Silly ?, but what to do w/ DL seeds?

Hi! This is my first time on this website, but I am so happy to have found it! I love daylillies. Not knowing anything about them, but buying them anyway, last season I had seed pods form. I harvested little seeds from them, put them in a baggy in my fridge for winter and tried sprouting them this spring. My method, as w/ most of my seeds, was to start it in a plastic strawberry container that I filled w/ dirt of course and watered. Nothing ever came up though! I'm starting to see seed again now for this year. Should I harvest them? When exactly? Thanks for any help on this! All of your pictures are so beautiful that it's made me want to start looking for different types of DL for myself.

Hi and welcome! The first thing is,were the seeds mature? Below is a page that should answer your questions.There is also the possibility that the seeds were sterile.What Daylilies do you have?

Unfortunetly I don't know! The oldest ones are those plain, regular orange/yellow ones. The newest ones I got last year were a lighter yellow w/ ruffly edges. At the time I didn't know there were different varieties! I'd never seen any around here. Thanks for the site and I'll do some research on it. My seeds were black if that helps.

Michelle - I feel your pain. I think I lost a total of 15 registered cultivars, mostly newer cultivars. I've been through it several times before, so it doesn't surprise me. I'm sure many of our member have had losses this year. Those of you who've been around for a few years will remember about three years ago when some of our Southern members lost hundreds grown in pots. It's much harder on those new to daylilies, who don't have that many. What bothers me more than the registered ones, is the 150 seedlings I lost. I had put a lot of planning, time and effort into those and it will take years to replace them. But people, this pity party for me must stop. REALLY! Hi Catrina, I have over 100 Texas Star Hibiscus seeds that are red in color. I got them from my plants this past month (September 2010).I also have a piece of Cyperus alternifolius cutting also known as "Umbrella plant".You can root the top of the plant in water to get roots and pot plant up.Both of these are water loving plants. Flowergirl, The white bump on the end of the seed means it has germinated and you can plant it. Lay it sideways in the hole. I use peroxide because it is a sanitizer. We use it in our dairy barn to sanitize our milk pipeline now instead of harsh chemicals. With the seeds I think it keeps the water from growing any bacteria. If you have excellent quality seeds and you change the water often you maybe don't need it. But I think it helps here so I use it. Sometimes one seed that maybe isn't quite mature can start to rot and cause problems with the whole bunch. Some people think the peroxide helps with the germination but i don't know about that. I was soaking some seeds of shrubs that needed soaked and dried for 10 days before sowing. They grew quite slimy and dark looking. I soaked them in some peroxide and water and it took off the slime right away.

For some reason BM gets out of that sticky situation too... no clue what she says or does ... last time I knew she had til August 26th to make atleast 1 months payment plus 25% of the arrears or all licenses would be suspended ... but in Mass they cancel everything including your vehicle registrations. She hasn't made an official payment since June 27th and before that was April 7th. When hubby called about it they told him all they could do was send her "another letter" ... he asked how many letters will have to be sent before anything is actually done. We have a friend who was self employed was out of work for a couple of months with a broken leg and wrist etc. (he was attacked by a group of kids and dragged by a car for 3 blocks )couldn't pay his support everything was cancelled in less than 60 days. But BM doesn't make a payment for 4 months and they don't do anything.

The orange ones are probably the ditchlilies,and if you could post a picture and tell us where you got the yellows and how tall the scape and size of the bloom,we may be able to tell you what it is.

Thanks! The site really helped! I'll post pics as soon as I have a chance. I forgot I also got some beautiful red/burgandy ones this year that are doing great. Thanks!
