Giant Overgrown Fig Trees, Pruning, Killing?

Hi all,

This March I moved into a place with a garden that has been neglected for ...decades? There are two old fig trees that are gigantic, they've been badly hacked at various times in their lives, and are so high that most of the fruit is inaccessible. One of them has a trunk that is close to two feet wide. They are probably wild seeded trees but the fruit is pretty nice. What would be the best way to approach these? Hack to the ground and choose a few new leaders?

Also, two are growing so close together that I will need to choose one and sacrifice the other. What's the best way to do away with a tree as tenacious as a fig?
