What's your favorite squirrel recipe?

I just put a running shelf down one side of my wood fence to get potted plants off the ground so I can take better care of my lawn. Now I have squirrels that routinely run across the top of my fence jumping down onto the shelf and rooting around in the pots looking for food.

Any friendly and save methods to discourage them? I have some Christmas palm and Alexander palm seed starts and I'm afraid they'll kill them to get the seeds.

Those sorry little creatures wreak havoc on my fruit trees and plants...They have recently dug up black sapote and canistel seedlings I had started in pots - I feel your pain. The most effective action is rat poison but I can't bring myself to put it out (yet). Another option I have found is spraying "Deer off" on the potted plants or starter pots and it seems to keep them at bay - for a while anyway...

Lol, you are too funny Brian! Maybe get a dog? I noticed that the muskovies, the rats and the squirrels take a vacation from my yard when my son's dog is visiting. She likes to sneak up on them and see how fast they can run / fly away!

BERBER CHICKEN AND TOMATO SALAD (source: "The Grains Cookbook" by Bert Greene) A recipe from Morocco. 1 c. bulgur 1 c. chopped, seeded, peeled tomatoes (about 2 medium) 2 c. boneless skinless cooked chicken pieces 3 T. chopped fresh basil 1 t. chopped fresh mint 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/3 c. olive oil 3 T. red wine vinegar salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste chopped fresh parsley, for garnish 1. Cook the bulgur in a large pot of boiling salted water until tender, 20-25 minutes. Drain, and set aside to cool. 2. In a large bowl, combine the cooled bulgur, tomatoes, chicken, basil, mint, and garlic. Lightly toss, then add the oil, vinegar, and salt and pepper. Sprinkle with parsley. Serves 4-6. BULGUR\-STUFFED TOMATOES (source: "The Grains Cookbook" by Bert Greene) 4 ripe medium tomatoes 1/4 c. strong homemade chicken stock 2 T. olive oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 lg. clove garlic, minced 1 t. sugar 1/2 c. bulgur 1 t. chopped fresh basil, or 1/2 t. dried 1/2 t. chopped fresh thyme, or 1/4 t. dried 1/2 t. salt 1/4 t. freshly ground black pepper 1/8 t. hot pepper sauce 2 T. freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1\. Slice the top off the tomatoes and scoop out the interiors with a spoon, leaving about 1/4\-inch thick walls. Turn the scooped\-out tomatoes upside down on paper towels to drain. Place the tomato pulp and seeds in the container of a food processor or blender, and process until smooth. You should have about 1\-1/4 cups liquid. Add enough chicken stock to make 1\-1/2 cups total liquid. 2\. Heat the oil in a medium\-size saucepan over medium\-low heat. Add the onion; cook 1 minute. Add the garlic; cook 3 minutes longer. This one is always a huge hit when we go boating. Travels well, very tasty , substantial and a bit different. Don't let the ingredients list put you off it really is very easy to make. Real N'awlins Muffuletta (Weed) 1 cup pimento-stuffed green olives crushed 1/2 Cup drained kalamata olives crushed 2 Clove garlic minced 1/4 Cup roughly chopped pickled cauliflower florets 2 Tbl drained capers 1 Tbl chopped celery 1 Tbl chopped carrot 1/2 Cup pepperoncini drained 1/4 Cup marinated cocktail onions 1/2 Tsp celery seed 1 Tsp dried oregano 1 Tsp dried basil 3/4 Tsp ground black pepper 1/4 Cup red wine vinegar 1/2 Cup olive oil 1/4 Cup canola oil 2 (1 pound) loaves Italian bread 8 ounces thinly sliced Genoa salami 8 ounces thinly sliced cooked ham 8 ounces sliced mortadella orcappicola 8 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese 8 ounces sliced provolone cheese Directions 1. These are really good if you want something chocolate. Mocha Truffle Cookies 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate pieces 1 tablespoon instant coffee crystals 3/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 beaten eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup semisweet chocolate pieces In a large saucepan melt butter and the 1/2 cup chocolate pieces over low heat. Remove from heat. Stir in coffee crystals; cool 5 minutes. Stir in sugars, eggs, and vanilla. In a medium mixing bowl combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir into coffee mixture. Stir in the 1 cup chocolate pieces. Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake in a 350 degree F oven 10 minutes. Let cool 1 minute before removing from sheet. Makes 30 cookies.

I was married for 15 years before my daughter was born. Once I became a mother, I tried to be a "super mom" and do everything I thought a mom should do. That included baking cookies. Odd because I didn't raise her eating a lot of sweets, and she wasn't (and still isn't) big on eating sugar. But, I liked homemade cookies and like everything else I do (all or nothing), I took to it in a BIG way. I had never liked store bought cookies particularly, and when baking, if the recipe called for margarine, instead of butter, then I wouldn't even try the recipe because I felt like their standards didn't measure up to mine. Cookie snob. ;) I baked cookies and if they were really good, I added them to my permanent recipe files. I used to make cookie platters for my friends and neighbors at Christmas. Since I live in a super humid climate, and didn't have central heat, which might have helped take the humidity out of the house....always lived in very old houses...candy recipes could be difficult. But divinity seemed like it belonged at Christmas, but when I made it, it was more apt to be like marshmallow whip. This recipe is a meringue type cookie, but a little bit like divinity. (I said "a little bit"). I got it in one of those Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Cookie magazines that come out this time of year. Somehow or another, I lost the recipe, and I couldn't remember which magazine it was in, and over the years, some of the magazines had been tossed when I cleaned house. I searched for it on line for a long time, and decided I'd finally have to go on line and try to find the magazine, and buy it, but not knowing what year, I still couldn't be sure. One day I searched for it, and it came up! I am sure this is much to do about very little to most people, but I was really happy to find it again. Black Walnut Drops (I find black walnuts at Kroger.) 2 egg whites 2/3 c. sugar 1 c. finely chopped black walnuts 2 tbsp. flour In a small mixer bowl beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, beating until stiff. Toss the black walnuts with flour; fold into egg whites. Drop the meringue by rounded teaspoons onto prepared cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 325 degrees until edges start to brown.

I put a tray with sunflower seeds on the ground near the fence (on my side). I have a forest behind my backyard so to get rid of ALL squirrels is impossible. I can only to divert their attention. It looks like it works - they go straight to the seeds and leave bird feeder alone. Jays loves these seeds too.

Personally, I don't like squirrels, but my Jack Russell Terrier "Sis" has several ways she enjoys them.

Fresh: Grab, shake well, crunch down and enjoy!

Seasoned: Dig shallow hole under shed. Gently lay squirrel in hole, cover delicately with light layer of soil. Go back to check on it daily. When aroma is right, dig up partially, and eat the head. Save the rest for later. After 2-3 more days of ripening, remove squrrel from soil, dine in comfort on front door mat, leaving intestinal tract and cute, fluffy tail as "gifts" for two legged inhabitants who she lets live here.

She has made great progress at reducing the population!

Can I borrow Sis for a couple weeks? I could let her loose in the attic after she clears the yard - there are enough squirrels up there to last her for a couple extra weeks.

My Shelties are enthusiastic but not too effective. I keep telling them that herding the squirrels onto the roof is NOT what I want them to do, but they look so proud once they have them all lined up on the eaves that I can't yell at them.

YUM! my favorite squirrel recipe is to dredge them (skinned, of course!) in seasoned flour, brown 'em in a big old cast iron skillet then finish cooking them in good, thick gravy. Serve over 'scratch biscuits! cora

I foolishly move to Pennsylvania with my first husband years ago.

We were so poor that the old men I work with at a wholesale nursery felt sorry for us . They gave me a huge bag of frozen squirrel that they had shot while hunting.

I would put about 6 of those bad boys in my crock pot cook ups some rice .......

While I've never tried Rack o'Squirrel, Squirrel a la King or Squirrel Kabobs, I have lived in the Carolinas at one time. I have been told they are quite tasty and like most things, taste a lot like chicken.

I kinda like squirrels and think they are cute. I have one that will eat sunflower seeds out of my hand.

People spend $5 a day on coffee at Starbucks. I figure, I can buy a large bag of sunflower seeds or peanuts for cheap entertainment.

But, if you can attract some hawks to your yard, you won't have ANY more squirrel issues.

I've been having the same problem with squirrels recently - we had a bumper crop of acorns this fall and I think they're trying to find all the ones that they buried!

I've had good luck sprinkling cayenne pepper on top of the soil in my pots. I bought a huge container of the pepper at Sam's and it's about half gone already! I refresh the pepper after a major rain or when I notice fresh digging in my pots.

Saintpfla, we have hawks in our trees every day. I've not seen any squirrels act afraid of them. I've seen hawks hit doves and mockingbirds in midflight, and some eating snakes, but the darn tree rats act as if the whole world is their buffet.

I used to think they were cute. My Mom had 2 pet squirrels, that eventually destroyed her screened-in patio. They want to eat every minute, unless they are busy making more squirrels. Feeding them makes them reproduce even more, as they raise more babies when food is plentiful.

My neighbors feed them peanuts. I find peanuts in my potted plants, and popping up all over the yard. The squirrels are terrible thieves of freshly planted seeds. I had to make wire cages over my pea and bean seeds. They chew right through plastic mesh/fencing.

I had them strip 11 Apple trees in 2 days. They would take a bite, drop the apple, and go get more. Broke lots of branches. Lost my Peach crops too, to the &#***s!

Got a high-powered pellet gun, and my little rescue dog. Between us we have reduced the population to the point of comfort. I won't use poison. An accurate shot means an instant death. Poison is slow and painful, plus deadly to dogs as well.

Relocating is a bad idea. At least 9 out of 10 squirrels we have disposed of have been males. Relocating them into another colony means a slow miserable death. They are *very* territorial. PBC Animal Care cannot be bothered with picking up trapped wildlife, I'm amazed that St. Lucie County does so. Katkin, you are fortunate that they respond! I suspect that they euthanise them, though, and that the "relocation" is just a story. No one wants more squirrels.

Please please don't put rat poison out in the open environment. Any squirrel that eats the rat poison will then become toxic. Any animal that then eats that squirrel (like your beloved dog) will then have a fairly decent risk of being poisoned secondarily by the rat poison, which stays in the squirrel's body. Dogs have died from eating poisoned rats and squirrels.

I don't condone the killing of squirrels for "sport", even though they are a huge nuisance in my yard too because I live in the woods and we have 1000's. But, the photo of the lady with the squirrel cooker isn't far off the mark, LOL. My grandfather was born in 1905 into a family that had been dirt poor all their lives. He learned to hunt squirrels for food in the Depression. Even after he was married and had a good job and money, he still hunted squirrels, and my grandmother fried them like chicken.

When I lived in Galveston TX in the 1980's I worked in a big hospital ICU. We used to have potluck dinners a lot at the holidays. One of the ladies was a Louisiana Cajun and her specialty was Baked Squirrel with Dirty Rice.

I'm not saying start shooting and eating squirrels, LOL. I am just saying, if you feel it necessary to shoot them, at least give them to someone who might actually eat them so their lives are not wasted.

I had a neighbor once, years ago, in the North Woods, who had a crock sitting by the doorway of his house. In it was pickled squirrel. His kids would eat some as an afterschool snack. No, I never tried it, thanks. And having witnessed this family I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone doing this!

I don't know, they swear they relocate them. They have told me the ferral cats they do put down. There is a lot of open land to drop them off. I figure there is a chance for them, as Ralph would shoot them as well. He hates squirrels. He thinks of them as a furry tailed rat.

Seems to me that is all backwards. The feral cats should be trapped then spay/neuter and then relocated to areas that have lots of squirrels ;-)

This is an ongoing problem, isn't it? With no easy solutions. We have way too many squirrels in our yard, too, and I agree, they don't seem worried about the hawks in the slightest. BUT, I have finally (KNOCK WOOD, dare I even say this outloud?) found baffles that work. I now have three of my seven feeders set up and the squirrels have not figured out how to get the food yet! I'm amazed!

I have actually tasted squirrel "perloo" at a reenactor's gathering. (Shot by long rifles, skinned up and cooked with rice, peas, onions and the like). It wasn't bad, but I only had a small bit of squirrel in the helping I tasted. However this was in North Carolina. So many of the squirrels I see down here are infested with bot flies and other parasites that I would be afraid to eat them, I think. And anyway, unless I wanted squirrel something-or-other for dinner every night of the week, I'd probably not make a dent in the population.

*sigh* The price you pay for having beautiful big trees around.

Secretly...don't tell anyone I said this...I admire the clever little things. But they sure are a nuisance!

I feed my squirrels and volunteer at the feral cat rescue...Love watching squirrels eat and have lost one orchid to them - with 500, it did not hurt at all :)
My sister in law does wildlife rescue and saves lots of baby squirrels every year

Well, you know I'M with you on the feral cat rescue program, Olya. We've talked about that before. And as I say, I admire squirrels for their tenacity and their unrelenting cleverness. It's just that they can be soooo annoying when they damage stuff. For me, there's not an easy solution. I keep them outta my birdfeeders the best way I can, but I have been known to give them their own dried corn feeding station from time to time. Right now, they are doing quite well without my help.

They can pretty annoying, I agree, Marcia :) Smart creatures - my Sis-in-law is fascinated with squirrels, has lots of books on them :) I, personally, have a thing for possums.
I just have extreme tolerance for most living things - I do understand why people do not like squirrels though :):)

Put me in the haters camp. They are literally eating away my very large seagrape making it unsafe. They strip the new cambien layer. They come into the yard via the power line. I'm thinking of getting a super soaker.

I loved them too and always provided food for them. I still think they are cute and athletic and very clever. But once they invaded my attic they lost a lot of their charm. They've chewed their way into all my Christmas decoration boxes and everything else stored in the attic. I could bag and sell Skwerl Poo if I could think of a good way to market it. I'm on the 3rd extermination effort and I no longer love them.

I will preface this by saying that my hunting days are over. Having lived here all my life and being a forth-generation Floridian I will admit I have eaten squirrel and I can tell you it's not very tender! So, without further ado, and in the interest of adding a little humor to this posting, here's my favorite squirrel recipe:

Cajun Squirrel

- squirrels,cut into serving pieces, amount depends upon how many you can eat
- olive oil
- 1 large onion
- 1 large green bell pepper
- 2 cloves garlic
- Cajun spice (Tony Chachere's recommended)
- 2 tbsp Tabasco sauce
- 4 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp Gumbo File seasoning
- cooked rice

In a deep pot or dutch oven, heat some olive oil.

Season the squirrel on all sides with the Cajun seasoning. Add to the hot oil and turn to brown on all sides. Continue to cook until done.

Place the onion, bell pepper and garlic in a blender. Cover with water and chop. Add to the pot when squirrel is done.

Sprinkle the added vegetables with Cajun seasoning.

Add the Tabasco sauce, ketchup and the Gumbo File. Stir to mix well.

Serve over the cooked rice.

BTW, it NEVER tastes like chicken! ;-)

I actually think they are cute, it's DH that hates them. And I admire them for their cleveness. The problem is we are over run by them. There is no natural preditor around here any more. The damage they do like in Kate's situation is awful and they bring fleas and ticks into the yard that my dog gets. I also hate that they take one bite out of my mangoes and other fruit, then leave it, making it useles for me.

DC, I like the way you think, however if the cats aren't giving yearly shots they harbor diseases like feline luke and die a miserable death. Plus run the risk of infecting other cats.

There really is no need to feed squirels as there is no problem with them getting food on there own. No lasting frost and snow on the ground. Once you feed them, you make them lazy and they look to be feed. My neighbor had them tear the screen on the lanai to get to the birdseed. And they will seek any warm shelter rather then build a nest.

I love animals and try to do what is right, but I can't have my property destroyed either. There is no easy solution, so for now I'll trap them.

Well... As much as I hate to say it, my squirrels serve a useful purpose. They love the ripe Queen Palm seeds - chew them rascals down to the heart and kill 'em before they burrow under the mulch and sprout.

Fortunately, they leave everything else alone... for now.

However, to answer your question: as you can see, most of the recipes call for crock pot or Dutch Oven cooking. I ate squirrel several times at campsites in New Hampshire in the early 70s. They guys who cooked them, always batter-dipped nugget size pieces and deep-fried them. No, they don't taste like chicken, but neither did the snake and possum they cooked as well.

Oh yes, they love queen palms, one loved mine so much it ate the heart out of it and killed it. Cost me a couple of hundred to take it down. Plus damage to all the plants around it. :o(

I think they are cute and clever but such a pest!

I have a small staghorn fern that I have been trying to nurture into a large one. My shady spot in the yard is right where the squirrels live (under a large oak). They keep digging out the spagnum(spelling?) moss that I potted it with and leave it esposed. Everytime I add more they take away more! I guess I will have to put netting over it and hope for the best.

Also, my peach trees are fruiting for the first time and I have lots of baby peaches. I have found one with a hole in it already. I wonder who could have done that??? :)

Gabriele - take the moss off the Staghorn, it doesn't need it. Just tie it onto a tree with some jute twine and it'll attach and grow nicely.

Gabriele, you won't get to enjoy a single Peach, with squirrels around. They will strip your tree. They break branches off, take a bite from each fruit, then drop them.

If you want to actually get a harvest, you will need to build a strong wire cage around/over the tree, completely covering it. Or, start shooting the tree rats with a pellet gun. Pellet guns are not "firearms" and are allowed in most areas. BB guns are not effective against these pests.

Wow, great responses, thanks for all the ideas. I did find some pepper wax spray that I have sprayed on my fence and pots. It is expensive, so if it works, I'll make my own. Big red pepper from Sams and I can come up with a waxy spray.

Being from Georgia, I have eaten squirrel (Marcia, we called it squirrel perlo as well, but it was just squirrel and rice, no veggies).

I had no idea this thread would get so many responses, thanks for the humor.

Brian, good luck with your pepper stuff! I tried sprinkling cayenne pepper on my birdseed to keep squirrels off the tray. Didn't slow them down ONE bit. They ate everything on the tray, as usual. I put down so much of it you could barely see the seed, and still they dug through it. I have some SPICE-LOVIN' squirrels in my yard, I reckon. But your product might be hotter or stickier or something else that will work. Hope so!

This is a story I told a while back, so mayby you heard it.
A long long time ago we had squirrels in our attic. Every one told me they would chew the elec. wires and cause a fire. So they had to go. DH found the opening in the roof overhang and when they came out one morning he blocked it up with screen. As he was putting in the last staple a little head peeked over the edge of the roof. When he left it went to the patch and bumped its head against it several times. Then the second squirrel appeared and they just stared at the patched hole. I felt so bad and he asked me if I wanted him to remove the patch. I told him no, I was afraid they would indeed chew on the wires. That night I was looking trough a magazine I believe (Womens Day), and I came across an ad for a sampler (a embroidered message) It had two squirrels on the top and the message was "Blessed is the Home that Shares it's Shelter". I felt so guilty after that. The hard part is that they mate for life and my neighbor in back caught one of them in a have a heart trap and that was the end of that family. I personally enjoy watching them and decided I can't have everything my way and choose to co-exist.

Hey all,
I too have wimpy hawks that are more interested in making noise than catching the Squirrels that are eating my ripe strawberries...thus...

The Havahart is out! I am considering calling the guy at Thunderhawk Big Cat rescue who lives at the end of the street and asking for some Tiger Poo. It definitely worked to scare away the panthers and bobcats that were after the chickens!

Owls and raptors eat mice and squirrels that eat them and it poisons them!

Thanks for the information. I am new to growing staghorn ferns and can use any advise. However the large tree that it's hanging under is our neighbors, just on the other side of the fence. We planted some live oaks a few years ago but they are too small to attach the fern to, for now. I will try it when they are bigger. Thanks!
