For a spring planting, the OSU-recommended planting dates are: Pumpkins April 10-30 or later (depends on when you want to harvest them) Winter Squash May 15 June 15 For a fall planting, the OSU recommended planting dates are: Pumpkins & Winter Squash July 15-30 Note I listed both winter squash and pumpkins. That's because many of the more decorative (and mostly non-orange) pumpkins actually are winter squash. Also, technically speaking, all pumpkins are winter squash but not all winter squash are pumpkins. The spring planting dates for pumpkins is earlier because the types of winter squash that we call pumpkins (C. pepo and C. maxima types) will germinate in slightly cooler soils. By planting them in April, you have the best chance of getting plants off to a good, fast start so they are larger and more resilient when the SVBs show up, which may help them survive the SVBs. The types of winter squash we commonly refer to as winter squash generally need warmer soils for soil germination, so they are planted later in spring or even in early summer. The fall planting dates are the same because soil temperatures are plenty warm in July. If you've never grown squash or pumpkins, you may not have any squash vine borers around. I didn't have any for he first 7 or so years. Once they find you, though, you'll have them about 9 years out of 10. Carol, I've never had much eat peppers, but the pests I have found eating sweet peppers are turtles. They also love to eat low-hanging tomatoes. I've seen them stand up on their hind legs, with their front legs resting on the plant, a stake or a cage, and eat both peppers and tomatoes. So, maybe you have turtles. I've never seen squirrels eating sweet peppers but I think maybe they do because I've found half-eaten peppers higher up on a plant than any ground-based turtle or rabbit could reach. jmichigan, I wonder why they aren't pollinating. You know you can hand-pollinate, right? Just use a small paintbrush (the kind from a watercolor set is fine) or Q-tip to transfer the pollen from the male flower to the female flower. It is easy. It works best early in the day shortly after the flowers have opened up. Squash vine borers are the bane of my existence and totally destroyed my ability to grow all the many kinds of pumpkins and squash that I used to grow. One of these days, we're going to build a hoop house covered in netting to keep them out, though it might not happen until Tim retires. Dawn

It freezes too early here, for pumpkins...but we do have clematis still blooming, coneflowers, daisies and even a few roses. The stock and cosmos by the house are still blooming, despite the frosts. Everything further out is pretty much done for the fall, except the apples. I hope they're ripe enough to eat this weekend :)

Lavender lass, my cosmos are growing too and really adding a beautiful bright spot to an otherwise slowing garden. I will have to remember that for next year and plant a bunch more :)

It's from a few years ago, but one of my favorites.
This year my daughter grew some very large pumpkins. Going to pick them this weekend.

I loved this picture the first time I saw it! Looks like it belongs in Better Homes and Gardens!! I love pumpkins and have grown many different ones myself although not for a few years since I have filled the big vegie garden with flowers....:/ What are the big green ones? They are so interesting looking?

Each year I do Halloween decor in a big way although my pumpkins now are artificial for the most part. Smashing pumpkins is sometimes a Halloween trick and not a musical band around here...:(

CTC ~ It amazes me how you get so much into that tiny yard! I love it! And I need pics from your little yard cause it is just such an awesome garden space! I'll post pics of my kiddy friendly Halloweeny yard just for the kids; big ones included! :)

That is a great picture and I love those huge green ones so much!! I also am going to see if I can get ahold of some of those teensy white pumpkins and train on my chain -link fence next year because they're so cute.

I was going to make a post with my cosmos, hydrangea, and blue lace delphinium that rebloomed...and then the rain knocked it over and broke the delphinium. Darn it!! Lol. I meant to buy mums to fallify my garden, but have nowhere to plant when I'm done, so holding off for now :)
