finally got some new pix.. comparing last year to this year .... per the previous posting ....

do you think a couple tablespoons of osmocote would be why they didn't yellow up as per last year .... yeah .. i know... do as i say not as i do ... i juiced them because i have a big garden show in 2009 ....what more can i say ... perhaps, as someone suggested, they are doing too well to turn yellow ... agree??? disagree???

Feeding could certainly be a factor, but I'm still leaning toward weather. I know in your other post you mentioned similar weather this year compared to last but, as I recall, last year we had heavy snow on Dec 1 followed by a week or so when temps neared 0F (-17C) at night. Since your weather pretty much echoes mine here near Milwaukee, and we haven't been nearly that cold yet, it could be just too warm still.

I have a similar problem with my zucchini and cucumbers. My zucchini have gotten white spots on the leaves and some of them had died. I kept getting the fruit and as a new gardener, I didn't worry about it. After a week or two I noticed that most of the branches were dying and when I lifted some, the stem broke just above the ground. It was rotted through. All three of my plants have died and I removed them all from the garden. We have had a wet summer and I may have over watered them, though my soil drains pretty well. Next, my neighbor's cucumbers (which are separated from my garden by a link fence) have all withered and died. I am now noticing spots on my cucumber leaves, some have even become holes, and the vines are beginning to wither. Is there anything I can do to prevent further damage or what can I do to prevent this problem next year? Should I spray milk on them?

I have a golden delicious which is a good pollinator but the warm up last year and this year caused the buds to swell and then it was followed by an artic blast with the addition of high winds which killed the flower buds. There were now flowers on the fuji last year and I think the same thing has happened this year. I just read that the cherry blossoms in Washington DC where damaged from the cold too. Local peach tree growers were trying to save some of the peaches by burning barrels of wood in the orchards like they sometimes do in Florida with the orange trees.

I experienced the problem last year. Five inflos and not a single flower. Have three inflos this year and the chutes were drying up and falling off just as last year. I have increased my watering over the past couple of weeks and they seem to be ready to bloom and have two additional inflos on other plants now. I was also using bloom booster, but stopped when I upped the watering. I'll keep you posted, but I think I was letting the soil get too dry before watering. Like KMS said above, mine have to be in pots so I stopped the bloom booster about four weeks ago.

what i noticed.. from the old pix... is the time stamp .... so perhaps i just need to be a bit more patient ... i think the new camera is going to be great.. but it appears.. i don't have a date stamp function ... bummer ...

but you are wrong [misguided] on the weather history ... last year.. EXTREMELY mild.. extremely late ... and then the shock of their lives... losing some growth that didn't properly harden off ..

this year... since mid Oct. .... just steadily downhill ...

i am thinking the minor nitro burst from the fert.. might be messing with them.. but apparently.. i will wait another month to see

PS: someday i hope to meet resin .. and trade a few puns over some good beer.. though i will bet a buck.. i wouldn't like what he drinks.. lol ... happy new year ... and if bboy and dave showed up .. they could argue about it all .. until we all got so infringed.. that we just went out and rolled around under the pines ... BUT I DIGRESS .. sorta ... rotflmbo .... and we would lose resin .... who would be looking for more pine cones for his collection ...... and bboy would be trying to explain to me how i am sunset 58 in michigan .... and dave would be ordering some gravel.. to work into my coniferscape ..... I WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR ... lol

Hey Ken,

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. I loved the bit of humor in your P.S. thread. A great way to start out the new year.

Actually I offered bboy the peace pipe but he didn't bite. I like the idea of the three of us meeting. Resin could provide the beer and his metric conversion book, bboy could provide a reference book and some photos of his garden. I would supply the gravel and bricks. You could provide your humor and 3-4 potted 1 gal. conifers for each of us.

All kidding aside I don't think the two table spoons of Osmocote put these conifers into a slide. Especially with the slow release factor it provides. I find that stuff in a lot of my conifer purchases.

The fact they didn't harden off properly, weather related, is probably the contributing factor. Hopefully they will bounce back this year. One thing for sure they did take a hit.

I think I would pass on the nitro burst and see what transpires this Spring.

Sorry, I don't bet bucks, they chew up too many conifers, and thrash them to pieces with their antlers . . . though they can be tasty if prepared right . . . now there's an idea, let's all have venison for new years dinner . . .

PS there's bound to be a date/time stamp somewhere on the camera, they all have it, it's just a matter of finding it in the controls (or reading the instruction booklet, if you can read Japanese!)
