Golliwog Pictures and Info + More DL Pics

For those of you who have asked questions about Golliwog, I will try to answer as best I can. It was planted in the fall of 2011 and did really well last year's bloom season for a brand new plant. The scapes were much shorter than registered, but I expected that. This year the scapes are up to 25" and that's good, only took that one year of growth to achieve the listed height. Here are some pictures:

This is a clump shot that shows the scapes. You can see how many it has. I think there may be about sixteen or so. Something I haven't done and should do is a bud count,

Another view-- I am on the opposite side. The buds may show up better in this shot.

This is a picture I took last year. You can see that the scapes are much shorter, but there are quite a few buds. I liked this pic because the flowers were backlit by the sun.

Now I am posting some multiple or clump shots of DLS that have been seen before, but I thought these were nice to look at.

Very pretty and very good shots of all of them! Bold tiger lookalike never has a bad shot, does it? Star child is just a beauty. Golliwog is an impressive plant! that's a lot of scapes! That photo from last year has a soft lovely color. You don't have a bad picture in the bunch. all are lovely.

Just wonderful Avedon. I loved looking at all of them and thanks for the info on Golliwog. Looks like you have a winner with that one. And I can see from your second pic your garden is booming with color.

Oh, how BEAUTIFUL everyone! I love daylilies and irises, so this is a lovely treat on a dreary gray morning. My daylilies and irises are still just doing foliage - no blooms for me for a month or so. Meanwhile, I can dream of 'Cordoba' and 'Epicenter,' and 'Waiting For Peace' and 'Wispy Rays.' I have a large bunch of seedlings that should bloom for the first time this year, and I am SO excited. Thank you all very much for your sympathy! It's just.. that it is the first time this happened. I don't believe I ever lost a daylily. Thanks Marg, yes that's strange, mine seemed to grow well too like you said about your seedlings, I don't know what happened. Thanks Nancy, yes I remember reading about yours, so sad. 75 is a lot :( Thanks Sarah and Deangreen, those old peonies turned to be very easy to grow, hope it continues Thanks Jean, yep, just up and died :( Thanks Mantis, the heaved one were not completely exposed. And no I didn't mulch (I never did). Some of them were started in pots! I can't think of anything regarding Knockout Thanks Debra. Yes, probably drought. I don't have any daisies, and only creeping phlox - no problem there. Thank you very much for your generous offer. Is it when freezing and no snow? Because we always had snow, but this winter was a little different. Yes, I had some rot during last year drought but they all recovered, some completely some not. Bad thing too, this rot Thanks Kay, I actually did pot up half of one plant, it died even faster than the one left in the ground. It was Handwriting on the WAll. Got it from Maryott, and it was bogo, and big.. never thought I'd have a problem. I don't know what to do and how to help those tiny ones like in 2nd picture. They just don't grow at all. As for the list, one of the dead ones was Xia Xiang, had it three years never saw a flower :) I don't think I'd replace it. Got it for the name (I am silly like that). Got Iowa Girl b/c I live in Iowa. Kitty Wells b/c we had a cat named Kitty, stuff like that. I was looking forward to Linda Beck, but it's easy to replace. If somebody ordered from Maryott at the same time last year maybe you remember that one of the promos was Rachelle Agin. I was excited to get it as a bonus because otherwise I couldn't afford it. Well.. maybe it was a sign that I don't need them.. I don't remember right now how many I ordered last year but quite a bit (for me), and only two are doing well. Thought I should mention them - it's The Band Played On (really wanted it, and I'm glad it didn't die) and JKO. Both have scapes!

Jessica, Thanks for the pic... wowzers - I can't wait!! I am currently taking a break from sweating like crazy from putting my 'black gold' into my beds (getting ready for my order to arrive). I figured today was perfect since it is only 75 and overcast! Great day to dig holes. P.S. that is amazing for Texas in July... Juliet - I hear you... The BF listens but sometimes I think he is thinking about washing his socks or something that interests him more! He is not real interested in gardening, but he will digs holes if I ask!! I use part mushroom compost, part peat, part vermiculite, part perilite, and lots of a regular garden soil and mix it all together... then blend it with my regular bedding mix that is already out there (which is cow poo compost, sand, soil and I guess some left over clay as that is the natural Texas garbage I have naturally). Everything seems to grow like crazy in it. All of the DL I have gotten (which is not too many - 16) seem to just love it. I put them in, and within 2 weeks they all have new leaves and some even new scapes. Could be the varieties I bought (Strawberry Candy and Going Bananas are just that... Going Bananas - do I have a food DL thing going on here???). But my understanding is that they can grow just about anywhere... but I think they like loose, well drained soil. I just want my purples and blues to be vibrant!! We will see what happens... I am new to all this too, so I read as much as I can and defer to the experts here! Jan - I am still in the buying phase... maybe after a few years I might breed my own and toss them to good friends, but I hope the need to have a daylily farm dosen't hit me!! I hear that is the last step in the disease progression. ;o)

There are about 20 DLs in this new bed, not including the new ones in the second pic. I'm giving away 3 that I have more than one of to my sister. (Happy Returns, Prairie Blue Eyes, and Strawberry Candy. I'll probably also give her Blackberry Candy just because I'm not crazy about how it looks.) That gives me 4 more places for my new ones being delivered in Sept. If I'm really strapped for space I'll give her or my mom one of my Joan Seniors. But I live Joan Sr. - such a great bloomer and still going. Like most newbies, I ordered some I shouldn't have (too similar to another one I ordered, etc...) so I'm learning the hard way. Once everything blooms next year I'll know better what colors/shades, etc.. I have too much of and what I'm lacking.

Thanks for all the glamour shots of Golliwog. I had it briefly, but mistakenly shipped it to a customer as something else. I knew from your other photo that the scapes had a lot of buds this time. Your clump shots are real eye candy.The Destined to See quartet is my favorite of those. I noticed my clump of Destined To See has really nice side branching this season. In the previous 6-7 years it's only had top branching. I must have fertilized it at just the right time this year!

Love Destined To See and the whole eight! Bold Tiger lookalikes, and the very favorite is W Mom's Cinnamon Rolls, it's gorgeous (and tasty name ;)

What's not to like? Westbournes Mom's Cin. Rolls is a great picture, and you know how much I like your Star Child. Maybe it's the yellow, Bodacious Returns. I have my thing for yellow. Leebea Orange Crush catches my eye too. Heck, they are all winners.....Maryl

Yes, yes, yes....I love more GOLLIWOG pictures! What's not to love? Not only is it unique & gorgeous but look at all those scapes and buds! Wish my Earlybird order would hurry up and come.....I still can't plant out my Golliwog. I'm worried that my order is going to come when DD is in labor, which is any day now. It's a BIG order so I guess they'll sit in buckets for awhile if that happens.
All your daylilies look ravishing and so healthy and neatly mulched. Of course Golliwog is my favorite but there are so many others that could be second. Love those clump shots! W. Mom's Cinnamon Rolls and Bold Tiger lookalike are my next picks. I'm sure I will come back and look again & again for the pretty eyecandy.

Picture 3 is perfectly proportioned and illuminated. Mom's Cinnamon Rolls is very interesting. When I google it, I notice a lot of variation in pics in terms of the russet coloring.

Avedon, I have Golliwog and think it a special one. Not bright in color but it makes a lovely clump..
