How do I store Day Lilies

I had to dig and seperate some Day Lilies today. What would be the best way for me to store them untill I have time to replant them? How long will they last in storage?

You can put them in a grocery bag in the shade without soil for quite a few days,or with soil for weeks.Trim the foliageto about 4-6".

hi if you want to keep them for a few days or up to a week or a little longer do what i do.mark fans place in water up to but not over the crowns change water about every other day or 3rd day if longer give them a light shot of fert.

I think most of us store them in the ground and harvest as needed. At least that was what most indicated in another discussion about this just down the page. I linked it for you below. I do a 10 min. ice water soak on mine as harvested and then store in the vegetable drawer in the fridge. But since you already harvested them - got a root cellar or a dark cool corner of the basement? Beets I usually can as they won't keep for too long. Carrots cleaned, chunked and put into a ziplock bag with a damp paper towel will keep for weeks in the fridge, I guess it all depends on how many you have? Ray, the other way is to keep it indoors in a warm enough place with lots of light. This works for Sharon (Norah S), she has pots full of them and they grow babies and everything. But it isn't easy to get the light and temp right - she gave me a baby last year and apparently I didn't give it enough light or something, because it went dormant and never sprouted again. So she gave me a new one this summer. She has great faith in me! It did OK in the pond, and we took it inside to our indoor mini pond last weekend. It still has one bud. Now I'm worrying it will not make it through the long winter, like the other one - maybe I'll follow Horton's method after it stops blooming! :) Mary

How to store water lilies over winter?

I store my hardy waterlilies in the tubs they are growing in, still wet, in closed garbage bags in the basement. Cut off all of the lily pads and flower stems, and let them go dormant for the winter. There is not enough sunlight or warmth to allow them to grow and flower in the winter anyway. I open the bag once a month, if I remember it, just to exchange the air. In the spring they are starting to re-sprout new leaves, and they are ready to be divided and re-potted, fertilized, or just put directly back into the pond. They could stay out in the pond as long as they don't freeze but my pond is only 2 1/2' deep so I don't risk loosing them, and just haul them into the basement. I've wintered them over for 15 or more years this way.

Daylilies are so tough and I know most will not believe this. We had an absolutely brutal winter. Late last fall, I dug and divided MAGIC CARPET RIDE to put in another place because it was completely over-crowding its neighbors. Just yesterday, I was digging in that bed to make room for other daylilies and noticed two divisions of MAGIC CARPET RIDE that had laid on top of the soil all fall/winter/spring and were green and looking just fine.

They were exposed to all of the elements all winter and made it through. I wouldn't ever suggest you do that on purpose, but if you need to keep divisions, they do just fine if they are kept dry and in a cool place. Once you are ready to plant them, you can re-hydrate them in a bucket of water over-night.
