What kind of bug is this on my tomatoes?

I've already dusted them but I would be interested in knowing what they are called and the best way to get rid of them. I've only seen them on 2 of my 9 plants so far.

Thanks Amber. I'm still learning. I didn't even know the little black grasshopper were called lubbers until recently.

I read a bunch on tomato forum. I researched and found out the black bugs are flea beetles. Not much on how to control them, but they come and go, so should leave soon. However I did find the Hornworm? Green worm in some tomatos. Made the holes from bottom. Errrrrr. Hopefully the sevin lawn granuales will get the buggers. We put in a raised bed and put a bunch of tomatos in. It gets morning sun, and the house shades it for afternoon. Growing like crazy, but we just pulled off a bunch of green tomatos because of the worms. Thanks a bunch.

yeah, that's what i thought, too. but over on the tomato forum, they id'd it as leaf-footed stink bug nymph. check out the color plates: http://ftsg.ifas.ufl.edu/LFBIBC.HTM i sprayed some pyrethrin and smushed the ones i could find. at this point in the game, the tomatoes are pretty unhealthy. if this does the trick, great. i'll count my blessings to have had fresh tomatoes from march to july. if not, hello fried green tomatoes and southern peas!

Cardinals. Cardinals are your friend for these bugs. I do not recall seeing them last year or the year before, but the past week or so I have woken in morning hours, looked out my window and seen a male cardinal hopping through the stems of my tomato plants pecking at the stems. I also have had fewer bugs to worry about this week. It is strange that only after saying, "I have yet to see anything that eats these things..." does he show up and start working. It seems to happen that way a lot in my yard. "Oh really? Well, I have never seen that in my... never mind."

A number of teeny tiny fellows get stuck on the stems of my tomatoes. never caused a problem. If you want to ID those very small fellows, I suggest you take a sample to your county's Extension Service where they can look at them with a microscope. The best way to get rid of them is not plant anything green and pave every inch of your whole yard with concrete or tar, or do like the rest of us and cuss at the little buggers when they show up. Nothing seems to work 100% getting rid of them, seems all you can do is slow them down. If anybody has found anything that works 100% (other than a thermonuclear device) PLEASE let me know!

The dang things are so small they go right through my screens.
