I know I can post to the rose forum with this question, but I value the opinions of all of you here.

I bought a peace rose (it's supposed to be very disease resistant...NOT.... in my garden anyway).... Anyway, it has black spot, pretty bad blackspot. I've started spraying it with water, a little baking soda and a few drops of murphy oil soap mixed together in a spray bottle. I read about this home remedy in a book called, Trowel and Error. I hate to use chemicals.

But now it seems to be worse, so I don't know if this remedy is helping or not yet. I did a search on the net for an organic treatment and found this http://pharmsolutionsinc.com/Fungus_pharm_Label_RTU.pdf

The ingredients say soybean oil and rosemary.... I was wondering if anyone has tried this, or heard of soybean oil for the prevention of black spot.

I just love this rose, and it's killing me to see it so sickly.

Someone on TV was using milk for fungus. Sorry about your rose. I have not heard of that product.

I don't think Peace is an especially disease-resistant rose. I've tried the Cornell formula (water, baking soda, hort oil) but it couldn't handle the PM/BS pressure we were having this year. I've heard that using Messenger (a protein) helps increase the vigor of the plant, thereby helping it to fight off PM/BS. I use that as well as fungicides to keep my roses healthy.

Yes Kristi! I would strongly recommend it. I will tell you how I found this place. It was about 5 years ago. I wanted a banana tree in the worst way. I was coming back to my house with roomate, and he said look! There's a banana tree! I did a u turn on a busy street and flew into that driveway and walked out with my banana tree! That was it, I was hooked to that place. I ave bought my vanilla orchid there, a navel orange tree that didn't make it due to cold temps when our aparment was being remodeled. I got my first mango tree there, it was a Southern Blush. That tree was over 6 feet and I paid $25.00! I also got my giant gardenia tree there. That was also over 6 feet and about 5 feet wide. Now, I can call them up and request any tree I want. I can't wait for January so I can get my red navel orange tree. Jim (the owner)had a tangerine...huge for $75.00. He offered it to me for $50.00 and it had about 7-8 almost mature fruit! I passed on it. I was very tempted but was'nt going to buy it just to buy it. I only have limited space for maybe 2 more trees. I strongly advise calling. If they sell any kind of tropical fruit, chances are you could get another tropical fruit. Good luck!! Andrew

Check out this website (http://nextgenhome.com/) Townhomes LLC has built the homes for this show 2 years in a row and there is alot of info about the company and the owner at this website. I have seen these homes myself and think they were very nice and they seem to be pretty well built. I have personally built and restored homes for years. I'm getting ready to moved back to Jacksonville, Florida. When I moved there, I'm going to buy a Townhomes built house. I can't build a house this nice for the price. I was very impressed! I have also looked at the Jacobson Manufactured Homes and I really don't see much of a difference. Both seem to be quality homes. The man that owns the Townhomes company was employed by Jacobson Manufactured Homes before he started the company. They have only been in Biz for a short amount of time. (3-4 years) But all I have heard and seen is good. Oh' by the way... No I don't work for the company! LOL I live in Connecticut and was in Florida 4/2008 and was looking at many different homes. This is just my take on the homes I looked at personally.

I've had some issues like that back when I used dryer sheets. They can cause a lot of problems. I have difficulty believing it's leftover bleach in the machine for one simple reason: If it's coming from the bleach dispenser, the water should be diluting it so it shouldn't be spots. If anything it should fairly evenly lighten all the clothes in there assuming it's a high enough concentration to overpower the water dilution. Somehow the bleach, if it's bleach, seems like it would be getting on there not only after the wash cycle but also after the rinse cycle and even after the spin it would seem for it to damage only in spots. I assume the clothes are left alone in the room and you're not there with it. I suspect some mischief or an accidental spill in or on the machine are far more believable cause potentials than a machine malfunction. or if you set the clothes on a counter or top of the machine that may have had a chemical spill where it could pick up the problem. Do you use liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets? There are some very real candidates for problems too. And the machines are there and used at your own risk so naturally the management is not going to reimburse you for the clothes. There's probably a disclaimer in your lease/rental agreement and possibly even a caution sign in the room or on the machines. FWIW, to properly use bleach you need to wait a while and let the detergent do its thing before adding bleach. That's the reason for a bleach dispenser. If you add bleach with the detergent, you kill any enzymes in the detergent and according to many it essentially kills the cleaning power of the detergent too so it's a waste of money to put the detergent in there at all in that case.

well, I'm not a "Rosarian" and I don't have tons of them, but I read in a companion planting book called "Carrots Love Tomatoes" by Louise Riotte that you should plant a bulb of garlic at the base of your roses. The garlic has anti-fungal properties, and black spot is a fungus. I've not had any problems with black spot, since I started doing this. You can also make up a spray that uses garlic and water to help.

Even in Portland, Oregon, Peace suffers from black spot, and the summer climate there is dry and not conducive to black spot. Generally, it's managable there, though, and there are some really gorgeous plantings (it is the only hybrid tea I care much for). After WWII, Peace was planted in parking strips along blocks of streets. I remember them as a kid-- it was stunning. There are still a few of those left, but most of them have vanished.

Here in the humid east (and this has been a very humid summer), pretty as it is, I don't even understand why it is sold. Several nurseries here even sell it, though it is not hardy in zone 4. I have yet to see a surviving bush in our area.

I have three and they do get black spot. I've never used spray but what I do is prune, cut the diseased leaves off, rake EVERYTHING up, add a little mulch and with in a few weeks I have fresh stems, leaves and buds. I water in the mornings and always at the base to help avoid any futher mildew or viruses.

Thank you all. I'll definitely try the garlic - it'll keep evil spirits away at the very least.....hehe. It has been very rainy and humid here lately and I think that is not helping. As soon as it stops raining, I'll be out there cutting back, cleaning up and trying to talk some sense into it! :)
