Fighting the winter yard blahs

I assume if you live in a place that gets feet of snow, you don't worry about it much as everything is white.

And if you live in San Diego, you really don't have winter, per se.

But if you live where it hardly snows in winter but isn't tropical, such as in the Pacific Northwest, how do you keep your flower beds looking nice in the winter? Your bulbs aren't pretty. Your plants that drop leaves are sticks. Your ferns are cut back. Do you put a lot of evergreens in? What tricks have you learned, please?
