I was born on north-side of Jax. Across street from present Zoo. My first fig was from piece of large, old tree from old walled church in St. Augustine, over 50 years ago.

Some lizards pull a hat-trick when attacked by a predator!
They literally drop their tail, which also tends to wiggle
for a while - predator gets confused, and goes for the loose
tail - lizard escapes - and then re-GROWS its tail later...

Hi! The old Spanish church (Abby,Monastery?) had a 5 foot wall around it, very old. Some limbs grew over the wall.
Notice the blackened stub on the lizard/Anole's tail. Sure looks like frost damage and not the new growth stump of a lost tail. Fred

It's been my observation that Anoles like to hang around fig trees. I've never seen so many of them until I got all the young fig trees and they were even all over the two grown Celestes. I don't think the anoles eat the figs, but I found one lapping at the honeydew that was at the eye of one of the figs and it had its eyes closed like it was in ecstasy while it lapped the honeydew. It was really cute. They know good things when they find them. ;)

Fredfig, I wouldn't think that an anole would have frost damage to its tail in a place like Jacksonville, FL at this time of year, but that tail does look odd. I can't remember ever having seen an anole regenerating its tail, so I don't know if it's normal, or not. I noticed it right away, too.

That's actually the new tail almost grown out. A few molts and it will look more lizard-y. The new tails are never quite the same but then we all do the best we can. Anoles are one of the many wonderful things about living in the South. (smile)

You've got that right--I love anoles and never get tired of watching them. It's been so long since I've seen an anole with a broken-off-tail that I can't even remember if I ever saw one with a tail growing back! The first time I tried to catch an anole, many many years ago now, I grabbed it by the tail. What a shock that was to end up with a wiggling tail in my hand! I still get the frissons when I think about that. :)

I love our geckos, as well. There are large, glass windows across the peak of the roof across the front of our house and the geckos hang out on those windows in the warm weather. I stay up very late and the light draws the moths that they like to eat, so I have spent hours upon hours watching them. Last year, one of the geckos had a fork at the end of its tail. This year, I saw a gecko with the same fork at the end of its tail. I don't know if it's an anomaly, or if it's on the same gecko.

Do you get the little green tree frogs at the lights too? We lived in Florida for a while and the frogs would cluster around the moth flocked lights at night and occasionally jump off and land on the lens of one's glasses. But to keep to the subject on hand, I don't remember a whole lot of figs there. But cherimoyas, carambolas, lemons, mangos, lychees.....
