Curiosity

I'm curious about the fertilization process, and hope someone can answer my question. Once pollen from one flower "mates" with the pollen from another flower, how long is it before the fertilization is complete? Most of my flower heads dry and wither and fall off within about 24-36 hours, so I assume if the mating takes, it happens quickly. What about deadheading your plants each day? Do you loose all chance of seed pods developing? I'd love to experiment with hybridizing, just for fun. However, I also like my garden to look tidy, and generally remove the old flower heads the next day. Will I have to change my "housekeeping" habits if I want seed pods?

Thanks.

Susan
