Springing to life in my garden

I am so excited the Black Eyed Suzies are winking at me! Ducklings are hatching,the Hollyhocks are reaching for the sky! The butterflies and bees are keeping me company while I weed!

I do have some crocus that are blooming, but I vow to move them next year because they were planted behind some large hollies (previous owners--not me) and nobody can see them unless you're standing directly above them. I'd love to move them down by the mailbox. My tulips are growing, but so far I don't have any buds. My verbena is looking lively. I have a few glorious leaves on a black and blue salvia that I bought at the end of the year last year at the farmer's market and I wasn't quite sure if it was going to make it and it looks like it did, so I'm very glad. All of my rose bushes are showing signs of new growth. I also have a weigelia that looks like it's getting a few nubs on the tips of it's branches. I'll keep my fingers crossed on that one because I thought for sure it was a drought victim. I see daffodils everywhere and I must put it in my calendar to plant some bulbs this fall. They cheer me up so much and I want some in my own garden. But for the most part, my garden is looking a little tired and lifeless. Maybe with some careful planning this year, it will look so much better next spring.

I ran the zapper for a few nights before getting the ladys, killed most of the moths and other fliers i think. Watching the lady bugs come out of slow poke mode and go ravenous on the aphids was something else. I think out of "2000" maybe half were alive. most likely more along the lines of 500 or so total and a few hundred alive. many beetle hulls in the tops of my cups.

Eden (climber): 3 grafted roses in 2nd year. They are extremely healthy with amazing blooms. Last year they didn't repeat a lot but I guess because they were still young. They don't have any fragrance but with all their positive sides, they are perfect just the way they are. I think their magnificent looks on arbors or pergolas inspire people to grow climbing roses. Golden Celebration: the open bloom and the bud next to each other are just too adorable. Julia Child: this tree rose exceeds all expectations. Bewitched: this bloom looks like it was in a fight with a thorny cane and came out smiling with scars and all. I named it "The Survivor" :) Marilyn Monroe: every bloom is a perfect bloom.

No we cannot keep all the ducks.Usually we eat the eggs, but like to hatch some each spring. Actually we sold the entire batch of ducklings to a farmer on the third day but we have other mamas setting. We have 8 adults and have owned as many as 21 at a time but 21 on two and a half acres is too many!This was an early batch so we had no trouble getting rid of them.And they hatched during that last cold spell which makes it harder to deal with, heat lamp set ups etc.

I absolutely love your blog and your photography is wonderful. Those asian hollyhocks are to die for, and I love the area around your little green bench with all the pink and purple. What are some of those flowers?

I never tire of seeing your ducks and ducklings (or your precious grandkids). You are a lucky lady.

I have 46 chicken eggs in the incubator at the moment, due day is around 12 days away. Most are Rhodes Island Reds & also some Barred Rock eggs that are RIR sex-linked. I swap the chicks for feed at my local Hay Barn. That way my eating eggs are free and the poop keeps the garden happy.

anna-the purple path boasts purple lantana, purple pentas, heliotrope, and scabiosas. My grangkids love to bop the floppy heads of the scabiosas as they walk by.
Lou- you are lucky to have an incubator.Our money from the ducklings bought 4 bags of duck food. We eat duck eggs and use the dirty straw in compost, now if I just didnt have to pay so much for straw!
