vanderwolf pine turning brown

I have a vanderwolf pine that was planted in september of '06. It has been very healthy and beautiful up till now. It gets full sun and has grown wonderfully, but suddenly the ends of the branches (needles) are turning brown - mostly towards the top of the tree. Also, the color of the tree generally is not as vibrant as it was just a short while ago. I haven't been doing anything different - any info or help would be appreciated - i would sure hate to lose it.

doesnt sound good... we really need a picture ...

please provide more info ... beyond its browning..

how was it planted...

how was it watered after planting ..

any other problems in the garden.. like half the yard died after the neighbor sprayed his lawn ... in other words.. can we rule out chemical injury ...

bought my Vanderwolf pine in the fall of 07...

planted in a pretty much sunny area with hostas around it...

gave it "plenty" of water....

in spring 08 the tips of the needles were already turning brown...

talked with the nursery about it and they said it "might" be wind damage...

by August it was 50% brown....took a picture of it and went back to the nursery....they gave me full credit for it...

haven't gotten it dug out yet....but it is "Totally" brown now...

a real Charlie "BROWN" Christmas tree....haha...

p.s....the nursery then told me they are pretty finicky...you can "Overwater" or "Underwater"....soooo...back to the drawing board for me...

The top of the root ball is below the surrounding grade. Not sure what amend the soil means but I put really good soil in the hole. I know the hole was pretty big.I had a neighbor walk by as I was planting it and said I needed a pretty big hole. I did remove the burlap, but someone also told me the roots would grow through the burlap? I'm obviously a first-timer.

We will find out that it was one of the toughest winter for a long time for tender plants, especially for the first winter and zone 4 rating cultivars. Not sure if this was grafted to a hardier cultivar,...as I was reading, some sell them grafted. Sun scalding is especially bad for the first couple of winters,.. what I have done with my Spruce and Pine in the fall, sprayed with a latex water mix for reflection of sun ray, this seemed to help them when small. You can also cover them with burlap or block the sunlight from the south with some means of temporary fencing. Lets hope they will make it, perhaps they do if you had a good snow cover. Konrad

hand trowel.. dig small hole... insure that water is getting down into the root ball ... using a slow trickle from the hose... and then dont water again.. until it nearly dries.. how that all works in your soil.. in your area.. in your yard is beyond the rest of us .... no points for guessing .... standing water in the hole.. if you have that famous OH clay.. can be worse than to little water ... as i have typed that a couple hundred times in the last few months ... i suggest that you review a few pages of old posts.. you may find other things you may have done wrong.. other than 'recently' planting a pine tree ... ken

the water requirements of hosta and conifers are diametrically opposed...

your goal is to drown a hosta ...

you starve conifers of water .... except for the first two years after planting ... BUT NEVER DROWN THEM ..

though i have conifers in my hosta beds... the drip irrigation is only on the hosta.. not the conifers ....
