Amaranthus question

Seeing the lovely pictures posted in another thread reminded me of my question.

In previous years I've grown A. Velvet Curtains and just loved it. This year I started some from old seed. They germinated just fine and seemed normal until I planted them out. Then nothing. They barely grew. They were totally insipid and weak and bugs attacked the leaves.

My question is, could old seed result in weak plants or were the growing conditions this year just not good for them? (We really did have an odd summer.)

If that was my first experience growing them, I sure wouldn't be doing it again. Any ideas of what went wrong?

North53, some of the seed I had sown was a good 5 or 6 years old, it had germinated and grown normally. When had you sown them? ... if started too early, then these will runt out and just sit all summer and do nothing, an unusually cool spring will also hamper them. Amaranthus can be directly sown as soon as the ground is workable, they will often self sow and these are generally the strongest most vigorous plants, next spring all my amaranthus varieties will be sown in the garden ... though, if you want to get a jump start within a shorter growing season, plant them about mid to late April and grow under cool bright and ventilated conditons (ventilation will help with dampening off) Plants can very quickly become spindly ... though, you can always bury the stems down deeper when planting out.

So, give them another try next spring, they really are very easy to grow! Do stay away from the tricolor types, the so called Summer Poinsettia kinds, these I've never had any success with.

I doubt that old seed is the issue. I've found they aren't really particular about part-sun and will just kinda sit there, not really growing much. I always plant mine in full sun but this year I had a few 6-cells left over so I put them here and there in some notfullsun spots and the result wasn't great. The rest of them in full sun were super. Velvet Curtains is a favourite of mine to use in bouquets - just smashing mixed with pretty much any colour, but I really, really love it with pink and a soft yellow.

Hi Jenna, First, thanks! As for your question- I transplanted them about 2 months ago when they were quite small and have been doing great. I get seedings every year from my original amaranthus which I planted 4 seasons ago. I get so many each year- some I leave in that bed, some I transplant and I give away loads! I have never had this phenomenon before. In that same bed with those which are wilting I have very tall and healthy ones as well. I had been watering them mostly around the base till 3 weeks ago when I planted some seeds as well as a new patch of grass nearby and that bed causght some of the sprinkling for that... It has been SOOOOO hot that I have been watering more than usual (keeping the ground moist for the seeds )+ the requirements for the new grass. what is weird is that only 2-3 are wilting so after work I'm going to pull one up and see if it has been the victim of terrestrial turtle bugs which had, btw, gobbled the roots of some periwinkles in that same bed (I will also check for their giveaway holes in the ground) and the others I will prune back somewhat and see what happens. At this point I can also go back to watering around the base for the mostpart. Tell me, do you pinch off the tops of young plants? I have never been able to grow them quite as bushy as that first year- they just grow as tall (meter +) spikey plants.I seem to remember that it broke from the topweight and just went on from there. This is also weird because here, for years, amaranthus were the nightmare of the cottongrowers and considered a weed which was dif to get rid of! will keep you posted and thanks again. dory ps. am attaching a pic of the great-grandma of all my amaranthus! If it's blooming too early it might be the day length. Amaranth is a summer crop and (judging by your post dates) it just might think that fall is coming! Pinching the bloom will redirect it to vegetative growth and increasing daylight should get it growing like a weed. Let me know if I was right, since I'm posting this in late May. You already know what happened! I'm just now putting mine out! It doesn't pay to try to plant this plant until summer comes.

Red amarathus will do fine since they are ready in a short amount of time during summer. With the gourds, if you are using them for food when they are immature, you probably have enough time. If you are intending to harvest the mature ripe ones for things like bird houses, I would suggest ordering your seeds right away and plant them asap. My luffa gourd took FOREVER to get going this year.

Interesting. I have eaten amaranth both the cultivated Asian ones and the wild ones. If they were poisonous I would be dead 100 times over. The "cultivated ones " are the ones you can buy seeds in the seed catalog Asian section. Normally leaves are light green, green with maroon veins or now they have a maroon/purple leafy one. Planted that last summer and very tender when young. The wild one is the one referred to here as a weed aka pigweed (although I do not agree with the description. A weed is a plant out of place, so anything in the right environment can be a weed if it does not belong there at that time).Anyway perfectly healthy to eat. Only draw back is that the wild one has a more earthy taste compared to the cultivated Asian varieties. The leaves also might have small hairs so raw eating does not sound appetizing but sauteed they are pretty good.

Thanks Twrosz & Pudge.
I don't think location was the problem Pudge, as they were in pretty much full sun.
Now that I think about it we did have a late cold spring. I didn't think it was ever going to be warm enough to plant out the annuals. I also had a problem with my coleus which usually are very good performers for me. They were even worse than the amaranthus in that many of them just up and died. Those that lived never did fill out. I must have planted before the soil was warm enough. I should know better.
Anyway, it's good to know the seed wasn't the issue.
