Why is that all these destructive hurricanes get such beautiful names? Who came up with such idea?

No, I don't think there is anything to this global warming talk. JMHO. DH read in his IBD paper this morning:

Environment: As tropical storm Noel heads for the U.S., we recall how we were warned that global warming would increase the number and power of hurricanes. Yet the 2007 season is the mildest in 30 years.

The North Atlantic hurricane season is 29% below normal, the Northern Hemisphere 33% below normal. The Western Pacific is off 27% while the Eastern Pacific is 60% behind its typical rate of activity.

We concede that next year might be the worst hurricane season on record. But it's just as likely to be a repeat of this year. No one can reasonably predict what the storm count and intensity will be in 2008.

What we can expect is the alarmists' storm of nonsense to keep coming. They won't give up on global warming until they've found a new calamity they can use to scare everyone."

DH has lived here since 1957, I have lived here since 1960. We, together, have lived in our cottage since 1973. We had one or two hurricanes in our area before Frances and Jeanne in 2004, and Wilma in 2005. Frances and Jeanne were horrible, but Wilma was the worst. I was totally freaked and crying. I was so relieved when the winds started fading off. Then we got to work cleaning up, cutting up downed trees, rebuilding a smashed small building, etc. We were without power for 13 days and learned to 'camp out'.

Then the 'fear-mongers' started their propaganda about how the next 40 years were going to be absolutely awful with horrible hurricanes. I always had a fear of hurricanes with the start of each season, but after Wilma I had a huge dose of fear. Last year was very quiet and this year even quieter. I do not want to live my life in fear. Almost all of what we worry about never happens. I want to relax and enjoy the beauty of each day. We rarely listen to or watch the news. It is full of doomsday stuff, death, disease and mayhem. Who needs that? We now have a generator and a chain saw. We have a butane gas camping stove. We are going with the flow living each day as best we can.

I just fixed us a cup of tea served with two double chocolate oatmeal cookies. : -) Therapy for a dreary day.

I do hope Noel runs out of steam if he decides to head your way, We are very fortunate up here, although we've had some very destructive high winds in recent years.
Our winters are unpredictable, some no snow at all and quite mild, one year either 65 or 66 huge snowfalls and the temperature dropped to Zero F. A lot will say you think that's cold... well up here on the coast that's damn cold, chills you to the bone.
Here's hoping your hurricane season doesn't amount to much and everyone gets safely through it.

Annette ~ Zero degrees would be 'dang' cold to this barefoot flowerlady. : -) We hardly get cold temps. When it gets down to 50 it's cold and if it does it doesn't last long. We only have a month to go before hurricane season ends. Hopefully, nothing develops in that time.

I add my wishes for uneventful weather in your neck of the woods...but we could use the rain. We had the big one 2 weeks ago and then a sprinkle and that was that. None in the forecast. Atl. where my son is has less than 60 days of water....but the corps says they have 280....who knows. It all seems like propaganda. Caroline

Mora ~ I was wondering about some of you up in the far north. I've read that NS is going to get it with gusting strong winds and lots of rain. Let's hope Noel fizzles out before reaching you.

Cousin Kathy ~ thanks. We have been staying dry indoors. Lots of gusting wind so that my wind chimes have been making music all day and into the night for the past 3 days or so.

I keep checking AccuWeather online and they say we should have more strong winds and heavy rains this afternoon and tonight as Noel passes by about 100 miles or so east of us. Right now it is windy and we've had sunshine, but no rain so far today.

Last night I read the thread to our Calif. friends, and my thread on Noel seems so insignificant in comparison. My heart goes out to all who have lost their homes by these horrible fires, and to ones who have lost their homes due to other natural catastrophes. No one wants to lose their home, their sense of identity, their space, their haven that they have created here in this time. Loss of life is worse and I pray for those who have lost family and friends also.

This forum is such a dear bunch who cares about one another. Thank you for being here for me and for all of us when we need a word of cheer, encouragement, etc.

Thanks for your good thoughts, the storm should hit mid-afternoon and continue through Sunday morning with hurricane force winds. My concern is losing power as we really rely on our sump pump when it rains.
Lunenburg is on the coast with a fairly well protected harbour and our little cottage has been keeping her people safe since the late 1700's. Trees are always a worry but getting the axe out now is not an option. I'll keep you posted, Martha

Martha, not envying you at all, we've had a couple of nasty wind storms in our neck of the woods, trees crashing down on houses, huge old growth firs snapping in half. Scary stuff.

Martha ~ Power going out is not good, especially for any length of time. Our power was out for 13 days after Wilma hit our area, and we had to do some adjusting of our daily lives that is for sure. There is so much of our life that depends on electricity. Doing without made us appreciate the every day little things we take for granted. I do hope and pray you don't lose your power and if you do, not for long, and that you have no damage to your homes.
