How about a blue bald cypress?

Since nobody is impressed with the super rare stuff (: - How about a blue form of something common? I found this glaucous form of bald cypress last summer. The photo doesn't do it justice.

How do I germinate cypress (bald)

Put mine in pot with heavy clayey-loam topsoil. Place pot in tub of water in January outside. Try to keep water level in tub equal to soil level in pots. (more or less at times isn't too critical) Soil is either damp or sopping wet most of the time. Leave this way til mid-May, then remove pots from tub and place in full-sun with every other day watering. Usually get over 75% germination. Will let them grow together and then separate to individual pots toward end of summer. From what I've read, 90 days of seed exposure to wet or very moist conditions is needed. Mine always get more than that.

I stumbled across this thread and read with interest. I have an @ 8 year in ground Peve Minaret Bald Cypress planted in wet clay soil here in PNW, south end of WA. We chose this tree because we fell in love with the soft ferny needles & the interesting bark. It has developed knees quite a distance from the trunk. Because I prune it to maintain size, it has a pretty interesting branch structure all winter. I was hesitant to prune but from research on the conifer society site I learned this tree is very amenable to pruning. The conifer garden in the Oregon Garden Resort in Silvedale, OR has a couple of Peve Minarets which are pruned and they’re gorgeous speciman trees. These are older pics from 2016 & 2020 - You can see from the 4 year size difference why I needed to prune. I believed the plant tag info of a 10’ mature height. Our moderate temps & wet winters make many plants far exceed their nursery tag growth descriptions!

No bald cypress swamp close by, Reelfoot Lake is about 3-4 hours away in NW TN. It was formed by one of the strongest earthquakes ever to hit the US, it's near the New Madrid fault. The trees in the middle of the lake were there before the quakes in 1811-12 when the whole area subsided. Aerial photos show lines of cypress along what was then meanders of the Miss. River. The whole area looks like it could have been transplanted from the deep south, sans Spanish moss. Your aquatics look like spatterdock, can't remember it's binomial.

I like a blue Taxodium.
It's to bad that it's true blue colour isn't clearly visuable at this pic.

I bet Wolfgang is happy to see this one too.
He's a true Taxodium cultivar collector...

I was kidding about people not being interested BlueYew. I know this isn't as blue as some, but you can see the contrast with the typical green ones.

So which is of more interest - a Blue Baldcypress or a Blue Yew?

Yes, indeed, I'm very interested. If scions is possible, please root. I would try to root if somebody will send- well packed no problem - scions to Germany. Taxodium roots easily.

Some plant shades of red & blue photograph poorly. It's possible the colorspaces of digital cameras have a companding bias to green, because our eyes are most sensitive to that color. Thus things that are blue-green will get shifted to being more green than they really are. Salicaceae (can we just call you by the other name? easier to type!) were you suggesting it's bluer looking in real life?

David, I agree with the difficulties photographing reds and blues. This can be altered by adjusting the white balance on most digital cameras. It ranges from red to blue; I mess with it all the time to get the color I'm actually seeing.

The Texas hill-country bald cypress as a population are bluer than the standard SE bald cypress. Will see if I have any pictures that show this. Not sure how they compare to this one.

Is the biochemistry of why glaucous foliage imparts drought (presumably) resistance well characterized? This is not an aspect of plant physiology I've researched at all. Sometimes the bloom itself contributes to the blueish color: presumably a wax causes something like the Tyndall effect as it accumulates on the foliar surfaces? Just guessing...

Blue is the high end of the spectrum, so perhaps a bluish color (reflecting blue) tends to reflect damaging ultraviolet more?
