All my baby plants are dying

Hello all my friends. Happy New Year. I miss you guys/gals and I am kind of back... haven't catching up all the forum yet...

After spent much time busy working and traveling... crisis not end completely but is under control... I finally, couldn't stand the stress, and the -20c cold weather. I flight down to Sarasota to a friend of mine yacht for a overdue vocation. Went out to the open ocean, did some fishing, watching boats racing... Boy, that is so nice... love the blue water, the ocean breeze, ,quietness of surroundings, and sense of freedom. Just fly back yesterday,and I brought the Fl weather back with me... It is in 60s here in Chicago!!! unbelievable. My trees are going to have hormonal disorder!

Anyway, vocation is nice, my plants are dead or dying at home....:(
My sweet Olive only have 5 leaves left, TG, these are 5 green leaves, very precious! My Citrus are half dead, tree Jasmines are in between condition, orchids seem OK, But most of the my babies show sign of unhappiness... OM, what did I do? I am guilty of left them home. I hope the weather warm up and I can move them of soon... They love the gentle breeze and open sky...

I've been wondering where you've been! Glad you're back.
So sorry to hear about your plants but at least you're taking care of yourself by going on a much needed vacation.
We can always buy more plants, right? ;)
Your trip sounds amazing.
Can't wait for summer to return!

Awww, seriously sorry to hear about your plants though. You never did say what the problem was though. Got too dry? Hope a nice gulp of water brings at least some of them back to life if possible!!

I grow Jalapeno, Chile Grande, Cubanelle, Hungarian Yellow Wax, New Mex Sunrise, Colossal, California Wonder, Diamond, Golden California Wonder, Orange Sun, and Purple Beauty. In separate containers on a Deck. When my peppers start looking like the ones in the above photos it's because I haven't watered them enough. They all seem to require more water during periods of long, hot, days Regardless of variety. When watered and moved into the shade for a day they come right back. I'm not saying they can't show similar symptoms due to over watering, It's just that mine always wilt pretty much in unison With all varieties showing similar symptoms within hours of each other. ~Ken~

Hi, very sorry to hear what's happening, but you gave no information at all to work from. However, yellowing usually means you're watering too often, and that the soil you're using is made up of particles too small to allow water to run through quickly and should be changed to something with very little peat in it (most 'potting' soil is mostly peat and holds water at the roots way too long). So, you need to get hold of some soil (ask at a garden centre - don't use topsoil from the garden.. full of unwanted stuff) with coarser particles AND add a lot of perlite and/or small aquarium gravel so water just runs through quickly. NEVER let the pots sit in any drain water because roots will rot, but as humidity is important (and spraying is a waste of time) DO add lots of large pebbles to a wide tray of water under the pots, but keep the water below the level of the pebbles (and pot). The only other possibility is that you have spider mites, but the leaves would usually become crispy, not soggy. I'm sure watering too often and the bad soil mix is your problem. Also, try to give plants as much light as possible for as many hours a day as possible - the less light they have, the less often you need to water (but do it well when you do it once you're using a fast draining mix).

I'm not sure where to begin here........:-) 1) Foliar 'feeding' is extremely inefficient. Plants absorb the bulk of their nutrients via their roots. I doubt molasses sprayed on foliage provides any significant nutrient benefit as any natural/organic product has to be digested/assimilated by soil organisms before it becomes converted to a plant accessible form (a soluble salt, just as any other synthetic fertilizer presents). 2) Molasses can be a microorganism stimulant but not much in the way of a fertilizer. 3) Epsom salts is only of benefit if you have a magnesium deficiency, otherwise it does nothing for plants - it doesn't control pests; it doesn't control diseases; it doesn't make your plants any healthier or grow bigger and better. 4) We already addressed foliar feeding so spraying milk on your plants is not particularly helpful.........unless you have certain fungal issues. Milk contains lactic acid which alters the surface pH of plant foliage so that it is not hospitable to the development of powdery mildew spores. It also has anitbacterial properties that can be beneficial. But providing calcium just by spraying??? Nope!! Plants cannot process materials like molasses and milk in the same way that humans or other mammals can. If you poured the milk on the ground around the plant you might get some nutrient benefit but there are far more inexpensive methods to accomplish the same thing. 5) Neem oil is NOT a fertilizer!! It is an organic or natural pesticide but it has NO nutrient value. Its mode of action as a pesticide is to disrupt hormones which can have numerous implications - inability to mate or lay eggs, inability of insect larvae to moult or metamorphize, disruption of the digestive system. And it can smother soft bodied insects and act as repellant against some insect pests (grasshoppers and caterpillars in particular). It also has fungicidal properties but is of no value as a fertilizer. 6. The last two statements don't even make sense - does potassium contain blackstrap molasses and other nutrients and minerals?? Or is it the other way around?? In either case, neither is very accurate. Potassium is just potassium and molasses is pretty darn low on the plant nutrient scale, only providing 8% K, 12% Mg, 4% Fe and 4% Ca. Many other far less expensive and much better and broader sources of plant nutrients available with other organics. This is the Internet and all sorts of dubious sources publish all manner of nonsense that gets passed around and accepted for fact but before you repeat all that hokum it makes sense to research where it is coming from. Anecdotal reporting has no basis in science and is really not valid, although it can make for some entertaining reading. Look instead to science based websites - the extension service .edu websites or published scientific papers are a great place to start.

Pictures are also helpful for us in figuring out what might be occurring with your plants. Don't give up. Gardening is complex but also simple; if you are persistent you will get something to harvest each year, even if it is different. The most likely issue with what you described is "hardening off," which is not getting the plants used to the conditions outdoors before moving them.

OG, I'm so glad you're back. We'd all started questioning where you'd disappeared to.

I thought maybe you'd decided you didn't like plants anymore and you were changing the decor at home to a green-free space.

Well, I was thinking that might be the direction I would go in soon if the spider mites and mealy bugs don't leave my plants alone...

yes (the mealy bugs have made an appearance on my tahitian gardenia this weekend) I caught about 12 of them (babies still) and smushed them in a tissue. Since then, I've been checking the leaves of my plants in that room two or three times a day. (what's that white speck?!! scrape it off and destroy... and yes, it could be dust but I'm not taking any chances)

I'm really sorry to hear about your poor plants - I really hope you got home in time to bring them back.

Hi, Robert, Purple, Rosey. this is the "water plants" that I dream of. No leaves, bugs. It blooms every time give it some fuel... Feed it with the green. I really need to win a lottery.

Yeah, I still love plants I have... Keep spending more buy more... The circle never ends.

Here you were livig leveda, living it up, and on the ocean and all this time I thought you got mad at my Mom for what she did for you, sending you that package..lol
She was like, "Did I offend her with making those for her"..lol
I said NO, she is probably keeping warm some other way.lol
I told here she would probably be around again soon. Olympia is addicted to this forum. Once she starts feeling withdrawel, she'll be back.
By the way, you just can't stay away from sin..Hahahha

I hope you can get tham back to health, and if not, there is always more from where they came from.
As for Orchids, they are a tough species I tell you, thank God. Those are not cheal to replace!

So nice to see you back but I am sorry to hear about your plants. They will come back, or like mike mentioned, there are plenty to go around between us all to get you back up and growing!

That picture of the yachts and the palms looks soooo inviting! All we need is a rum runner on the back deck and then " let the party begin". Of course we need a few fragrant blooms around for the fragrance and then the perfect sunsets....

Now you have me dreaming....
