Mine is on a slope where it trails down the slope. The canes are on the groud. It doesn't get disease.

I have mine planted in my front bed in front of my teddy bear magnolia tree. It is planted just like you would plant any rose bush. The canes just keep coming out of the middle and then arch down. The side canes are not as long and just touch the ground but I have to spray mine or it will blackspot, but its no problem. I find it really looks good this way. Kind of like an arching shrub. If you don't trim it back it will probably get pretty big.

It's really a graceful thing in the ground.
It HATES my alkaline conditions, but if you have conditions it likes, I'd
recommend it highly.

Patrick that's good to hear that I can just plant it straight in the ground if that's how it works out. Without worrying about the canes laying on the ground. Yours sounds really pretty.

You raise a good question. If I can grow it well in the ground or not. It certainly hated being in the new bed out front where pretty much all the other roses seemed comfortable. It only perked up when I put it in a pot. I do have other beds so I will probably end up with it in a larger pot or the back rose bed.

Kate, I would think that, if healthy, it would be a larger plant than
I personally would keep in a pot.
It would, I think, have to be quite a big pot.

Hey Jeri.

I was contemplating a half barrel. I have some half wine barrels that are cut not in half per se but longwise, if that makes sense. Pretty roomy really for a small rose. I know they fall apart after a while so that would be my only reservation in going that way.

MY only reservation is -- about the time a rose is really established
in a wine barrel, the barrel rots out.

Kitty Belendez warned us about this.
We were so smart we didn't listen, and had at LEAST a dozen roses in
half wine barrels.

Some of them, we eventually built beds around with stackable blocks
after carefully removing the rotted bottom and staves.
Some we had to transplant.
It was not fun.

I know you're right. Well sniff:( I love those barrels. I planted two roses in barrels this year but you know even with our snow up here ours last longer than yours do it seems. I suspect it is your proximity to the ocean that wears your barrels down so quickly.

Down here, at least, any wood that is in contact with the earth will
eventually rot out.
Kitty Belendez reported exactly the same problem -- and she lives at
the edge of the desert.
But as I said, we didn't take her word for it.
Noooo ... we had to try it ourselves and reinvent the wheel.

If you used a plastic container inside the wood barrel, that might be a
more long-term solution.

Is your plant own root?

I have an own root, mine grows great. I think it's in it's 3rd year.

I do remember the 1st year and how the canes were weird, I pruned them off and started shaping the bush. It's been fine ever since.
