The scoop on winter sun

I'll try my best not to ramble but no promises!

So during the growing season its widely excepted that plants that enjoy relief from the sun can either be put in 4-6 hours of sun or should be positioned in morning to early afternoon sun.

But during the winter are there any general rules to follow?

How much is too much?

Is afternoon sun better than morning sun since the tissue may be defrosted versus the frozen tissue be lit up by the early morning sun?

I'm mainly referring to gold conifers. Perhaps winter sun really isn't an issue except for very senative cultivars.

I began pondering this after noticing my 'Skylands' has sun from 9am to 2pm during the winter.
