pandanus veitchii

Patience is not my strong suit so rather than wait forever to see is my pandanus veitchiis (lots of them) are truly dead, I thought I'd ask you all what you think. they are all brown and I don't see any new growth from the center.Has anyone had experience with these during or after the freeze? will they come back from the roots?

I've had these for years and both green and varigated.Some had reached 12 feet or more and were a great screen in front of a fence.They were given to me by a neighbor and I'm afraid I wont'be able to purchase new ones if all mine are dead. so sad as they are show stopping!

I love these plants. Had large ones that propagated many times over the years but eventually (after a lot years) lost the mother and didn't have any suckers left. So this is now one of my future, intended acquisitions. But to get to your question, it doesn't sound too promising based on your description. These are plants originally from the South Pacific where even the occasional "cold snap" is non-existent.I suggest that you do a bit of research should you decide to start over again with the Pandanus. I have a feeling Veithcii is not the hardiest species of Pandanus--bet there are other varieties that show more frost hardiness. Good luck!

Since this is a suckering species, wait and see if any offshoots arise. Sometimes they will. P. veitchii is a common species in SoFL so if it doesn't come back they are easy to find, either in a nursery or big plants to propagate. This species can handle short spells of cold but is sensitive to long cool/cold periods like this winter.

Pandans are one of my favorite groups of plants and I am trying as many species as I can get ahold of. I am interested in cold hardiness. After this winter the hardiest species so far seems to be P. furcatus and P. tectorius.

Toni, I told you months ago that your plant was a Pandanus, when you posted photos of it. I found one in an artificial pond, probably someone had ditched it because it was getting too big. There were several trunks up to about 5 or 6 metres tall, growing partly in the water. There were a couple of tiny plants right in the water and they were white, I assumed because of lack of light. Took those home and potted them where they grew larger but still white. They were in full sun and later started to go greener. Now they're totally green but still in the pot. Haven't fertilised them but need to put them in the ground, they're getting to that size. On that El Arish Tropical Exotics page it states theirs is a dwarf form of P. veitchii. I think I've got the full sized one. They're reputed to be quite variable and the variegation unstable. Pandanus don't flower conspicuously in the way of a lot of other plants. The flowers are inconspicuous and mostly you only notice the fruits which are large. In low light the plants will become floppy, but in good light they're upright although often support themselves with prop roots. Kept indoors they'd eventually need staking, unless there were enough pups crowded around to hold them up. What do grow viney are the very closely related Freycinetias, sometimes also called Climbing Pandanus.

I used to have one about 3.5 feet in diameter. It was a while ago, but I do remember those sharp spines (especially if you accidentally rubbed against them in the direction opposite the orientation of the spines). That may be one reason that you don't see them anymore in the indoor plant trade. As I recall, they were maybe three distinct types available. One species (Veitchii) had either variegated cream colored stripes and another somewhat smaller plant had solid cream on all emerging and maturing growth. Then there was another species with reddish spine (solid green). As far as pests go, I never had a problem with any on these plants. The bugs must have been intimidated by them. This was kind of a nostalgic plant for me as I had them for many years and gave several away (they propagate easily). And people also thought those prop roots were so cool. Don't remember what happened to my plant (pretty easy to take care of and keep alive though). I finally found one for sale on eBay last year (Pandanus veichii with solid cream-colored new leaves). They just evoke images of South Sea Islands, swaying palms and gentle breezes. Guess I am just an island boy at heart. Thanks for the heads up reminder on those spines!

Pandanus tectorius grows well in coastal parts (frost-free within about 3-5 miles from the ocean) of Sydney, which has a similar climate to San Diego, though perhaps not quite so hot in summer. P. tectorius is the widespread stilt-rooted species of seashores in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including eastern Australia S to about 30 deg latitude. It makes a picturesque specimen.

There's over 700 species of Pandanus. Most of the common variegated ones are varieties of P. tectorius although they are usually sold under other names, like P. sanderi, P. baptisii, P. veitchii. Those are synonyms of P. tectorius, one of the most widespread species. Prop or stilt roots are important to P. tectorius because they grow mainly along the shoreline subject to a lot of wind and shifting sand. Some of the variegated forms grow dwarfed but some grow quite large. Cold climate and lack of direct sun would be limiting factors. P. amaryllifolius has a plain green colour, never seen or heard of a variegated one. The fragrance isn't strong but I've never used it in cooking. Maybe the heating process brings something out of it that's not so noticeable in the fresh leaf. Other Pandanus leaves I've crushed haven't had any hint of fragrance in them.

Thanks so much, Eric, you made me feel better as I now know I can probably find new ones.
The problem I have today is that I have just sold my house and will be moving before new shoots arrive, if they are going to. I hate to leave the brown plants for the new owners, but hopefully they will understand!
In fact, much of the garden will be brown but can't be helped.
