I know what you mean, I have dug what is left of my iris from an overgrown bed and now all my iris are heeled in the daisy bed. The tags are gone but I do have a list of what ones I have had so should be able to figure it out when they bloom again. I did acquire a new to me variety recently :o) and it is planted in it's permanent home. I have to dig some more lawn up in front will be playing musical chairs with a lot of daylilies this fall, so much to do, so little time but the weather as long as it cooperates I hope to get done what the weather wouldn't let me last year.

I agree with you completely on the long-dreaded dividing of iris. You've inspired me to get some of my once blooming irises divided soon.

I have divided some of my Siberian iris and whew, it's some work to get those puppies up out of the ground. I read somewhere that Siberian and Louisiana irises should not be replanted in the same place, after dividing, so I end up with plants in hand walking around finding new spots for them.

I have some bearded iris that I want to divide but they rebloomed last year so I'm hoping they will again this year. So I'm waiting to see - I'd hate to lose the second bloom on them by digging them up now. Then again, maybe they won't rebloom because they're too crowded.

I've got so many new plants either ready to put in the ground plus bulbs that I've ordered that haven't arrived yet - I'm busy all day in the garden. One of the glorious advantages of being retired. I must admit it's more fun than watering and being driven inside by the heat that I described as "hotter than the fires of hell" :-)

When I planted most of my iris and daylilies, I didn't know what color they were going to be, as I got them from a yard where a house was going to be torn down.

I took pics of each one this summer, then the rows in an effort to see which ones were where. We'll see if I can find the photos and be able to tell for sure when the time comes. In the mean time, I'm just leaving them where they are. I am in a group that has a plant sale in the spring, so hopefully, if I decide to take some starts of the daylilies, I'll be able to tell what color they are. LOL

I hope you find a good place to plant yours, and I know wherever they land, they will be pretty when they bloom.

I've been "planning" to divide my old irises since June, but whoa! What a chore! Not sure my legs and back can stand it. There are Irises everywhere (that's one plant that can grow really well in Oklahoma). They have multiplied so much that they are stacked on top of each other like turtles on a log in a pond on a hot day!!!
I have way too many of the two-toned red-violet ones and purple with red-violet falls. They are the most prolific reproducers I have. Man they multiply!
I am going to take all the extras out and toss them out along the highway grader ditches leading in and out of town. This town is about dried up and dead. We need something to bring people here. How about an Iris Festival in May every year? The downtown streets are extra wide - built back in the cowboy days, so there is plenty of room. Irises blooming all over downtown and all along the highway coming into town? A small investment for the town in general if everyone divides up their irises and just tosses some of them out along the highway. And it wouldn't take any time at all before it could become a reality....don't you think?
Anyway, that is my pipe dream.

They always bloom so beautifully the following year after being divided and reset that it almost makes the horrific job & back pain bearable...well, almost.

That sounds like a beautiful dream.....now go do it. An iris festible in May here wouldn't work....most of the bearded iris bloom here in late june for the small ones to mid Aug for the talls. LOL

I have been dividing iris since they finished blooming. I have thrown tons away. I actually like to divide bearded iris, because they are just about the easiest plant to divide in my garden. The problem is, that I try to find places to plant the spares.....and I just don't have the room. Now having said that, I added 25 or so new ones this year plus the 4 that were just added not to long ago.

I think the iris thing is a cool idea. When we went to North Carolina the second week of June in '07, there were day lilies all over the highway for quite a lot of the state. I'm thinking they were all yellow. Someone should put some irises with them!

Would you believe this is the third day and I am not finished yet....sadly can only identify about 4 of them.

I have three huge clumps left by the bird bath and I do know what they are...two different pinks and a lavender.

I don't have nearly all of them replanted yet.

I am copying Rita's idea of laying out the large driveway bed in a grid pattern with planting blocks. I am using the old alfalfa hay flakes to lay it out. This is the bed that I have sprayed repeatedly with glyphosphate to try to eliminate the violets that were crowding out everything.

I think I will now just fill all the bare spots with iris and see what happens next year. No doubt will have some really interesting combinations!

What I don't get rid of, I will just plant on the west side of the shop...just worried it won't have enough sun, but maybe I will get some bloom.

Still have the two rows of daylilies left to do.
