First Daylily Bloom, Dutch Iris, Iris Views

Its dark and raining again today, gee what a surprise LOL! But I still had to go out to see the garden and take pictures. Glad I did as I found my very first daylily of the year blooming and there are more buds to come.

Don't get too excited its only one of the Olallie VT unregistered extra earlies. In fact it doesn't even have a name, they only gave it a number.

My Stella Supremes have scapes but the buds are small. Other than that, no daylily scapes much less blooms here.

Some of my Dutch Iris have started to bloom. Only the yellow ones so far which are in my TB iris bed in the back. But more will be coming soon in lots of different colors.

Here is the backyard Iris bed those Dutch Iris are blooming in. Just off to the right corner you can just get a small view of my Lupine experiment. Which is annual Lupine seeds I sowed in early mid March. They are gowing well but too small to bloom and I am not a patient person.

Congrats on your first daylily opening of the season.Registered or not, it is a daylily. Iris are so pretty.

No rain here yet and the sun has been out most of today but the winds are blowing strong. Prediction of severe thunderstorms for later today. Been in the 70's here the last few days. Wonderful change. No more hot chocolate with marshmallows LOL.

They actually said it would only be cloudy today not rain on last night's weather repot. Guess they were wrong. It think it might have stopped now that I am finished with my daily pictures and got wet taking them :-(

That daylily is one of the ones I got afew years ago before I even had iris. I was trying to get bloom before regular daylily season. I soon realizied that the extra early daylilies were nothing much to look at so I decided to try iris. Got the TB iris crazies. The iris are a much better solution for early bloom than trying the extra early and always yellow daylilies.

I've planted Dutch iris, but the only ones that have lingered & bloom are yellow. I have Eye of the Tiger, but they have not bloomed for 2 years. I'm going to divide them when the foliage dies back & see if that is the problem. They have certainly multiplied since I planted them. Yours look just great. They have them growing occasionally at the nursery here, but usually I just see them as bulbs. I'll have to remember to pick up some more next year after seeing yours. You are such a bad influence Rita!

Love the color of Kickapoo Kangaroo! Isn't it funny, my Siberian iris just started blooming, saw the first bloom yesterday. Well, just went back & saw where you said this is a very early one. I have Caesar's Brother & a yellow one, can't remember the name but very common. Butter & eggs maybe. I'm so glad your iris are starting to bloom, I'm looking forward to your photos!

I almost missed realizing that there was a bloom on Kickapoo Kangeroo. I just happened to notice the splash of color as I was walking by on the way to Spot Starter. I am sure it will look much better when it blooms on a real stalk LOL! Kay- I know you love purple and KK is purple and very crazy splashed colors. Nancy- I wouldn't go by the bloom on China Spring to say it is Siberian Iris bloom time around here. Nothing else even has stalks so this one is out of the gate way ahead of all others and in a different time zone.

I find this lovely in May when I used to have to wait for the daylilies close to July. You might also want to consider adding a few of the shorter varieties of bearded irises, as they start blooming long before the TB. My shorter varieties are usually pretty well finished blooming before the TB start. And if you want something earlier than them, consider a bunch of different daffodil cultivars as they range from very early ones to extra late. Good for your bloom, but the iris certainly are stealing the show!! You didn't have issues with all the rain,? I have several TB Iris that have turned mushy, some of the buds, and some of the bottom of the stems/leaves. We had 4 1/2 inches of rain over a 3 day period, and the poor things sat in water for a bit. Maybe mine weren't as far along as yours when we got all the rain. I may have to raise those beds after blooming season.

The rain sometimes makes Stalks lean so I have to stake afew of them. Plus it had shredded some of the very early blooms begining of last week. And I do not believe they are lasting as long as they do in drier weather before being done spent blooms. But otherwise they look really great. They don't rot, at least the flowers don't. I had some rhizomes rot early this spring but what can you do. Iris love to rot :-(

It is always nice to get that first daylily bloom though, and it is a pretty yellow. Who needs daylilies though when you have such lovely iris. Great pictures!
Storms are predicted every day this week, now I'm hoping that daylily blooms will wait a while :)

Well, Rita, at least it is a daylily bloom. You have some pretty Iris blooming,I llike that dark blue one.Its pretty.I like that Pink one, too.

Your irises are fantastic..I'm especially drawn to the pink one and Titan's glory. I should probably get some. All I have blooming now is a fantastic little aquilegia and 3 flowers on our teeny strawberry. LOL. The green is soothing, though.
Julia, you can tell it rained too long this year because I actually got tired of hot chocolate and switched to Chai. ;)

Your iris are stunning. What is your secret with Dutch iris? I have grown them in the past, but they never come back.

Once I discovered the iris I was very happy as it gave me that bloom season I had been trying to find with those extra early daylilies. Honestly about the only great thing about that daylily is that I am able to post on May 23 that I have a daylily bloom. But otherwise forget it.

Those few extra earlies are in a row in front of the extra lates in the front yard. Sooner or later I will get the urge and find more extra lates. Then I will replace the really nerdy extra earlies and take their spots. Meantime they stay.

Christine- I have no secret with the Dutch Iris. I planted them all last fall, they came up this spring. I am hoping they come back each year but that remains to be seen. I do know that I plan to get more to plant in other places this fall.
