Finally, I am the proud owner of two rain barrels. Since they didn't really look that good in their original bright blue, I painted this one:

And DH turned the second one into an old-fashioned well:

Now I just have to wait for some rain

How delightful!! You are two truely talented people. I remember that my grandparents had an in-ground cistern for rainwater. That way, it didn't become ice in the winter, but your hand would freeze to the pump handle! cora

Hmm... why does it matter whether water is "stagnant" or not for watering plants? Do they care? Isn't the soil already full of bacteria and fungus and organisms? Why would it matter if there's more in the water? Aren't they simply going to be broken down in the soil? Actually, our observation is that standing water quickly forms a rather interesting and healthy little ecosystem, full of daphnia and other small organisms. This happens particularly quickly where the trough gets some sunshine. (You may not want to drink this water, but that does not make it "unhealthy" water in any natural sense!) A water trough provides a great source of live food for pond fish. And, providing that there are an appropriate number of fish in the container and that the amount of organic material does not overwhelm the system's ability to use it up (i.e. the fish are not overfed, for example), a balanced system is maintained with filtration or aeration. I didnt know you were so artistic. You have no excuse now to not paint a mural on the fence or garage wall.

Hope you get some rain to fill em up!

BTW, will these overfill? What happens in the brick one if the inner barrel overflows? I bet DH has it all figured out.

Here's my rainbarrel- a plane jane. However it has some features that I like. It's got a couple overflow PVC elbows near the top. It's got a spigot at the bottom and it's raised up about a foot on cinder blocks so I can get a bucket under the spigot. I cannot tell you how much I use that water for a variety of things. I can't imagine being without it.

Tony, yes there is an overflow option on both of them. DH connected a hose towards the top rim. I can lay the hose to where the water is needed most, like my banana stand.

Both to of them are burried a ways into the ground so it is easier for me to reach in with my watering can. The back part of the lid is fixed with the down spout in it and the front part is to open up.

Barb, I hope I will use mine as much as you do yours.

those are really nice and I didnt have any doubt DH had all areas covered. If he didn't I know you would have.

I am SOOO glad to not to have a rain barrel and see these shown. I would feel the pressure to make mine prettier than I am sure mine would be.

Let us know if you see improvements with the plants using rain water vs tap water.

Nice rain barrels! I have three and use them a lot. They are 2 cinder blocks high off the ground.
For the un-artistic: go to a craft store and get some stencils.

where can I get an empty plastic drum? A 15 gal. or two.... I really like how you painted yours. Great job!

mine are 55 Gal. size and I got them at a Feed store. Where to find 15 Gal, I don't know but maybe at the box stores?

Hi
I finally broke down and conected my rain collection system to my aquaium, water garden. Now Ma nature does all my water changes,the overflow waters the marsh garden. I have 1200 gallons of reseve water and lost not one square inch of grow space .lol Next step is to throw in a pump to water the shadehouse utililizing the weak .free fertilizer from the water garden. Hopefully I'll arrive at the "Weakly weekly" ideal for the orchids with no work on my part.
I added a heating system last year to finally contend with those cold spells WITHOUT moving the plants!!! Okay it doesn't work, but it didn't overheat!!!!
I was planning on the entire system working on "normal rainfall" When are we going to start getting that??lol
