Well, y'know, there's a difference in a plant tolerating shade and thriving in shade. Sun lovers will not thrive in shade. They may do fine in part-shade, though (4 hours sun), I have found a lot of plants generally considered full sun do quite well in 4-5 hours of sun. Not shade, though. They may survive (i.e. tolerate) but they won't perform their best. BTW, Knockout is marketed as a part-shade rose, and yes it does indeed seem to do quite well under trees. I have a lot of experience with rugosa roses, and believe me - they don't throw the blooms in shadier locations like they do when the get more sun. Again - they tolerate the shade, but don't thrive. 4+ hours of sun is needed for good growth and flowering of a rugosa in this zone.

I think I see what you are saying - you want a tree to provide shade, but it also gets shaded by your western trees. I doubt partial shade will cause much of an issue. If you want a fast growing tree, try yellow poplar or maybe sycamore (there are some downsides to fast growing trees - you don't want them near structures or your water lines). If shade TRULY is an issue, you could try beech, but they need a lot of water and grow slowly. Perhaps some hard maples would give you what you want as well. For the east side, I don't know if I can help - you might check out local options in your area by driving around or checking out an arboretum. There are lots of ornamentals that MIGHT fit the bill like crepe myrtle, honeysuckle, and as you said dogwood. I am not familiar with sun issues and dogwoods, but maybe an issue so far south. Honeysuckle grows like a weed and will spread - but it is really more of a large shrub.
