LOL, Annie, I potted up my 'Black Magic' EE, too. They kept wilting, so I put 'em in a pot and they're growing like crazy.

One of my fav black flowers is Tulip 'Queen of Night' - a spring treat.

Last summer I had 'Black Pearl' peppers. Eventually the black pearls turn red, but the leaves stay black.

My Black Magic EE did the very same thing. Droop, droop, droop in between waterings all summer and not much growth. Oh, it grew new leaves, but never did get really big and bushy and no new babies. Last week I potted it up with some Miracle Grow potting soil and BOOM! It took off and is goin' to town! :)
I had heard of those Black Pearl Peppers, but never saw them before. Wow Nell! I gotta have em, whether or no!

Delphinium 'Cocolate'. Looks like a true black to me.
There are several types of black Columbine. I think 'Cocolate Soldier' is really cute.
There are also several types of black colored Heleborus I belive.
Black Hollyhock.
Thats all I can come up with right now. But knowing me I will likely think of more later and come back.

LOL, Annie, I came back later but could not find any photos of purple or black plants. I do have 'Bowles Black' viola pix from last spring, and a Snake's Head Iris. Can't think of any really dark plants that are here right now, except for the Castor Bean plants and I've already displayed them. Twice. LOL.

I had an old October garden magazine that featured dark plants. I must have tossed it. Later on, Oakleaf Hydrangea leaves will turn maroon, but not yet.

Annie I have a couple of plants with dark foliage, Sedums Vera Jamison and Purple Emperor, also Ajuga Chocolate Chip but don't have pix of these guys. I do have a pix of my Black Mondo Grass Ebony Knight. I love this plant I take the berries off in the spring and just pop them in the garden here and there. Some of the seed produces green plants I usually weed most of these out but not all. Annette

WAIT! Did I read this wrong? You want ideas for black LEAVED plants?
Well, that puts it in a new light. The plants I listed above have black flowers. Here is another list of ones with dark foliage.

Actaea (Bugbane) from the 'Atropurpurea' group. Have lovely black foliage. I have one (name unknown) and it is much easier to grow than I first thought.
Ajuga- Bugleweed. There are several new cultivars out with neat dark foliage.
Eupatorium 'Chocolate'
Lychnis arkwrightii 'Orange Gnome'. Dark foliage huge orange flowers.
Ligularia. Lots of cultivars with black/maroonish leaves.

And I LOVE Black-leaved geraniums. I need more. I want to get 'Espresso', which has pink flowers and black leaves. I only have 'Elizabeth Anne', which has more brownish foliage and the small-statured 'Midnight Reiter'. I love MR! It has the DARKEST foliage and the BRIGHTEST neon blue flowers! Everyone must have this little gem! Its perfect for a small space.

I only have one pic, but there of my favorite black leaved plant so its ok. ;-)

Chyptotaenia japonica 'Atropurpurea'- Japanese Cow Parsley. Dark brown (looks somewhat black in early season) foliage that is shaped unusually. The stems are a red/brown color. It has obscure little flowers that arise on these stems that look like baren tree branches! Very cool plant!

Anything with black leaves or black flowers works for me.
I want to collect them to give to my daughter in SC. She and her hubby have a new house they had built last year (their first home after years of apartments) and she wants black and white plants and flowers for her yard.
All these are too cool!

I would love to have some seeds from your Black Mondo grass, Annette. That is just amazing. My Kate would go ape over those!

I've sent her black and white seeds I got in trades from folks on the seed forum. I sent her seeds from my Black Hollyhock. I'm going to send her a "pup" or two off my Black Magic EE next spring. Their house is painted a soft sage green with black shutters. It is a 2 story Colonial. The black plants with splashes of red (my idea) would be really smashing, don't you think? Maroon is also lovely mixed in with black leaves and flowers.

I bought a new Sedum this fall (summer close out sale). It has black stems and the seed heads turn a dark brown and then turn black. It is pretty cool looking.

I was thinking maybe a Black Japanese Pussy Willow would be cool in her yard. For an accent plant, I was thinking the white fragrant flowers of Jasmine by their patio. The leaves are a very dark green. She needs to erect some kind of trellis or something for shade on the west end of their patio and it is right outside their dining room windows. The jasmine would smell good all summer coming in the windows and would make great shade fairly fast. I bought a hardy jasmine and will root her some of that for her patio garden. A Gardenia shrub would be nice and a climbing white rose, too.

Annie, I just went out and looked, there are a few berries there and you are welcome to the seed, the birds or something have been feasting as there was a lot more seed there last week. I did a quick look for info on planting this seed, apparently they don't store well and should be planted as soon as possible in the spring, slow to germinate so be patient. I just poked the berries in the ground and forgot about them. I don't see why they couldn't be winter sown, send me an email with your snail mail addy.

Plectranthus is really a tender perennial. It overwinters inside quite easily. I believe the plant in the picture is Mona Lavender not Lady Lavender.

Betsy -- it wasn't labeled and the lady at the nursery called it Lady Lavender after much thought! Thanks for the correction. I'll see if I can overwinter it here.

I don't have many black plants but I hope to get some for next year. This is one of my favorites that I bought in the spring - Thalictrum (black stockings). The stems are black hence the name. A fun plant that your daughter may enjoy - drought tolerant. Nikki
