Question about rooting cuttings

When rooting cuttings in a ziplock bag what do you do to prevent mold or more importantly what do you do if you think you are starting to see some mold?

I am either starting to get mold or there are little white roots just starting to poke out all over many of the cutting.

its quite possible that you may have little white roots poking out (after all that is how it generally starts).

To prevent mold most people dip into a 5% bleach solution when storing their cuttings. Additionally it has been said that spritzing with hydrogen peroxide can help combat mold.

From your description I would wait, my guess (sight unseen as it is) is that you probably have nothing to worry about. (of course a pic or two would be helpful to be sure).

Hi Chills, Thanks for the reply. I opened the bags and rubbed some of the white dots and they are not mold. Not sure what IÂm going to do with 50-60 rooted cuttings. This is my first attempt at rooting cuttings and so far it looks like its going to be a total success.

Are you sure they are alive? If there's no foliage I wouldn't water them that much. It might cause rot. I wouldn't feed them again until you see some growth. Maybe a dose of B1 or Superthrive to get them started would be a good idea. It sounds a bit unussual but I have plenty of brugs that are quite alive that take their sweet time putting out foliage.

I don't treat a leafless cutting any differently. Obviously a leafless cutting is less likely to survive, but they regularly do. Just put it with the others and cross your fingers. If I can, I lay it flat with multiple nodes touching the soil, to increase the odds.

I'm not great with cuttings yet, either, but my understanding is that most softwood cuttings should be done in rooting medium, and that winter is the appropriate time to take hardwood cuttings (this time of year for softwood). Some prolific plants may root in water, like willow. As a complete aside, my husband cut some cherry and maple saplings down in April for pea sticks (that would be hardwood cuttings), and they have rooted and are growing new leaves in my kitchen garden. I found this online, the URL is below: Propagation: Currants are easily propagated by hardwood cuttings of one-year old wood. Take one-foot cuttings of dormant wood in late winter, dip the base in rooting hormone and pot in ordinary soil. Cuttings will quickly root and are best kept in part shade for the first year. Andrew, I do not know who gave you that info, but I have never found that to be true. I have rooted literally nearly 1000 cuttings over the year and have never had an issue with them flowering the following year. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the root system would be more established the following season if you keep it growing all winter. The issue is that you will have to deal with Mites and other issues if you keep them indoors all winter under lights. Again I personally would your newly rooted plants go dormant depending on their root system, they can establish them selves next growing season. Good luck

It is easy. Here is one suggestion. Get 50-60 pots, fill with soil and pot all the cuttings; place them in a nice sunny location in spring; water them regularly, watch them grow and when the fruit ripens you will know what to do.

Hi ottawan, oh I will be doing that for sure. I will give away some and post some for sale on eBay in 2008.

Right now the roots are just little nubs sticking out all over the cuttings. Should I pot them all now so the roots on the parts that will above the soil will die off before they get too big?
