I have about 20 sitting in pots waiting to be planted. I use the Miracle Grow potting mix with moisture control. My climate is a bit different "typically" from yours but I have mine sitting in full sun on the patio area. I just make sure they are given water every couple of days if we don't get rain. I think partial shade is fine. Most of mine have scapes coming up.

I don't feed mine till they go in the ground as I know these will only be in the pots for a couple of months. The potting mix has a some nutrients. If yours doesn't, then give them a bit of alfalfa tea or slow release fertilizer.

Just my thoughts. I had 7 pots of seedlings last year I left on my patio all winter. 3 pots with seedlings (5 in each) didn't make it. The others did just fine and I'm still behind in getting them in the ground.

This is what I recommend for our hot, humid climate. If these are newly acquired plants, pot them up and put them in the shade until they have time to grow new roots. Do not feed, and do not overwater. When I am potting them, I make sure to check the soil and discard any large chunks of wood, which Miracle Gro Potting Soil is notorious for having. These wood chunks when they compost in hot, humid weather will kill your babies in the pots.

Thanks so much for the info I am concerned about the heat, and will move them into some shade tomorrow. And I have another one coming this week. It will be hot here through at least September, and the shipper is a northern grower, so he couldn't ship in the late cooler fall.

Most of my daylilies grow in pots and they are out in the hot FL sunshine and are doing just fine I water every other day if we have no rain and I fertilize with Miracle Grow or Neptune's Harvest. If I have a weak or new plant I pot it up in shade for a few weeks and then move it to partial shade for another week or so then it goes out to full sun if it looks healthy enough.

And also, don't be too quick to toss a seemingly empty pot. This year, with new beds, I hope to be finally done with growing daylilies in pots, other than as a temporary measure or perhaps for a few attempts at ornamental arrangements in attractive pots. For now, I still have decisions to be made on the pots: e.g., do I bring all or only some to a garden center's recycling bin? If only some, how many to keep? Because I'm not sure how many pots I might want to keep, they're all over the place still -- including some that had contained plants that didn't make it, or so I thought. But then, only a few weeks ago, possibly even as late as June, a daylily began slowing growing in a pot that I'd thought contained only soil + what I'd assumed were the remains of the daylily that had died over the winter. I immediately placed the pot in a shady spot; in fact, because of the heat and this daylily's very slow rate of growth, it's still there.

kAY. I planted a bunch of them last AUGUST in upper 90's temperture.. and they was put right out in the sun, since I have no shade to speak of.The little bit of shade I have here has pots of hosta there, so the daylilies was put out on the sidewalk, and I watered them good with a root stimulator in the water,and have not lost a single one of them.in fact one of them bloomed in December.They are still in pots, and I water them every evening as long as its hot like this and no rain.NO fertilizer as the potting mix I used has fertilizer in it that feeds them for a few months.I always used EXPERT GARDENS POTTING SOIL from wal mart, until then, when I couldnt get any, as walmart had sold out of it, so had to go to HOme Depot to get some and I got MIRACLE GROW POTTING MIX there, and am still using that kind now.it also has fertilizer in it.
