Honeysuckle: Goldflame or John Clayton

I would like to add another honeysuckle vine to the garden. I have two of the coral already. Does anyone have experience growing either Goldflame or John Clayton.

If yes, does it continue in your garden or have you yanked it? If yanked, why? - June

I have a John Clayton that is about 1 1/2 years old, planted on the south and west corner of my home. It had flowers even during this past cold winter. Now it has lots of flowers but not much foliage. Of course, that could be something I'm doing wrong. It is a neat vine and the hummers like it. andy

I live in Lakeland too. Where did you get your Goldflame Honeysuckle?

I only grow Major Wheeler and I prune it throughout the year when it gets in the way. I would think that with most of them you'd want to wait until they are done flowering.

Probably now is a good time to transplant it. I wouldn't wait until summer. I'm not familiar with John Clayton Honeysuckle but if it's supposed to twine I've had luck using fishing line.

How to plant John Clayton Honeysuckle

Just dig holes, loosen the root ball and pop it in the hole. It will twine itself around your fence and you will have to guide it. I'd suggest measuring the length of your fence, dividing it by 3 and plant one in each spot. It will take a couple of years to mature, settle in and really take off.

I have the John Clayton and got it from an eBay seller from Jasper, Arkansas. He also has the Goldflame for sale. I have purchased many great plants from him and have had wonderful luck. If you would like his eBay moniker, let me know and I'll email you the info. Andy
