And the squirrels, 2 mornings ago I spied a squirrel climbing down our chain link fence heading towards the figs. I ran downstairs in time to see him running along the top of the fence with a huge Lyndhurst white clamped in his jaws. Caught 2 squirrels yesterday, it was especially satisfying when I relocated those bas*tards.

Its in a 5 gal white bucket whose roots have grown out the bottom into the ground

Thanks Keith. I was curious. My first BM from UC-Davis never got much taller than 3 inches (planted in ground). My second one, also in ground, is doing a bit better.

My figs in pots tend to fruit fairly quickly -- right on schedule with those of everyone else. Those in the ground naturally take longer, but mine still seems to take much longer than for other people. The only thing I can figure is that I don't amend the soil or add fertilizer. Guess I should break down and try that next spring.

I rooted 2 out of 3 from UCD last year. This year, they are growing in containers. They are both still alive, but I don't think either one has put on much, if any, growth this year.

I do a lot of fertilizing, especially on the lazy trees. This year I was worrying about all the salt built up in my soils due to Miracle Grow like fertilizers so I went organic. I used

Thanks Jon, what a difference 24 hrs made, over night it started to droop and crack, probably could have used another day but the ants discovered it and I wasnÂt going to let them have it for another day. Though it was the 1st fruit from the tree it was really good. My Mom loved it (half of it).

Well, spoke too soon. Was out in the garden just now, heard a big commotion by the fence, canÂt really see it through the figs tress, thought it was a squirrel munching on the figs but there was the ditch dug under the fence. Time to go hunting for groundhogs.

kkfromnj, so you have a bird problem. I had that problem too a few years back, so I went to a feed and seed store and bought some very light plastic netting and covered the tree all over and down to the ground, about the time for ripening and found if the bird can't get to the fig he can't hurt it. It is very cheap and well worth it, as I got all the figs.

I do have some nets, bird-x, but need many, many more.

Speaking of birds, came across this the other day, wonder if anybody has used them from Bird-x, they also have an ultrasonic $300 - $400 device with 4 separate speakers. I've always been skeptical of these things

I'm sorry it took so long to post these photos of my Black Madeira tree. It just started growing figs, which logically will not ripen by seasons' end however I just wanted to compare the leaves to your B. Madeira. What do you think, they are one and the same?
