At this stage there is probably enough nutrients in the soil mix for the cutting to grow. I've never done a comparison on starting cuttings with slow release fertilizer and one without. The cutting is putting energy into growing roots and then the leaves develop almost separately but it takes time for the two to work together so its not necessarily taking up nutrients from the soil like a mature fig tree does. Slow and steady wins the raise type of deal. You can probably keep cuttings for over a year if you routinely inspect them and keep them damp and change the paper towels or newspaper periodically to prevent mold issues. Some people say that the moss has it's own anti fungal properties.

Thitiponk –Black Madeira is one variety that you have to be very careful about buying, especially on eBay. A prominent nursery was selling what they thought was Black Madeira for a number of years and recently discovered it wasn’t that variety at all. But people bought it, made cuttings, sell plants they believe are BM, and the wrong BM fig continues to be sold. Also, sellers from Madeira Island sell cuttings of black figs which they call "Black Madeira", but are different also. These are all probably good figs, but not BM. Do a little homework on the fig forums before you buy it to make sure you're getting the real deal.

Thanks for taking the time to post your video Tom. Have a BM from UCD since 2008 and displays heavy fmv , root pruned again last season and pruned canopy and displaying short nodal growth with many figs. It grew a sucker 2 seasons back and now in 30g pot produced last season and displaying many figs this season and to date shows no signs of fmv nodal growth is much better on this plant . Will eventually split this plant into 2 plants as it has separate main trunks. Recently set up an airlayer on it also since it is so healthy looking. In many past older readings when i was more into it was mentioned about multiple strains of fmv causing different effects and moves slowly thru out the cells of plant. My belief is one may be able to propagate a more healthy plant perhaps with less of the strains of fmv that would be present in parent plant. Martin
