FIcus Carica (edible fig) question

I am finding some very conflicting information in regards to growing/collecting F carica seed.

I have seen seed available, so that is not the problem. The problem is the fact that some sources state that THEY DO NOT NEED A POLLINATOR AND REGULARLY PRODUCE VIABLE SEED. This is contrary to everything I thought I knew about figs. Im aware that its possible the proper wasp has made it to the US, but theym being "Self fertile" to some degree, is a new one to me.

Also, I read that its more then possible, to get some dried figs, and use the seeds from them to germinate.

Can anyone here clarify this?

The figs grown by home gardeners don't need to be pollinated.

The figs sold as dried figs are different; they need a pollinator.

Common figs do not need a pollinator and in turn do not produce viable seed. Your sources for this info are questionable and I would go to a more reliable source like the Figs 4 fun website.

Bass i forget if i posted a link or that picture a while back on one of the forums, some said that particular fruit is very small, i just dont recall if it was mentioned about the fig wasp. It caught my eye because of the type of enviorment it grows in.

Let it grow for the season, and then when it is dormant, prune it back to the height you want. Some varieties need to get a few years root growth, and then when pruned severely, they will begin branching. It took three years for my Long Yellow to get the message to branch.

Hello, I have 3 of these in 6 inch pots, about 80cm-1m tall. Apparently the fruit is quite nice, and although these fruited in pots (but will need transplanting soon) birds got them before I could test. Would like to trade for interesting edibles - especially perennials, fruit trees etc. Located in Doveton but can bring to Melbourne Uni if that helps. Cheers! Mike
