I could not survive without "Florida Gardening: The Newcomer's Survival Manual" by Monica Moran Brandies

My inspirational books are "Easy Gardens for South Florida" by Pamela Crawfod and Sunset "Florida Top 10 Garden Guide" by Robert Bowden.

There's a month by month book and another book that I often refer to, one or both are by Tom Cubbins, but I can't seem to locate them right now, so I can't give you the title.

Anything in the Phillips and Rix series (published by Random House, I think). You have to learn to think in Celsius temps for the hardiness ranges as I recall, but it's worth it for the information on place of origin and the photos of plants in their native habitat. I've learned as much about proper growing conditions from looking at those photos and their captions, as from several dozen books purporting to tell me just how to grow X (fill in your own 'difficult' plant). ('Course it helps that I'm also a bit of a geography enthusiast. . .) For plants in their garden setting, Pamela Harper's "Color Echoes". The pictures are gorgeous, and she has a fantastic eye for complements and contrasts. She's also close enough to local that most of her combinations work here! For general gardening, "The Why and How of Home Horticulture". It's not a graduate-level text, but gives a really good start on linking the how-to with the science and history behind gardening.

Sunken Gardens downtown St. Petersburg; $8 to get in and absolutely a fantastic day. Loads of nearby restaurants for when you are done viewing the plants. It's a small garden, but old, unique and interesting. http://www.floridasbeach.com/cms/index.php?id=3092 The 4-acre attraction in downtown St. Petersburg is a century-old celebration of serenity, a botanical and biological feast for the senses that features more than 50,000 tropical plants (representing more than 500 species), plus butterflies, flamingos and other exotic birds. Paved pathways make it easy to traverse the Gardens, yet the marvels within make it hard to leave.

I don't know your daughter's age, but I teach four-year-olds and have many nice picture books in the classroom library, some about nature and gardening (I will add your suggestions to my shopping list). I'm on summer vacation now, but these are a few good ones I can recall: My Big Book of Outdoors - nature Anno's Counting Book - nature The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein (I get choked up reading that one) The Empty Pot The Carrot Seed The Little Red Hen The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle -- Janene

Well, I won't list the field guides or technical books either....these are my favorite 'bug' books! Insects Through The Seasons by Waldbauer is a fascinating read. Ants At Work by Gordon Book of Bees by Hubbell Broadsides From the Other Orders by Hubbell (one of my all time favorites!!!) Insects That Feed on Shrubs and Trees by Johnson and Lyon. Its a detailed book, loaded with thousands of good pictures. To be useful as a fieldguide, you have to know the name of the plant you find a pesky critter on. I ditto Chubbles vote for Jean Henri Fabre. I've found two books written by him at book sales conducted by universities libraries or city libraries.

anybody got this book? if you like them in your yard, marvel at their color...get this book. not much information, but a must have if your in awe of their diversity....i bought it for the mrs. a couple of x-mas's ago....

Month-By-Month Gardening in Florida - 1999 - Tom MacCubbin

Lots of useful information. I see there is a revision out for it.

OT but.....Both of the paperback books "Florida Home Grown" and "The Edible Landscape" feature cover photographs of Tom MacCubbin that I took for Waterview Press a long time ago....

The Florida Home Grown cover was shot in Leu Gardens near the big house.....

The Edible Landscape cover was photographed in his own backyard garden near Bear Lake....his wife prepared the veggie basket for the shoot....

tom will be giving a presentation at hd 6323, in orange city on april 21st! one o'clock! be there, it's free! alot of other people in the field will also be there to answer questions.... need i say more......:)
