Update on Misc. Fig Pic, Sept 5

I picked The 2nd. fig from this tree, The one showing green.

It weighed in at 100gr., (3 1/2 oz). verified on 2 scales. Larger than the first at 70gr. It was badly cracked and the ants were at it. It was large enough to slice thru the center and then discard a slice on both halves which didn't look too good and might still have hidden ants.

This one tasted better than the first. (See previous post pics) This fig is great for show. There is a lot of tasteless white flesh at the stem end and under the skin. The center, what I got of it, was pretty good. I'm still undesided. There are still 2 more to ripen. Even tho it was badly split and soft it was still hard to get off the tree.

I had to cut it off. Since it is a 2006 cutting I'll keep it for study and see how it does.

Berrrrrrrrrr. It is cold here. In the 40's this morning, cold NW 20mph wind. I took in 6 young'ens that have unripe figs. I hope it will be warm enough later in the week to keep them out all night.

I hope you Northeastern fig growers don't lose the figs you waited for all year.

I have one identical with yours and I allready ate one fig.
It was Good But not excellent,in my climate.I can see it could be excellent in dryier,hoter climates. The one you see here is about 100 grams.This is not the English Brn.Trk,and not The Ca.Brn trk,but another Brn trk very possible the one originating from Provence,Southern France.

Uncovered my LW yesterday and everything looks good. Branches still green right to the tips (about 5') However, when I stuffed it with leaves (really dry) I only had enough for about 4' where the buds/figs are still green. The last foot had only a plastic tarp protecting so the buds/figs look a little fried but still green underneath. First time I ever tried winterizing. I used those collapsible tomato cages. I put 2 together, horizontally not vertically. Gives you a 29" x 29" square, if a square is what you want. I found using the cages very flexible. You can stack them. You can make it virtually any dimension and height you want. Its got those spikes on the bottom so you just stick it in the ground and its collapsible so its easy to store. I wrapped the whole thing with tar paper but next year I think I will put the paper inside and let the leaves hold it up against the cage. I'm already dreaming about how many trees I can put in the ground. I'm saving leaves early this year. Almost all the potted figs look like they made it OK. Only loses were some late season rootings/layers. I moved a bunch of figs under the lights a couple of weeks ago to give them a kick start.

Hi Landscapewitch, You've got that right--I love anoles and never get tired of watching them. It's been so long since I've seen an anole with a broken-off-tail that I can't even remember if I ever saw one with a tail growing back! The first time I tried to catch an anole, many many years ago now, I grabbed it by the tail. What a shock that was to end up with a wiggling tail in my hand! I still get the frissons when I think about that. :) I love our geckos, as well. There are large, glass windows across the peak of the roof across the front of our house and the geckos hang out on those windows in the warm weather. I stay up very late and the light draws the moths that they like to eat, so I have spent hours upon hours watching them. Last year, one of the geckos had a fork at the end of its tail. This year, I saw a gecko with the same fork at the end of its tail. I don't know if it's an anomaly, or if it's on the same gecko. noss

My deliberation process was interrupted by the phone. It seems someone stole my husband's credit card number so they're having to cancel his card and issue a new one. Want a good laugh? Hi, Y'all-- Oh, WOE is me!!! I'm afraid I'm a DREADFUL Secret Pal. So that it'll get done, I've just gotta commit and PROMISE that I'll have a package out to my pal NO LATER THAN MONDAY (9-26); further, I wish to express my heart-felt apologies for the delay. (Now for the usual litany of whining and excuses...) I suspect my inability to get motivated is due, in part, to the oppressing heat, which we should've been relieved of by now (avg. temp here for late Sept. is around 86*...yesterday we hit 101* and today we expect 97*); my concerns about "Rita", and the evacuees from the Texas Gulf Coast (I offered my home as a shelter on the TX Gardening Forum), and her fallout (although I'm about 250 miles inland, forecasters here in the Dallas area are calling for a resulting tropical storm just short of a Cat. 1 hurricane); and a severe case of "light deprivation depression" (apparently I'm VERY sensitive to it, and I go thru this every year about this time, when the "daylight" hours are roughly approximate to the "nighttime" hours). This tree is young, 1 yr. I wasn't impressed with the taste but I'll give it time. There are still 2 more figs to ripen but it has gotten cold here. Supposed to warm up a bit by the end of the week. I sort of thought it was some version of Br. Tky. Did your's crack? That seemed to be the biggest problem. Split wide open and I still had to cut it off.

Yes The one you see in this picture is cracked and the one i ate was cracked too.
Like i said not too bad,when taking in account,how rainy, our weather is here,compared with Ca,or southern France.
Mine is Small too it is a cutting received in Dec.2006
It is Showy and large to be sold comercially as fresh fruit.
I do not think it will make it here in my trial row.

Herman,
It has been a very hot, dry summer here. Very few rainy days. I don't think it was rain that caused the spliting. In fact, if I didn't water it regularly it wilted.

These didn't just crack the second one split right in half. The first one had dried fibers in the center like sometimes you see at the eye end. The flavor wasn't bad. They took a long time to ripen.

We will both have to wait a year or so and see what they produce when they mature. I'm making note of the name and will so label it until someone disputes it.

Herman, That is about the same time I got mine. We will have to compare notes next season, God willing.
