Anyone growing Ficus carica Petite Negra?

I got one in a pot, it's supposed to be an early fruiting variety..wondering if anyone has one too? I don't have a lot of experience growing figs indoors, the one fig I had, I killed! :O I think I overwatered it. I guess they like dry conditions....better get a terra cotta pot, eh?

Figs indoors won't perform well. Set your pot outdoors in the warmest, sunniest spot you have available. Do be sure to keep it well watered, but let the excess drain freely from the pot (don't use a saucer). Clay pots are good because they breath and excess water wicks away quickly; cons are they can dry out too quickly and are heavy. Store your fig in an unheated garage or basement during the winter months.

Hi Gene!
Actually the nursery that sells them says they can be grown indoors, since they are 'dwarf' plants..allegedly they are supposed to fruit at only 12 inches high. Wow!

Anyway, so far it's still alive. Luckily our whole house is cold in the winter, except for a few rooms that have a heater in them. Are they day sensitive?

Danny's delight is not necessarily hardy to zone 5. It's as hardy as other figs. You'll still need to grow it in a warm micro climate. If given the right protection it may survive and produce for you. Bass

From what I understand George, this isn't just a curiosity. It's a good fig. I was told that the breba crop is very early, followed by a September main crop of huge, good black figs. I asked about fig size differences between the two crops and was told that they are about the same size, with the breba crop being fewer in number. I would think that a prostrate fig would be attractive, but that it would be difficult to get figs, unless you put on top of a wall,or a pedestal, so the branches aren't all over the ground. This tree is very upright (and tall), the specimen that I saw was cut off at about five feet, and I'm sure it would naturally go much higher. The Belleclare web site is still up, and I had hoped the telephone number was still working - I called this morning. Unfortunately, it's no longer in service. I vaguely remember someone mentioning that the nursery land was being sold. So I assume the address isn't any good, either. Would anyone in the area know how to contact the DePaolo's? I think it is likely that the original owner of the tree got it from Belleclare, and that they might know something about it's origins and identity. And if anyone is aware of any weeping figs, I'd appreciate hearing about them.

It's hard to tell without a clearer image. As long as it grows then anything should be fine.

I have one that I bought from Parks. It produced One fig last year and about a dozen this year. I have it in about a five gallon pot and am planning to put it in a larger pot this fall. Hopefully it will get larger and produce more fruit. - Jim

I second Gene's advice ... this is a deciduous tree ... it likes to sleep over the winter. I have found trees that I attempted to keep indoors w/o sleep tended to get weak over time.

Hi Steve!

I'll have to try that then..I know how I get without sleep, I'm like a zombie! I did get a passionflower to overwinter indoors (I thought I killed it, but it came back, I was sooo happy! :), so I'll try it with this one too. Thank you all for your advice. :)
