Comments (5)If the branch is dead the plant will not channel energy into it. If it's dead it's dead. I believe you should wait because limbs that appear dead may come back. I had some dead looking branch tips that did that this spring. I'm in zone 10 and probably at least a month ahead of you. I just snipped a couple of dead ones off this week. Either way though...it's not a huge deal. Trees often die back to the ground up north and come back from the roots in spring. I cut one of my newer mission trees off at the ground three months ago with the intentions of removing it. It is now a very healthy looking bush, 18 inches high and growing by the day, and will most likely have a pretty decent crop of figs on it this year. My point is that...whatever you do...leave the pruning for later, prune it now...or even cut it to the ground...which ever you do the tree will most probably come back just fine and bear fruit this year. Fig trees in the wild get some die back all the time, and they manage to survive. So the choice is yours. Take care........Dave...See Morehow can you tell if your fig tree is dead or alive?
Comments (12)I had a question, it’s helpful to read the threads above. My fig was planted this winter. It is about 5 feet tall. It immediately grew leaves all over the tree this spring and they suddenly, turned yellow and all started to fall off. I did research and found it is most likely rust. I took away all the leaves and then took away a large amount of dirt from the tree as it is clay soil and holding a lot of moisture. I put a bunch of proper dirt in place of the clay dirt. A couple questions!! Will it regrow leaves and how long should it take? I will try to see if the tree has green under the surface (seen as suggestion above), but I’m not sure what to do for it and what to expect....See MoreHow many figs do your container fig trees produce?
Comments (10)Thisisme in my opinion is very correct in saying it depends on conatianer size, fertilizer used, tree size in container. Some of my larger ones are grown in i would say 30 gallon containers i come to realize, i say this because i was at Menards yesterday and saw what was advertised as 23 gallon containers for 5.98 in black and blue color almost bought a few , there the kind with the rope handles but im thinking of keeping my new plants in smaller ones for space in garage. Soory to vear off here. Anyhoot, when i kept count 2 years back i had 150 from el.sals hardy chiago was near 100 and my unknown was at 30 figs and 75% never ripened because its a late riper in my climate. Since then i stopped counting. This year bad year cause of bad weather. Martin...See Morechills71
